An Examination Of The Relationship Between Published Book Reviews And The Circulation Of Books At An Academic Library, Glenda Thornton Dec 1993

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Published Book Reviews And The Circulation Of Books At An Academic Library, Glenda Thornton

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if book reviews are useful and significant indicators of potential circulation. Major book reviewing sources were studied to determine if some were more useful than others in selecting books which circulate. six hypotheses were developed and tested. A random sample of books published and purchased in 1987 was taken from the circulating book collection of the Auraria Library and used to test these hypotheses. Detailed descriptive statistics allowed comparisons between the findings of this research and that of other researchers.

Adsorption Equilibrium Of Benzene-P-Xylene Vapor Mixture On Silicalite, Jianmin Li, Orhan Talu Dec 1993

Adsorption Equilibrium Of Benzene-P-Xylene Vapor Mixture On Silicalite, Jianmin Li, Orhan Talu

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Adsorption equilibrium of benzene-p-xylene vapor mixture on silicalite is measured at 70^oC with a specially designed cyclic volumetric apparatus at pressure levels of 2.53 and 1.20 kPa. The isobaric isotherms are S-shaped, and selectivity curves at different pressures cross over; the p-xylene selectivity at 2.53 kPa is higher than that at 1.20 kPa over a certain composition range. The heterogeneous ideal adsorption solution (HIAS) model implemented on two patches qualitatively predicts these highly unusual behavior. The observed extraodinary phenomena are attributed to structural heterogeneity, a result of the tight-fit of sorbate molecules in silicalite …

Regional Subcultures Of The United States, Joel A. Lieske Nov 1993

Regional Subcultures Of The United States, Joel A. Lieske

Political Science Faculty Publications

This study develops the case, theory, and statistical methodology for a new measure of American regional subcultures. Using principal component and cluster analysis on some 45 measures of racial origin, ethnic ancestry, religious affiliation, and social structure, I show how the entire population of U.S. counties can be partitioned into 10 distinctive, regional subcultures that are relatively homogeneous and contiguous. Next, I identify the cultural characteristics of each subculture and relate my new classification scheme to the work of Elazar, Gastil, Garreau, and Fischer. Finally, I compare the relative utility of this new measure with Elazar's typology in explaining the …

Genre And The Mark Of Gender: Renée Vivien's 'Sonnet Féminin, Tama L. Engelking Oct 1993

Genre And The Mark Of Gender: Renée Vivien's 'Sonnet Féminin, Tama L. Engelking

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

At the turn of the century, a young aspiring poet named Pauline Tarn (1877-1909) left her native England to live in Paris where she fell in love with a woman, changed her name to Rene Vivien, learned Greek so she could translate Sappho into French, took lessons in French prosody, and began writing lesbian poetry in French using conventional forms, including the most conventional of fixed poetic forms-the sonnet. For those critics investigating the complexities of Vivien's life and work, this curious set of events has led them first to Paris-Lesbos and Vivien's role in reviving Sappho as a powerful …

The Road Not Taken: State Constitutions As An Alternative Source Of Protection For Reproductive Rights, Kevin F. O'Neill Oct 1993

The Road Not Taken: State Constitutions As An Alternative Source Of Protection For Reproductive Rights, Kevin F. O'Neill

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Lawyers seeking constitutional protection for reproductive rights have relied almost exclusively on a liberty/privacy theory under the Federal Constitution. In the wake of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, this theory may be seen as providing a floor of minimum protection-preventing states from banning abortion outright. But it is not strong enough to prevent states from enacting restrictions on the availability of abortion. Thus, the battle over reproductive rights may be seen as shifting from one phase ("Can abortion be banned?") to another ("How far can states go in restricting access to abortion'?"). If proponents of reproductive freedom are …

(In this action, petitioner health care clinics alleged, among other things, that respondents, a coalition of antiabortion groups called the Pro-Life Action Network (PLAN) and others, were members of a nationwide conspiracy to shut down abortion clinics through a pattern of racketeering activity -- including extortion under the Hobbs Act -- in violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) chapter of the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970, 18 U.S.C. §§ 1961-1968.)

Amici contend that the ordinary canons of statutory interpretation support the Seventh Circuit's conclusion below that the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations ("RICO") chapter of …

The 2′-Phosphate Of Nadp Is Critical For Optimum Productive Binding To 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase From Candida Utilis, Anthony J. Berdis, Paul F. Cook Sep 1993

The 2′-Phosphate Of Nadp Is Critical For Optimum Productive Binding To 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase From Candida Utilis, Anthony J. Berdis, Paul F. Cook

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Initial velocity studies obtained with alternative dinucleotide substrates for the 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase reaction suggest that the 2′-phosphate is critical for the optimum productive binding of the dinucleotide substrate. Initial velocity patterns obtained by varying 6-phosphogluconate at different fixed levels of NAD are nearly parallel with apparent competitive substrate inhibition by 6-phosphogluconate at pH 7 and below but intersect to the left of the ordinate at pH 8 and above. Dead-end inhibition studies indicate that the mechanism is random at all pH values. Data are interpreted in terms of a random mechanism with marked antagonism in the binding of NAD and …

Diffraction Of A Gaussian Beam By A Spherical Obstacle, James A. Lock, Edward A. Hovenac

Physics Faculty Publications

The Kirchhoff integral for diffraction in the near-forward direction is derived from the exact solution of the electromagnetic boundary value problem of a focused Gaussian laser beam incident on a spherical particle. The diffracted intensity in the vicinity of the particle is computed and the way in which the features of the diffraction pattern depend on the width of the Gaussian beam is commented on.

Form, Substance, And Section 1041, Deborah A. Geier Jul 1993

Form, Substance, And Section 1041, Deborah A. Geier

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The article reviews recent cases and rulings dealing with the interplay of section 1041 with both (1) the assignment of income doctrine in the deferred compensation context and (2) the substance over form doctrine in the context of redemptions of closely held stock. The author argues that such doctrines, which attempt to avoid improper shifting of income between taxpayers, are inappropriate in the context of section 1041 transfers in light of the history and goals of that section. She believes that final regulations adopted under section 1041 should ensure that the form of transfers or redemptions negotiated by the parties …

Thermally Activated Escape Over Fluctuating Barriers, Ulrich Zürcher, Charles R. Doering Jun 1993

Thermally Activated Escape Over Fluctuating Barriers, Ulrich Zürcher, Charles R. Doering

Physics Faculty Publications

We investigate the thermally activated escape of a Brownian particle over a potential barrier whose height fluctuates with a rate α between the values E+ and E−. We are mainly interested in the low-temperature behavior where E+/T≫E−/T. We calculate the mean exit time as a function of the rate of the barrier fluctuations for the piecewise linear and the piecewise constant barrier, τ=τ(α). For the piecewise constant potential we find three different regimes: τ∼τ+ for α<τ−1+=exp(-E+/T), τ∼2τ− for α>τ−1−=exp(-E−/T), and τ∼α−1 for τ−1+<α<τ−1−. The mean exit time for the piecewise linear potential has a different behavior for fast barrier fluctuations, α>τ−1−; τ(α) is a monotonously increasing function that approaches the asymptotic value τ∼ √τ+τ− for α→∞. We show that …

Tolerance Specification Of Robot Kinematic Parameters Using An Experimental Design Technique, Y.H. Andrew Liou, Paul P. Lin, Richard R. Lindeke, Hsiang-Dih Chiang Jun 1993

Tolerance Specification Of Robot Kinematic Parameters Using An Experimental Design Technique, Y.H. Andrew Liou, Paul P. Lin, Richard R. Lindeke, Hsiang-Dih Chiang

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents the tolerance specification of robot kinematic parameters using the Taguchi method. The concept of employing inner and outer orthogonal arrays to identify the significant parameters and select the optimal tolerance range for each parameter is proposed. The performance measure based on signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) using the Taguchi method is validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, a step-by-step tolerance specification methodology is developed and illustrated with a planar two-link manipulator and a five-degree-of-freedom Rhino robot.

The Application Of Neural Networks To Optimal Robot Trajectory Planning, Daniel J. Simon May 1993

The Application Of Neural Networks To Optimal Robot Trajectory Planning, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Interpolation of minimum jerk robot joint trajectories through an arbitrary number of knots is realized using a hardwired neural network. Minimum jerk joint trajectories are desirable for their similarity to human joint movements and their amenability to accurate tracking. The resultant trajectories are numerical rather than analytic functions of time. This application formulates the interpolation problem as a constrained quadratic minimization problem over a continuous joint angle domain and a discrete time domain. Time is discretized according to the robot controller rate. The neuron outputs define the joint angles (one neuron for each discrete value of time) and the Lagrange …

Suboptimal Robot Joint Interpolation Within User-Specified Knot Tolerances, Daniel J. Simon, Can Isik May 1993

Suboptimal Robot Joint Interpolation Within User-Specified Knot Tolerances, Daniel J. Simon, Can Isik

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Approximation of a desired robot path can be accomplished by interpolating a curve through a sequence of joint-space knots. A smooth interpolated trajectory can be realized by using trigonometric splines. But, sometimes the joint trajectory is not required to exactly pass through the given knots. The knots may rather be centers of tolerances near which the trajectory is required to pass. In this article, we optimize trigonometric splines through a given set of knots subject to user-specified knot tolerances. The contribution of this article is the straightforward way in which intermediate constraints (i.e., knot angles) are incorporated into the parameter …

Organizing Engineering Work - A Comparative-Analysis, Peter F. Meiksins, Chris Smith May 1993

Organizing Engineering Work - A Comparative-Analysis, Peter F. Meiksins, Chris Smith

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the organization of engineering work in six industrial capitalist countries. It identifies four major models for the organization of engineering work; the engineering profession did not succeed in achieving professional “closure” in any of the six countries under review. A review of the historical evolution of the organization of engineering work in each of the six countries reveals that engineering has been shaped by a complex interaction among the profession itself, employers, the state, labor, and preindustrial forces. However, none of the national variations on the four models for organizing engineering labor is stable or without …

Contribution Of High-Order Rainbows To The Scattering Of A Gaussian Laser Beam By A Spherical Particle, James A. Lock Apr 1993

Contribution Of High-Order Rainbows To The Scattering Of A Gaussian Laser Beam By A Spherical Particle, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

I review the theory of the scattering of a Gaussian laser beam by a dielectric spherical particle and give the details for constructing a computer program to implement the theory. Computational results indicate that if the width of the laser beam is much less than the diameter of the particle and if the axis of the beam is incident near the edge of the particle, the fifth-, sixth-, and ninth-order rainbows should be evident in the far-field scattered intensity. I performed an experiment that yielded tentative evidence for the presence of the sixth-order rainbow.

A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Interpolative Net, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief Mar 1993

A Fault-Tolerant Optimal Interpolative Net, Daniel J. Simon, Hossny El-Sherief

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The optimal interpolative (OI) classification network is extended to include fault tolerance and make the network more robust to the loss of a neuron. The OI Net has the characteristic that the training data are fit with no more neurons than necessary. Fault tolerance further reduces the number of neurons generated during the learning procedure while maintaining the generalization capabilities of the network. The learning algorithm for the fault tolerant OI Net is presented in a recursive format, allowing for relatively short training times. A simulated fault tolerant OI Net is tested on a navigation satellite selective problem.

Explicit Asymmetric Bounds For Robust Stability Of Continuous And Discrete-Time-Systems, Zhiqiang Gao, P J. Antsaklis Feb 1993

Explicit Asymmetric Bounds For Robust Stability Of Continuous And Discrete-Time-Systems, Zhiqiang Gao, P J. Antsaklis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The problem of robust stability in linear systems with parametric uncertainties is considered. Explicit stability bounds on uncertain parameters are derived and expressed in terms of linear inequalities for continuous systems and inequalities with quadratic terms for discrete-time systems. Cases where system parameters are nonlinear functions of an uncertainty are also examined
