How Transformational Theory Can Be Used To Understand The Personal Experience If Being Bullied In The Workplace, Salma A. Hadeed Dec 2014

How Transformational Theory Can Be Used To Understand The Personal Experience If Being Bullied In The Workplace, Salma A. Hadeed

South Florida Education Research Conference

Bullying is a growing problem in all organizations. This paper will examine how transformational theory can be used to understand victims who are being bullied in the workplace. This research will provide useful information regarding all aspects of bullying and how it relates to this theory.

Elevated Progesterone In Yolk As A Moderator Of Prenatal And Postnatal Auditory Learning In Bobwhite Quail, Joshua A. Herrington Jun 2014

Elevated Progesterone In Yolk As A Moderator Of Prenatal And Postnatal Auditory Learning In Bobwhite Quail, Joshua A. Herrington

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have established that yolk hormones of maternal origin have significant effects on the physiology and behavior of offspring in birds. Herrington (2012) demonstrated that an elevation of progesterone in yolk elevates emotional reactivity in bobwhite quail neonates. Chicks that hatched from progesterone treated eggs displayed increased latency in tonic immobility and did not emerge as quickly from a covered location into an open field compared to control groups. For the present study, three experimental groups were formed: chicks hatched from eggs with artificially elevated progesterone (P), chicks hatched from an oil-vehicle control group (V), and chicks hatched from …

Fiber Pathways For Language In The Developing Brain: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging (Dti) Study, Iris J. Broce Mar 2014

Fiber Pathways For Language In The Developing Brain: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging (Dti) Study, Iris J. Broce

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study characterized two fiber pathways important for language, the superior longitudinal fasciculus/arcuate fasciculus (SLF/AF) and the frontal aslant tract (FAT), and related these tracts to speech, language, and literacy skill in children five to eight years old. We used Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) to characterize the fiber pathways and administered several language assessments. The FAT was identified for the first time in children. Results showed no age-related change in integrity of the FAT, but did show age-related change in the left (but not right) SLF/AF. Moreover, only the integrity of the right FAT was related to phonology but …

When Poverty Becomes Profitable: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Microfinancial Development In Haiti, Yaniv Kleinman Feb 2014

When Poverty Becomes Profitable: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Microfinancial Development In Haiti, Yaniv Kleinman

Class, Race and Corporate Power

For the past thirty years, policymakers have lauded microfinance for its promises to reduce poverty and empower women in developing nations. First conceived by the Bangladeshi economist Muhammed Yunus and the bank he founded, microfinance has been hailed as a visionary project that promises to advance the economic interests of the poor by engaging them directly. Conventional studies by political scientists explore the place of microfinance in the global development architecture of international financial institutions, governments, and NGOs. Economic studies of its effectiveness are contributing to a crisis of legitimacy since they reveal that thousands of clients in developing nations …

Effects Of Increased Levels Of Prenatal Mesotocin On Postnatal Individual Recognition And Stress Responsiveness In Northern Bobwhite Quail (Colinus Virginianus), Brittany Yusko Feb 2014

Effects Of Increased Levels Of Prenatal Mesotocin On Postnatal Individual Recognition And Stress Responsiveness In Northern Bobwhite Quail (Colinus Virginianus), Brittany Yusko

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oxytocin (OT) plays a key role in the mediation of social and stress behaviors across many species; however, the mechanism is still unclear. The present study investigated the influence of prenatal levels of mesotocin (MT; avian homologue of OT) on postnatal social and stress behavior in Northern bobwhite quail. Experiment one determined endogenous levels of MT during prenatal development using an enzyme-linked immunoassay kit. Experiment two examined the influence of increased MT during prenatal development on chicks' individual recognition ability and stress response to a novel environment. Experiment one showed MT levels increased significantly throughout embryonic development. Experiment two showed …
