Hiding Peas In Their Mashed Potatoes: Teaching Faculty Information Literacy On The Sly, Amy E. Kammerman

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Are your faculty picky eaters? Do your faculty members make a face when they hear the phrase “information literacy”? In an effort to get faculty to use information literacy skills and pass this knowledge to their students, sometimes librarians must use stealth and ingenuity. This session will focus on innovative ways that information literacy can be incorporated into already existing programs with faculty and also provide ideas on trying something a little different to get faculty to try even a tiny bite of information literacy.

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

At Grinnell College we believe that students can be the best teachers and that lasting learning also happens outside of the classroom. The Grinnell College Libraries' peer mentoring program is rooted in these beliefs. Our program has two components: advanced research help provided by reference assistants (RAs) at the reference desk; and basic information service provided by all students working at our public service desks. Throughout this presentation, attendees will be challenged to consider if peer information service is appropriate for their libraries and to articulate initial steps to explore and implement such a service.

Utilizing Students Employees As An Alternative Means Of Providing Library Instruction, Stephanie M. Mathson, Joyce Salisbury

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2009

In tough financial times, library administrators want to keep expenditures down while offering outstanding services to and maintaining good public relations with patrons. In order to accommodate requests for tours and library instruction from non-university groups, we have Reference Public Support student assistants provide such services. Our presentation will outline the procedures we use to prepare the student employees to do this work, as well as the skills our students gain through it. We will also discuss the benefits for high school and community college students.

Having veteran student assistants conduct tours and library instruction sessions for non-CMU students extends …

Integrated, Embedded, And Case-Based: Selling Library Instruction To The Business School, Andy Spackman, Leticia Camacho

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

Library instruction can be a hard sell for the business school. The BYU Library has reached out using a variety of approaches: integrating sessions into specific courses, embedding librarians into Blackboard, and organizing a series of clinics inside the business school.

In the mold of Home Depot's clinics these open-door workshops are the opposite of course-integrated instruction. With attendance voluntary we have been forced to experiment with difference schedules, formats, and promotional efforts to fill seats. Prompted by student suggestions we have adopted the case-study approach dominant in many business schools and adapted it to the library instruction context.

Fantasy Sports: The Road To Information Literacy Championships, Paul Waelchli, Sara Holladay

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008

19.4 million fantasy sports players, many college students, rely on information literacy to succeed in fantasy sports leagues, but do not realize it. This session analyzes the connection between fantasy sports and information literacy and how librarians can use fantasy sports to make information literacy meaningful to students. A background on fantasy sports, media and research is provided. One library, University of Dubuque, connected information literacy skills to fantasy football for incoming student athletes. The planning, implementation, and assessment of those instruction sessions are outlined, which included the following steps:

1. Fantasy sports and fantasy football skills were mapped to …
