The Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD) commits its 196 nation partiesto conserve biological diversity, useits components sustainably, and sharefairly and equitably the benefits fromthe utilization of genetic resources. Thelast of these objectives was further codifiedin the Convention’s Nagoya Protocol (NP),which came into effect in 2014. Althoughthese aspirations are laudable, the NP andresulting national ambitions on Access andBenefit Sharing (ABS) of genetic resourceshave generated several national regulatoryregimes fraught with unintended consequences(1). Anticipated benefits from thecommercial use of genetic resources, especiallythose that might flow to local or indigenouscommunities because of regulatedaccess to those resources, have largely beenexaggerated and not yet realized. Instead, national regulations …

We describe collaboration between a health promotion professor and librarian to design a course in the learning management system D2L that does not use a textbook. Instead of a textbook, materials from professional and governmental organizations, supplemented with library materials are used. This approach encourages critical thinking to integrate information from multiple sources. Students also become familiar with information sources they will use after graduation

Using Dystopian Texts To Promote Social Responsibility In The Composition Classroom, Melissa Ames
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Since the Colonial period, educational institutions in the United Stateshave been tasked with developing character as well as academic skill. Whilein earlier epochs such character education would have been explicitly tied tomorality as defined within Christian contexts, today's character educationtakes on a more secular form, focusing on developing skills related to socialresponsibility. By definition, social responsibility is "a personal investmentin the well-being of people and the planet" (Berman 15). Despite the fact thatmany feel that public schools and universities are ideal sites for this type oftraining, research has found that instructors are often reluctant to discusscontroversial issues within their classrooms …

In an alarmist age when tirades about society's eroding ethics areabundant, the media is often a scapegoat for those who fear that cultural valuesare disintegrating. For decades, from reality television's debauchery to celebrityprogramming's narcissism to fictional drama's excessive violence, television hasbeen blamed for contributing to society's so-called moral decline. Recently, concernhas expanded from content to include twenty-first century television viewingpractices. Studies argue that binge watching television leads to antisocial dispositions, depression, and immorality. Likewise, social media is credited forcreating a generation of narcissists and prompting increased levels of depression, jealousy, and apathy. Television viewing today often entails double screening - whereinviewers are …

Anthocyanins in the leaves of carnivorous plants are suggested to play a role inprey capture. In this study, we investigated the role of red leaf coloration (an indicator of anthocyanins)on prey capture using Pinguicula planifolia (Chapman’s Butterwort). Overall, red leaves had less prey (i.e., Collembola) than green leaves, suggesting that red colorationdoes not enhance prey capture for Chapman’s Butterwort. However, the frequent presenceof Collembola on leaves suggests that this plant species could be relying on other cues toattract prey (e.g., olfactory cues).

“Compelled To Row: Blacks On Royal Navy Galleys During The American Revolution”, Charles R. Foy
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Work on Royal Navy galleys in North America during the American Revolution was physically demanding, lacked in sufficient shelter for their crews and rarely resulted in sailors obtaining prize monies. These conditions resulted in desertion rates five times greater than on other Royal Navy vessels and the frequent employment of older men. At the same time, Blacks served British galleys at twice the rate as on other Royal Navy vessels. This was due to the hiring out of slaves onto galleys by Loyalists, the impressment of free black seamen by galley commanders and fugitive slaves seeking freedom through service on …

Librarians In Transition: Scholarly Communication As A Core Competency, Steve Brantley, Todd Bruns, Kirstin Duffin

Modern digital scholarship requires faculty to navigate an increasingly complex research and publication world. Liaison librarians are uniquely suited to assist faculty with scholarly communication needs, yet faculty do not identify the library as a provider of these services. Proactive promotion of scholarly communication services by librarians is needed. In this article, scholarly communication training developed for librarians at a mid-sized public university is described. Two surveys—describing faculty digital scholarship needs and librarian attitudes toward scholarly communication services—are presented. Articulating scholarly communication support as a core competency affirms the importance of this developing role for librarians.

A book review of DYNAMIC RESEARCH SUPPORT FOR ACADEMIC LIBRARIES. Hoffman, Starr, (Ed.) London: Facet Publishing, 2016, xxi+154pp., $63.00, 978-1-78330-049-5. Dynamic Research Support for Academic Libraries is a refreshingly inclusive collection of essays with the ambitious goal of broadening our perspectives as academic public service librarians, so that we may better serve a wide range of research needs. For several years the professional literature in librarianship has been preparing us for a shift away from traditional roles and services. This is right and proper since indeed this shift has taken place in the profession and few (if any) academic institutions …

This poster will highlight techniques for the visualization of scholarly impact data being used at a masters-granting public university for the purpose of outreach to faculty. We have built a scholarly communication support service through liaison librarians who are provided with scholarly communication professional development. A key component of this outreach is the utilization of new metrics that celebrate and highlight academic achievements of department faculty. Presented March 24, 2017, ACRL 2017, Baltimore MD.

In mid-July, 1860, the Athenaeum published a summary of the discussions about Charles Darwin’s theory that took place at the British Association meeting in Oxford. Its account omitted the famous exchange between Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford, and Thomas Huxley, the rising man of science. A fuller report of the meeting was published a week later in a local weekly, the Oxford Chronicle, but this has gone unnoticed by historians. The Oxford Chronicle supplies a new version of Wilberforce’s question to Huxley, with more material about religious objections to human evolution and the proper role of authority in popular scientific …

Gauging the importance of religion to the exercise of political will inthe Sasanian world requires enormous care. It is all too easy to takethe Great Kings at their word as they championed the doctrines ofZoroastrianism in their political pronouncements, especially as someof them also persecuted Christianity. Whether or not such sentimentswere genuine, a closer analysis of the evidence suggests a more pragmaticroyal use of religion. The political realities on the groundwere more often the deciding factor in how the kings related to thereligious sectors of Sasanian society. This state of affairs sometimesset the kings against the Zoroastrian clerics, whose agendas …
