Representation Of Lexical Form: Evidence From Studies Of Sublexical Ambiguity, Conor T. Mclennan, Paul A. Luce, Jan Charles Luce Dec 2005

Representation Of Lexical Form: Evidence From Studies Of Sublexical Ambiguity, Conor T. Mclennan, Paul A. Luce, Jan Charles Luce

Psychology Faculty Publications

The authors examined the role of intermediate, sublexical representations in spoken word perception. In particular, they tested whether flaps, which are neutralized allophones of intervocalic /t/s and /d/s, map onto their underlying phonemic counterparts. In 2 shadowing tasks, the authors found that flaps primed their carefully articulated counterparts, and vice versa. Because none of the flapped stimuli were lexically ambiguous (e.g., between rater and raider), these results provide evidence that such priming is sublexically mediated. Therefore, the current study provides further insights into when underlying form-based representations are activated during spoken word processing. In particular, the authors argue that phonological …

Lead Optimization Of 7-Benzyloxy 2-(4′-Pyridylmethyl)Thio Isoflavone Aromatase Inhibitors, Bin Su, John C. Hackett, Edgar S. Diaz-Cruz, Young Woo Kim, Robert W. Brueggemeier Dec 2005

Lead Optimization Of 7-Benzyloxy 2-(4′-Pyridylmethyl)Thio Isoflavone Aromatase Inhibitors, Bin Su, John C. Hackett, Edgar S. Diaz-Cruz, Young Woo Kim, Robert W. Brueggemeier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Aromatase, the enzyme responsible for estrogen biosynthesis, is a particularly attractive target in the treatment of hormone-dependent breast cancer. The synthesis and biological evaluation of a series of 2-(4′-pyridylmethyl)thio, 7-alkyl- or aryl-substituted isoflavones as potential aromatase inhibitors are described. The isoflavone derivatives demonstrate IC50 values from 79 to 553 nM and compete with the endogenous substrate, androstenedione. Data supporting the ability of these analogs to suppress aromatase enzyme activity in the SK-BR-3 breast cancer cell line are also presented.

Diversity And Structure Of Intergenerational Relationships: Elderly Parent–Adult Child Relations In Korea, Keong-Suk Park, Voonchin Phua, James Mcnally, Rongjun Sun

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Korean society has undergone a rapid demographic transition that has challenged traditional patterns of family exchanges. The structure and directions of support flows have become more complex as multiple generations coexist. This article examines the complexity of contemporary Korean intergenerational relationships. The study analyzed two different samples to address anticipated differences in perceptions of and attitudes toward relationships between adult children and elderly parents. The researchers used maximum likelihood latent structure analysis to discover the latent patterns of the association among three main subdimensions of intergenerational relationships: geographic proximity, exchange of support, and cultural norms of family support. …

Effect Of Gender On Lower Extremity Kinematics During Rapid Direction Changes: An Integrated Analysis Of Three Sports Movements, S. G. Mclean, K. B. Walker, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a common sports injury, particularly in females. Gender differences in knee kinematics have been observed for specific movements, but there is limited information on how these findings relate to other joints and other movements. Here we present an integrated analysis of hip, knee and ankle kinematics across three movements linked to non-contact ACL injury. It was hypothesised that there are gender differences in lower extremity kinematics, which are consistent across sports movements. Ten female and ten male NCAA basketball players had three-dimensional hip, knee and ankle kinematics quantified during the stance phase of sidestep, …

Entropic Characterization Of Mixing In Microchannels, Marco Camesasca, Ica Manas Zloczower, Miron Kaufman Nov 2005

Entropic Characterization Of Mixing In Microchannels, Marco Camesasca, Ica Manas Zloczower, Miron Kaufman

Physics Faculty Publications

A methodology for rigorous mixing assessment in microchannels is presented. The analysis is based on numerical simulations of flow in different geometries coupled with mixing assessment using entropic measures. The results show enhanced mixing efficiency for the staggered herringbone micromixer by comparison with a mixer with straight diagonal ridges and a lack of mixing in a non-patterned channel. These results are in agreement with published experimental data.

H-Infinity Estimation For Fuzzy Membership Function Optimization, Daniel J. Simon Nov 2005

H-Infinity Estimation For Fuzzy Membership Function Optimization, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Given a fuzzy logic system, how can we determine the membership functions that will result in the best performance? If we constrain the membership functions to a specific shape (e.g., triangles or trapezoids) then each membership function can be parameterized by a few variables and the membership optimization problem can be reduced to a parameter optimization problem. The parameter optimization problem can then be formulated as a nonlinear filtering problem. In this paper we solve the nonlinear filtering problem using H state estimation theory. However, the membership functions that result from this approach are not (in general) sum normal. …

Translating The Lesbian Writer : Pierre Loüys, Natalie Clifford Barney, And "Girls Of The Future Society", Tama L. Engelking

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

When Pierre Louÿs published his Chansons de Bilitis in 1894, he dedicated the volume of prose poems, which he claimed to have translated from the Greek, to "Young Girls of the Future Society." He portrayed his Bilitis as a contemporary of Sappho's whose life story, described in the three parts of the Chansons, takes her from deflowered shepherdess, to lesbian lover, to courtesan. More than a literary hoax or a collection of erotic poems, his Bilitis songs became the inspiration for a young Sapphic writer who embodied those girls of the future to whom Louÿs had dedicated his work, Natalie …

Dynamic Voltage Scaling Techniques For Power Efficient Video Decoding, Ben Lee, Eriko Nurvitadhi, Reshma Dixit, Chansu Yu, Myungchul Kim Oct 2005

Dynamic Voltage Scaling Techniques For Power Efficient Video Decoding, Ben Lee, Eriko Nurvitadhi, Reshma Dixit, Chansu Yu, Myungchul Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a comparison of power-aware video decoding techniques that utilize dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). These techniques reduce the power consumption of a processor by exploiting high frame variability within a video stream. This is done through scaling of the voltage and frequency of the processor during the video decoding process. However, DVS causes frame deadline misses due to inaccuracies in decoding time predictions and granularity of processor settings used. Four techniques were simulated and compared in terms of power consumption, accuracy, and deadline misses. In addition, this paper proposes the frame-data computation aware (FDCA) technique, which is …

This paper presents the design and implementation of an advanced digital controller for a 1-kW H-bridge dc-dc power converter. A new control algorithm based on the active disturbance rejection concept is developed to cope with the highly nonlinear dynamics of the converter and the disturbances. An experimental digital control system is used to implement the new control strategy. It consists of a digital control board based on the TMS320C6711 digital signal processor chip, an analogy I/O board, and a complex programmable logic device pulsewidth-modulation generation board. Using a newly developed bandwidth-parametrization technique, an autotuning method based on noise quantification is …

Association Between Lower Extremity Posture At Contact And Peak Knee Valgus Moment During Sidestepping: Implications For Acl Injury, Scott G. Mclean, Xuemei M. Huang, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Oct 2005

Association Between Lower Extremity Posture At Contact And Peak Knee Valgus Moment During Sidestepping: Implications For Acl Injury, Scott G. Mclean, Xuemei M. Huang, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background. Knee valgus load during sports movement is viewed as an important predictor of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injury risk, particularly in females. Formulating movement strategies that can reduce valgus loading during these movements therefore appears pertinent to reducing anterior cruciate ligament injury rates. With this in mind, the current study examined the relationship between peak valgus moment and lower extremity postures at impact during a sidestep cutting task.

Methods. Ten male and ten female NCAA athletes had initial contact three-dimensional hip, knee and ankle angles and subsequent knee valgus moment quantified during the execution of (n=10 trials) …

In the title compund, C31H30N2, π–π overlap is absent in the region where carbazole groups of two adjacent molecules are inclined toward each other. The ethyl groups which protrude from the plane of the carbazole groups and the alkylene chain connecting the two carbazole groups are responsible for the poor molecular stacking.

Debye Series Analysis Of Scattering Of A Plane Wave By A Spherical Bragg Grating, James A. Lock Sep 2005

Debye Series Analysis Of Scattering Of A Plane Wave By A Spherical Bragg Grating, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

The Debye series decomposition of the partial-wave scattering amplitudes of a multilayer sphere is derived. The partial-wave transmission and reflection terms appearing in the Debye series are multiple-scattering amplitudes written in terms of four basic quantities and combined together layer by layer in an identical way. The resulting expressions are then used to calculate the scattered intensity of a spherical Bragg grating covering a dielectric core particle and to analyze a number of new structures appearing in the scattered intensity. Telomere Structure And Shortening In Telomerase-Deficient Trypanosoma Brucei, Oliver Dreesen, Bibo Li, George A.M. Cross Sep 2005

Telomere Structure And Shortening In Telomerase-Deficient Trypanosoma Brucei, Oliver Dreesen, Bibo Li, George A.M. Cross

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Telomerase consists of a reverse transcriptase (TERT) and an RNA that contains a template for telomere-repeat extension. Telomerase is required to prevent telomere erosion and its activity or lack thereof is important for tumorigenesis and ageing. Telomerase has been identified in numerous organisms but it has not been studied in kinetoplastid protozoa. Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of African sleeping sickness, evades the host immune response by frequently changing its variant surface glycoprotein (VSG). The single expressed VSG is transcribed from one of ∼20 subtelomeric 'Expression Sites', but the role telomeres might play in regulating VSG transcription and switching is …

Dominant Processes Controlling Water Chemistry Of The Pecos River In American Southwest, Fasong Yuan, Seiichi Miyamoto

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Here we show an analysis of river flow and water chemistry data from eleven gauging stations along the Pecos River in eastern New Mexico and western Texas, with time spanning 1959–2002. Analysis of spatial relationship between the long-term average flow and total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration allows us to illuminate four major processes controlling river chemistry, namely saline water addition, evaporative concentration with salt gain or loss, dilution with salt gain or loss, and salt storage. Of the 10 river reaches studied, six reaches exhibit the process dominated by evaporative concentration or freshwater dilution with little change in salt load. …
