From Grassroots To Global: Unintended Consequences Of A Bolivian Quinoa Economy, Melissa Trinley

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This thesis offers a counterargument to the claims that Bolivian peasant farmers are acting in contradiction with their political support of food sovereignty by participating in a global quinoa economy. This research gives agency to the farmers by reframing the Bolivian quinoa story to show how farmers succeeded in overcoming “development” projects. My research is inspired by two brief periods of time I spent living in Bolivia volunteering with campesinos. This research offers insights into the unintended consequences producers experience when export of a regionally consumed food becomes a major economic development strategy to alleviate poverty. The Politics Of Indigenous Social Struggle In Colombia, Gilberto Villasenor Iii

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The core research question that this thesis asks is: How can we conceptualize the resistance of contemporary indigenous social movements? This thesis argues that Arturo Escobar's ideas about the ways in which social movements can critically engage processes of development best allow us to conceptualize Nasa indigenous social movements of Colombia as resistance to neoliberal globalization. The …

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This thesis determines if Fairtrade cotton can improve the livelihoods of cotton farmers in India. Interviews with Fairtrade cotton farmers and local staff members of a Fairtrade cotton organization provide insightful data on Fairtrade cotton. Results reveal that Fairtrade cotton contributes to the social, socioeconomic, and environmental development of cotton producers but not without limitations. Based on the theoretical framework that agricultural market expansion promotes farmers’ development, this study determines if Fairtrade cotton is a viable strategy for increasing market access for cotton farmers in India.

Fair Trade And Development Goals In The Coffee Sector, Brooke Amy Lautz

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Although fair trade is a step in the right direction, this thesis argues that some of its claims and approaches may be problematic with respect to development goals. As one of the world’s most highly traded commodities and an income source for tens of millions of people worldwide, coffee has become one of the star products championed by fair trade efforts aimed at sustainable development. The discourse surrounding both fair trade and development has been affected by various theories and criticisms, which is considered in the literature review, influencing the overall trajectory of the discussion. This paper looks at some …

Higher Education And Development In The Golbal South: The Case Of Kenya, Erin Ashely Mink Garvey

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Globalization has challenged and changed roles for governments, non-profits, and no-governmental institutions for countries in Global South. it has similarly spawned the births of numerous manifestations of NGOs, which potentially complement the approximately 7,000-9,000 higher education institutions that exist worldwide. Improving education is an oft-cited goal of many countries' development efforts- including Kenya, in her most recent Vision 2030 plan for development- yet many scholars and students alike fall short when they deem only primary or secondary education as the main avenues to realize development goals. This exploratory, qualitative study considers if Kenyan higher ed public or private institutions play …
