Consumer Product Design And Innovation: Past, Present And Future, Robin Roy
Consumer Product Design And Innovation: Past, Present And Future, Robin Roy
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper summarises some of the content and conclusions of a new book which discusses the innovation, design and evolution of six consumer products – bicycles, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, electric lamps, television and mobile (cell) phones – from their original inventions to the present. It discusses common patterns of innovation, how environmental concerns and legislation have influenced design, and some of the effects these products have had on the environment and society. The paper also uses lessons from the successes and failures of examples of these products to draw out guidelines for designers, engineers, marketers, managers and educators on …
The Introduction Of Design To Policymaking: Policy Lab And The Uk Government, Jocelyn Bailey, Peter Lloyd
The Introduction Of Design To Policymaking: Policy Lab And The Uk Government, Jocelyn Bailey, Peter Lloyd
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The use of design within government institutions is a rapidly accelerating trend of global dimensions. The emergent nature of these design practices, and cultures, raises questions about what exactly is happening in the interactions between design and political institutions, and how that might be understood in broader socio-economic and political terms. This paper reports on a series of interviews with senior level civil servants working in UK central government, all of whom have had some exposure to design methods and techniques through interaction with the UK Policy Lab. The paper sets out the ways in which the epistemology and practices …
Sharing 10 Years Of Experience With Class Aup0479 – Design For Sustainability, Maria Cecília Santos, Tatiana Sakurai, Verena Lima
Sharing 10 Years Of Experience With Class Aup0479 – Design For Sustainability, Maria Cecília Santos, Tatiana Sakurai, Verena Lima
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Unsustainability, be it environmental, social or economic, is a feature of our contemporary society. This complex challenge affects every aspect of the design field, such that moving towards sustainability requires profound changes to current practices and goals. This paper argues that design, in practice, must contend with real emerging issues, and especially in large urban centers. This paper discusses 10 years of experience with the elective university course AUP0479 - Design for Sustainability offered by The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism - FAUUSP, Brazil, which deals with the work of the local COOPAMARE waste pickers cooperative. The class operates with …
Design Of Resilient Consumer Products, Anders Haug
Design Of Resilient Consumer Products, Anders Haug
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Consumer product sustainability is a topic that has been of increasing interest to practice and academia in recent decades. In this context, a widely discussed means of achieving sustainability is to design more durable products, thereby reducing the need for the production of new products. In particular, the emotional perspective on product durability has received attention in recent design literature, since consumer products are often replaced long before they become physically non-functioning. However, the literature does not provide a full account of the causes of product replacement or of the means for making products more durable. This paper addresses these …
A Sociotechnical Framework For The Design Of Collaborative Services: Diagnosis And Conceptualisation, Joon Sang Baek, Sojung Kim, Yoonee Pahk
A Sociotechnical Framework For The Design Of Collaborative Services: Diagnosis And Conceptualisation, Joon Sang Baek, Sojung Kim, Yoonee Pahk
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This study was motivated by the finding that there is a lack of design knowledge in the area of systems design of collaborative services. This study introduces a framework for developing service design strategies to foster collaborative communities and support social innovation. Based on the sociotechnical systems design, the framework allows designers to conceive the strategies, which belong to the domain of technical system, with an understanding of the social system of an organisation. It aims to achieve a seamless interaction between the social and technical systems of a community, leading to increased impact of social innovations. Social network analysis …
