Analysis Of Whisker-Toughened Ceramic Components -- A Design Engineer's Viewpoint, Stephen F. Duffy Phd, Pe, Jane M. Manderscheid, Joseph L. Palko
Analysis Of Whisker-Toughened Ceramic Components -- A Design Engineer's Viewpoint, Stephen F. Duffy Phd, Pe, Jane M. Manderscheid, Joseph L. Palko
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The use of ceramics components in gas turbines, cutting tools, and heat exchangers has been limited by the relatively low flaw tolerance of monolithic ceramics. The development of whisker-toughened ceramic composites offers the potential for considerable improvement in fracture toughness as well as strength. However, the variability of strength is still too high for the application of deterministic design approaches. This report reviews several phenomenological reliability theories proposed for this material system, and reports on the development of a public domain computer algorithm. This algorithm, when coupled with a general-purpose finite element program, predicts the fast fracture reliability of a …
Noninteractive Macroscopic Reliability Model For Ceramic Matrix Composites With Orthotropic Material Symmetry, Stephen F. Duffy, Jane M. Manderscheid
Noninteractive Macroscopic Reliability Model For Ceramic Matrix Composites With Orthotropic Material Symmetry, Stephen F. Duffy, Jane M. Manderscheid
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
A macroscopic noninteractive reliability model for ceramic matrix composites is presented. The model is multiaxial and applicable to composites that can be characterized as orthotropic. Tensorial invariant theory is used to create an integrity basis with invariants that correspond to physical mechanisms related to fracture. This integrity basis is then used to construct a failure funciton per unit volume (or area) of material. It is assumed that the overall strength of the composite is governed by weakest link theory. This leads to a Weibull type model similar in nature to the principle of independent action (PIA) model for isotropic monolithic …
Observability Of Atmospheric Glories And Supernumerary Rainbows, James A. Lock
Observability Of Atmospheric Glories And Supernumerary Rainbows, James A. Lock
Physics Faculty Publications
The finite spatial coherence width of sunlight at the Earth imposes restrictions on the production of scattering phenomena based on the interference of light waves. With the spatial coherence properties of sunlight taken into account, the visibility of the supernumerary rainbow sequence adjacent to the primary rainbow and the radii of the water droplets that produce the optimum glory intensity were calculated. A substantial reduction was found in the contrast of all the supernumeraries beyond the first few, and the peak observability of the glory occurred for water droplets with radii between 10 and 20 µm.

Professional Ethics Opinion 89-3, Attorney Responsibility To Disabled Or Dysfunctional Client, David F. Forte
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
When an attorney files suit on behalf of a client and later has reason to believe the client is incompetent, what should the attorney do? Can the case be settled? Can the attorney move for the appointment of a guardian ad litem? The article is an excerpt from an ethics opinion which answers these questions.
Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca
Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The authors present the optimal transient stability control problem in a hierarchical structure for multimachine power systems. The two-level structure retains the local closed-loop controls, thereby easing its implementation on existing systems. The formulation accounts for nonlinearities and interconnections, and the optimization of the system transient performance is obtained with less computational effort. Since the computations are distributed among the many local feedback subsystems, the storage and solution times are considerably less than those required by a single overall centralized controller. This advantage becomes much stronger as the system size increases. For illustration purposes, this technique was applied successfully to …

On The Orders Of Magnitude Of Epigenic Dynamics And Monoclonal Antibody Production, Joanne M. Savinell (Belovich), Gyun Min Lee, Bernhard O. Palsson
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The hybridoma cell's maximum capacity for monoclonal antibody (MAb) production is estimated to be 2300–8000 MAb molecules/cell/s, using measured rates of transcription and translation, and the limitations imposed by the size of the polymerase molecule and the ribosome. Nearly all the production rates reported in the literature fall into or below this range of production rates. Data from batch cultures of hybridomas demonstrate a constant specific rate of MAb production until the time integral of the viable cell concentration reaches about 108 cells · h/cm3. At this point, some essential nutrients from the standard media …
Goffman Revisions, Philip Manning
Goffman Revisions, Philip Manning
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Erving Goffman's reputation as a cynic stems from his text, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, which portrays the self as a manipulative confidence trickster. However, matters are more complicated than they first appear. There are two versions of the text, one published in 1956, the other in 1959, and Goffman's revisions to the latter quietly challenge the cynicism of the former. Focussing on these revisions makes the text look rather different. Goffman has two voices in The Presentation of Self and the aim of this paper is to allow each to be heard.
Ritual Talk, Philip Manning
Ritual Talk, Philip Manning
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
The analysis of talk is important for Goffman's examination of the self in face-to-face interaction. Here I suggest that his target is best described as being our ritual talk. Goffman defined ritual in two ways: as the smooth running of everyday encounters and as the honouring of the selves who people them. He suggested that ritual talk is structured by both prevailing rules of social interaction and by the sequential organization of talk. However, on occasion he hinted that this account is too simple. I agree, and suggest ways of furthering his investigations.
An Empirical Test Of Staw And Ross Prescriptions For The Management Of Escalation Of Commitment Behavior In Organizations, Kenneth J. Dunegan, S L. Barton, D Duchon
An Empirical Test Of Staw And Ross Prescriptions For The Management Of Escalation Of Commitment Behavior In Organizations, Kenneth J. Dunegan, S L. Barton, D Duchon
Management And Labor Relations
Tests two major prescriptions of Staw and Ross about the management of escalation behavior in organizations. Since these prescriptions are primarily based on research using students in controlled settings, the efficacy of the prescriptions was tested in the context of a real, functioning organization. The results provide conditional support for separating initial decision responsibility from subsequent responsibility as a means of reducing escalation behavior. However, the findings did not support a reduction of project failure risk as a means of minimizing escalation of commitment to a failing course of action.

An Improved Correction Algorithm For Number Density Measurements Made With The Forward-Scattering Spectrometer Probe, James A. Lock, Edward A. Hovenac
An Improved Correction Algorithm For Number Density Measurements Made With The Forward-Scattering Spectrometer Probe, James A. Lock, Edward A. Hovenac
Physics Faculty Publications
A correction factor to the number density measured by the Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) which compensates for dead time and coincidence errors was determined by calculating the probabilities of and the average number of particles in the six possible types of dead time and coincidence events. These probabilities and averages were calculated by means of a probabilistic model based on Poisson statistics. A Monte Carlo computer simulation of the FSSP operation was also carried out and the number density correction factor was compared with the Monte Carlo data. For an actual number density of 2000/cm3, it was …

A Correction Algorithm For Particle-Size Distribution Measurements Made With The Forward-Scattering Spectrometer Probe, James A. Lock, Edward A. Hovenac
Physics Faculty Publications
Multiparticle coincidence events in the scattering volume of the forward-scattering spectrometer probe (FSSP) cause the instrument to bias the measurement of the particle size distribution of atmospheric aerosols toward large diameters. We employ a probabilistic model based on Poisson statistics to determine the average diameter and rms width of the actual size distribution as functions of the average diameter and rms width of the measured distribution. We compare our predictions to a Monte Carlo simulation of the FSSP operation

An Alternative Approach To The Teaching Of Rotational Dynamics, James A. Lock
An Alternative Approach To The Teaching Of Rotational Dynamics, James A. Lock
Physics Faculty Publications
An alternative approach to the stability of torque-free rotations and to top nutation that emphasizes conservation laws and physical reasoning is examined. It is felt that such an approach, which is largely free of sophisticated mathematics, would be useful in teaching these topics in rotational motion at the introductory physics level.

Equilibrium Polymerization On The Equivalent-Neighbor Lattice, Miron Kaufman
Equilibrium Polymerization On The Equivalent-Neighbor Lattice, Miron Kaufman
Physics Faculty Publications
The equilibrium polymerization problem is solved exactly on the equivalent-neighbor lattice. The Flory-Huggins entropy of mixing is exact for this lattice. We verify the discrete version of the n-vector model when n→0 is equivalent to the equal reactivity polymerization process in the whole parameter space, including the polymerized phase. The polymerization processes for polymers satisfying the Schulz distribution exhibit nonuniversal critical behavior. A close analogy is found between the polymerization problem of index r and the Bose-Einstein ideal gas in d=-2r dimensions, with the critical polymerization corresponding to the Bose-Einstein condensation.

An Analysis Of Two Unusual Reflection Caustics, James A. Lock, Judith R. Woodruff
An Analysis Of Two Unusual Reflection Caustics, James A. Lock, Judith R. Woodruff
Physics Faculty Publications
A reflection caustic consisting of an x or a cross surrounded by a circle was observed using two different reflector geometries. Double-glazed insulating windows that have become bowed, and circularly symmetric cookie trays and cake covers possessing two different curvatures at different distances from the symmetry axis, produce similar caustics when plane waves are incident far off-axis. For the case of the insulating windows, it was found that the concavely bowed outer pane produced the x portion of the caustic and the convexly bowed inner pane produced the circle portion. For the case of the circularly symmetric reflectors, the x …

Non-Debye Enhancements In The Mie Scattering Of Light From A Single Water Droplet, James A. Lock, Judith R. Woodruff
Non-Debye Enhancements In The Mie Scattering Of Light From A Single Water Droplet, James A. Lock, Judith R. Woodruff
Physics Faculty Publications
The glare spots usually seen on a single water droplet which has been illuminated by a plane wave are produced by geometrical rays which correspond to the different terms of the Debye series expansion of the Mie scattered field. Recently other glare spot enhancements have been predicted which correspond to scattering resonances coupling to the orbiting rays associated with high-order geometrical rainbows. We observed the non-Debye enhancement of the eleventh-order rainbow glare spot at an observation angle of 90° on a 3.5-mm water droplet illuminated by polarized He-Ne laser light.
