One Hundred Years Of Servitude : The Colombian Labor Movement 1848-1948, Curtis Curry Dec 1992

One Hundred Years Of Servitude : The Colombian Labor Movement 1848-1948, Curtis Curry

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study seeks not only to place into focus the general patterns of social and economic organization prevalent in Colombia in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth (such political and economic organization has been ably illustrated by several authors), but also strives to elucidate the systems of thought or 'ideologies' to which such socio-economic and political structures gave rise. It is concerned with the thought-systems that influenced the development of the Colombian labor movement, those of actors external to organized labor and indigenous systems of thought of labor activists themselves.

The hypothesis is that class and party-based …

Evidence For The Alternative Pathway Of Complement Activation In The Nurse Shark, Lieneke Cecile Culbreath Nov 1992

Evidence For The Alternative Pathway Of Complement Activation In The Nurse Shark, Lieneke Cecile Culbreath

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Complement is activated via two pathways: classical (CCP) and alternative (ACP). The CCP has been demonstrated in the nurse shark. The ACP has not been demonstrated in any cartilagenous fish. Nurse shark serum was evaluated for complement activity by its ability to lyse heterologous erythrocytes. As CCP activity requires calcium and magnesium, activity of shark serum chelated with EGTA (a selective calcium chelator) or EDTA (a chelator of calcium and magnesium) was assessed. Activity remained in serum chelated with EGTA but not EDTA. Furthermore, activity of chelated serum was enhanced by added magnesium. Activation of shark complement by activators of …

The Development And Validation Of A Preschool Screening Instrument For The Identification Of Language Impaired And Educable Mentally Handicapped Head Start Children, Samuel Corrado

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study developed and validated a preschool screening instrument designed to identify children, enrolled in the Dade County Head Start program, who would be found eligible for placement in a language impaired or educable mentally handicapped program in the Dade County Public Schools (DCPS) system. Previously used commercial screening instruments were demonstrated to have unsatisfactory predictive validity. The new screening instrument was developed by utilizing already existing test items from a developmental skills assessment instrument, the Learning Accomplishment Profile-Diagnostic. These items were selected on the basis of their sensitivity and specificity hit rate scores. The reliability of the new screening …

Where There's Smoke, Elisa Albo Nov 1992

Where There's Smoke, Elisa Albo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a collection of thematically arranged poems that explore one of the significant ways in which we define ourselves as human beings, that is, through our past and present relationships with others, whether those relationships are familial, cultural, social or personal. Through the direct presentation of images, these largely narrative poems seek to refine perception and thus reveal some of the complicated truths inherent in our various relationships with others, all in an effort to find meaning. The form of the poems often reveals a process, a continual redefining of views on human experience in both its life-affirming …

The Influence Of Processing Instructions At Encoding And Retrieval On Face Recognition Accuracy, Garrett L. Berman Nov 1992

The Influence Of Processing Instructions At Encoding And Retrieval On Face Recognition Accuracy, Garrett L. Berman

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Whereas previous research has demonstrated that trait ratings of faces at encoding leads to enhanced recognition accuracy as compared to feature ratings, this set of experiments examines whether ratings given after encoding and just prior to recognition influence face recognition accuracy. In Experiment 1 subjects who made feature ratings just prior to recognition were significantly less accurate than subjects who made no ratings or trait ratings. In Experiment 2 ratings were manipulated at both encoding and retrieval. The retrieval effect was smaller and nonsignificant, but a combined probability analysis showed that it was significant when results from both experiments are …

Investigation Of The Axial Binding Of Phosphrus (Sic) Ligands To Tetraphenylporphinato Iron (Ii), Donghui Cui Jul 1992

Investigation Of The Axial Binding Of Phosphrus (Sic) Ligands To Tetraphenylporphinato Iron (Ii), Donghui Cui

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phosphines and phosphites have been investigated as ligands to tetraphenylporphinato iron(II) (FeTPP) by spectrophotometric titration in tetrahydrofuran. A least squares method for determination of the equilibrium constants K1 and K2 (K1 and K2 correspond to the sequential binding constants for the formation of FeTPPL and FeTPPL2, respectively) was developed. This method eliminates the errors associated with fundamental assumptions intrinsic to the more conventional Hill plot. The visible spectrum of the 5-coordinate complex, FeTPPL, was also determined for each ligand. The equilibrium constants obtained are: {L(logK1, logK 2)}, PMe3 (5.53, 4.60); …

Test-Retest Reliability And Synchronous Status Of Heart Rate Recorded In Vivo In Children With Phobic Disorder, Alexander J. Chapunoff

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study assesses the synchrony and test-retest reliability of the three fear response systems in clinically diagnosed phobic disordered (experimental subjects) and non-phobic children (controls). Subjects (five boys and one girl, aged seven to sixteen, in each group) underwent three in vivo phobic assessments, each including a measure of self-report of fear (subjective), degree and duration of approach (behavioral) and heart rate (physiological), resulting in a total of 36 assessments. Synchrony coefficients for both groups indicated low inter-relationships among the systems. Test-retest coefficients of heart rate indicated moderate-to-very high reliability, with reliability being somewhat higher for phobics. Test-retest coefficients …

Kinematic And Dynamic Analyses Of General Robots By Applying The C-B Notation-Ramip (Robot And Mechanism Integrated Program), Bernardo Donoso

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a new symbolic representation based on 4x4 homogeneous matrices, C-B (Cylindrical Coordinates - Bryant Angles) notation, has been applied to the kinematic and dynamic analyses of general robots, and a computer algorithm named RaMIP (Robot and Mechanism Integrated Program) has been developed on a Sun workstation for the design and analysis of robots and mechanisms. RaMIP can be used to model most industrial robots currently in use. It performs three-dimensional kinematic and dynamic analyses and takes advantage of the computational efficiency of C-B notation. The C-B notation allows the user to model an arbitrary mechanism consisting of …

Civil-Military Relations In Guatemala During The Cerezo Presidency, Laura A. Cole Apr 1992

Civil-Military Relations In Guatemala During The Cerezo Presidency, Laura A. Cole

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1986 Guatemala experienced a transition from authoritarian rule. Many issues affected the democratization process, but I argue that an essential aspect was civil- military relations. Thus, the principal question answered in this thesis is: How have civil-military relations determined the extent and nature of transition towards democracy in Guatemala from 1986-1990?

Adopting Alfred Stepan’s model to examine civil-military relations, the prerogatives and contestation of the Guatemalan military were examined. Prerogatives exist when the military assumes the right to control an issue, while contestation involves open articulated conflict with civilian government. High military prerogatives and low contestation indicate a situation …

Reproductive Ecology Of The Burrowing Owl, Athene Cunicularia Floridana, In Dade And Broward Counties, Florida, Brian Keith Mealey Apr 1992

Reproductive Ecology Of The Burrowing Owl, Athene Cunicularia Floridana, In Dade And Broward Counties, Florida, Brian Keith Mealey

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From 1988 to 1990 a study of the reproductive ecology of the burrowing owl was conducted to determine seasonality and reproductive success in Dade and Broward Counties. Reproductive data for each of the three years (1988- 1990) reveal a higher reproductive success rate (54%) for 1990 than 1989 (40%) and 1988 (40%). Owls using previously used burrows had a higher success in fledging young (63%) than newly excavated burrows (19%). T-tests were conducted on several appendage measurements of male and female owls to determine sexual dimorphic traits. Metatarsus lengths of males and females were different (t=2.36, p=0.02). As of 1990,197 …

Fuzzy Special Logic Functions And Applications, Te-Shun Chou Mar 1992

Fuzzy Special Logic Functions And Applications, Te-Shun Chou

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, four special logic functions (threshold functions, monotone increasing functions, monotone decreasing functions, and unate functions) are extended to more general functions which allows the activities of these special functions to be a "fuzzy" rather than a "1-or-O" process. These special logic functions are called as fuzzy special logic functions and are based on the concepts and techniques developed in fuzzy logic and fuzzy languages. The algorithms of determining C(n), Cmax(n) and generating the most dissimilar fuzzy special logic functions as well as important properties and results are investigated. Examples are given to illustrated these special …
