This case study refers to the submission of prior research for the award of PhD by Publication, and compares and contrasts this with best practice in conventional PhDs. Unlike a conventional PhD, which is usually taken at the beginning of a researcher’s career, the PhD by Publication may be taken after a lifetime of research. The regulations governing such awards vary across institutions, but the award is is often granted to very experienced research practitioners who have a track record of significant publication in their area of specialism, indeed they may already be leading authorities in their subject.
