The Need For A Chainsaw Safety Training Program For Female Forest Landowners, Patrick Hiesl, Janet Steele, Susan T. Guynn May 2024

The Need For A Chainsaw Safety Training Program For Female Forest Landowners, Patrick Hiesl, Janet Steele, Susan T. Guynn

The Journal of Extension

Female forest landowners (FFLO) are increasing in numbers but have been marginalized in technical training programs in the past. We conducted chainsaw safety training programs geared towards FFLO and compared program evaluation results with results from male-dominated chainsaw training workshops. FFLO are limited in their technical knowledge at the beginning of a workshop, are more likely to own different types of chainsaws than male participants, and generally liked having a women-only workshop. The takeaway is that FFLO strive in a women-only environment and that more women-focused extension training programs are needed to provide with a safe and inclusive learning environment.

The Lost Cause Of Unionism: How Greenville Became A Failed Stronghold Of Unionism In Antebellum South Carolina, Candace Rae Boatwright May 2024

The Lost Cause Of Unionism: How Greenville Became A Failed Stronghold Of Unionism In Antebellum South Carolina, Candace Rae Boatwright

All Theses

Greenville County, South Carolina was created in the aftermath of the Revolutionary War. The boundaries that define Greenville follow the natural topography of its mountains and rivers, but also permanently mark its relationship with the historic location of the Cherokee Nation as well as distinguishing it from North Carolina. Through the Regulation Movement and the Revolutionary War, the politics of the backcountry of South Carolina were molded by the men who occupied and laid claim to the land. The primary driver of political decisions was the protection and expansion of personal and community economics.

In this paper I argue that …

Using Improvement Science And A Co-Teaching Model To Increase The Effects Of Evidence-Based Reading Intervention For High School Students Reading Below Grade Level Proficiency, Ashley Vaughn May 2024

Using Improvement Science And A Co-Teaching Model To Increase The Effects Of Evidence-Based Reading Intervention For High School Students Reading Below Grade Level Proficiency, Ashley Vaughn

All Dissertations

I conducted a single instrumental case study to address the problem of practice in which approximately one-third of students entering the ninth grade for the 2019-2020 school year in the study school district were reading below grade level proficiency. I chose an instrumental case study method because it allows for an in-depth examination of a situation within its real-life context. I opted for this approach because I sought to understand the problem of practice deeply and generate recommendations for practical application. By focusing on a single case, I could thoroughly explore the intricacies of the subject matter, providing valuable insights …

Effect Of Transverse Post-Tensioning On Moment Distribution Between Channel Girders, William Eubanks Aug 2023

Effect Of Transverse Post-Tensioning On Moment Distribution Between Channel Girders, William Eubanks

All Theses

This thesis investigates the strength of prestressed concrete channel girders used

in bridges in South Carolina and how to improve their load distribution. The specimens

are 30 feet in length, 33 inches wide and 17 inches deep. South Carolina has 377 bridges

containing prestressed concrete channel girders and many of these bridges received a

poor load rating in a recent load rating project conducted by the South Carolina

Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The research included flexural testing of seven

individual channel girders and load distribution tests of three transversely post-tensioned

channel girders. Individual flexural testing was done to determine the …

The Effect Of Yearly Labor Earnings On Commute Time To Work In South Carolina, Peter Trela May 2023

The Effect Of Yearly Labor Earnings On Commute Time To Work In South Carolina, Peter Trela

All Theses

In this paper, I attempt to ascertain the effect of labor earnings on commute time to work for individuals in South Carolina by using ACS 1-year Public Use Microdata Sample Estimates. First, I use standard linear regression models with controls to determine the direction and magnitude of the association between yearly labor earnings and commute time to work. I later use standard linear regression models with limited controls to determine how the association between yearly labor earnings and commute time changes before and during the events of the COVID-19 pandemic. There exists a positive relationship between yearly labor earnings and …

Drivers Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Behavior, Survival, And Population Growth In The Piedmont Of South Carolina, Michael Muthersbaugh May 2023

Drivers Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Behavior, Survival, And Population Growth In The Piedmont Of South Carolina, Michael Muthersbaugh

All Dissertations

Prey species adjust behaviors in response to various stimuli, responding to both top-down and bottom-up pressures. Large herbivores must attempt to avoid predation either through adjusting behaviors or seeking spatial or temporal refugia, which can scale up to influence individual fitness and ultimately population dynamics. Specifically, predation risk has a great potential to influence ungulate populations by impacting behaviors and survival. Our objective was to quantify ungulate behavioral and population response to a regionally important predator through a case study – white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) responses to coyotes (Canis latrans) on private lands in the Piedmont …

If You Give A Beetle A Maple: Anoplophora Glabripennis Habitat Selection Patterns On An Island In South Carolina, Meredith Bean Dec 2022

If You Give A Beetle A Maple: Anoplophora Glabripennis Habitat Selection Patterns On An Island In South Carolina, Meredith Bean

All Theses

At the epicenter of the Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky) quarantine zone in South Carolina, a small island containing an actively growing subpopulation of A. glabripennis had not completely killed its 37 host trees in 2020. Before these trees were removed and destroyed according to the USDA Eradication Program protocols, I performed an observational study to examine the microhabitat selection tendencies of the invasive A. glabripennis within this satellite infestation. After cataloging >14,000 oviposition sites and >1,600 exit holes created by A. glabripennis, I found dispersal trends according to a host’s stem status (single or multi-stemmed), vertical …

Examining The Perceptions Associated With Sunday Hunting Restrictions In South Carolina, Elizabeth Piller Dec 2022

Examining The Perceptions Associated With Sunday Hunting Restrictions In South Carolina, Elizabeth Piller

All Theses

Public land is an invitation for many to engage with the natural world through a variety of different activities. Sometimes these activities are mutually exclusive and can cause land use conflict, which natural resource managers must navigate. One example of this conflict is restrictions to Sunday hunting. In South Carolina, Sunday hunting is allowed on private late but banned on public Wildlife Management Area (WMA) land. This regulation remains from ‘blue laws,’ laws prohibiting certain activities on Sundays to honor the Christian Sabbath (Balestra, 2008). Blue laws are typically thought of as prohibiting alcohol, but eleven U.S. states currently have …

Spring Gobbling Chronology And Turkey Habitat Use In Upstate South Carolina, Janelle Grehan Aug 2022

Spring Gobbling Chronology And Turkey Habitat Use In Upstate South Carolina, Janelle Grehan

All Theses

Wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a highly popular game species harvested primarily during the reproductive season, which has driven substantial efforts to understand patterns of springtime habitat use and gobbling activity. Autonomous recording units (ARUs) have enabled researchers to collect unprecedented amounts of gobbling data, yet post hoc processing of audio data has been time-intensive due to false detection rates. Gobbling activity has been studied in the South Carolina Coastal Plain, but data for the Upstate are lacking. My objectives were to assess seasonal and weekly gobbling activity and turkey habitat use in Upstate South Carolina relative to …

A Subtle Discrimination: Segregation And The Selective Service Act Of 1917-1918 In Abbeville County, South Carolina, Harris M. Bailey Jr. Aug 2022

A Subtle Discrimination: Segregation And The Selective Service Act Of 1917-1918 In Abbeville County, South Carolina, Harris M. Bailey Jr.

All Theses

The focus of this study examines how the South Carolina Abbeville County Draft Board (ACDB) implemented the provisions of the Selective Service Act of 1917 and its ancillary legislation to register and select men for induction into military service for World War I. The primary question is whether the ACDB, with no clear directions from the United States War Department, interpret and apply the Act’s provisions in a discriminatory manner against African Americans. This study will show that the Abbeville County Draft Board manipulated the provisions of the Selective Service Act to discriminate against both African American and Euro-American registrants. …

Overcoming Provision Challenges And Barriers To Affordable Housing Development In Small Towns Of South Carolina, Marchell L. Magxaka May 2022

Overcoming Provision Challenges And Barriers To Affordable Housing Development In Small Towns Of South Carolina, Marchell L. Magxaka

All Dissertations

Housing serves as a source of identity and provides privacy, a sense of security, and stability to the occupant (Skobba, Osinubi, & Tinsley, 2020). However, there is not enough housing available to support low-income households who struggle to pay rent or are homeless (Luque, 2020). According to Skobba & Tinsley (2016) 43% of the people who do not live in the metro areas of the United States are living in the South and facing unique challenges. In South Carolina, there are about 72,000 subsidized housing units, which is only enough to serve one out of every five low-income households. Many …

Annexation For Good: An Equity Approach For Social And Environmental Justice With Municipal Annexation, Russell H. Stall May 2022

Annexation For Good: An Equity Approach For Social And Environmental Justice With Municipal Annexation, Russell H. Stall

All Theses

Municipal annexation is a powerful tool for improving communities. United States cities historically use municipal annexation to increase tax revenues, grow populations, and increase land areas. However, attitudes about annexation are changing, and there is emerging interest in broadening annexation practices to advance a broader range of social and environmental benefits. For example, annexation can be used to improve blighted areas, control overdevelopment, protect environmentally sensitive areas and open spaces, and improve the lives of residents. It is not clear if cities support using annexation in this way, and if so, when those uses are possible.

Despite restrictive laws and …

A Comparison Of Preferences: Testing The Correlation Between The National Register Of Historic Places And The South Carolina Picture Project, Vito Scocozzo Dec 2021

A Comparison Of Preferences: Testing The Correlation Between The National Register Of Historic Places And The South Carolina Picture Project, Vito Scocozzo

All Theses

Current affairs relating to the architectural stylings of federal buildings have sparked discussions regarding the preferences of the American people for different styles of architecture. Studies have identified a disconnect between the preferences of the general public and professionals who work with the built environment. This thesis seeks to continue these discussions and better understand how they relate to historic preservation by answering the following question: Do the historic resources and buildings nominated to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) by historic preservation professionals directly compare to the historic resources identified by a wider public base as represented by …

All Theses

The goal of this work is to provide researchers, preservationists, and historians with an in-depth look of the treatment of graves and gravesites over time by Bethel United Methodist Church and Old Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston, South Carolina. This data can hopefully be used by researchers in a broader sense to understand the treatment of white and African American burials over time.

Gravestones and sites can reflect how we see people within society in the past, present, and future. Therefore, documentation of social and cultural history along with the documentation of the built environment that contains tangible artifacts …

Habitat Relationships Of Bat Species Of Conservation Concern In Coastal South Carolina, Kyle Edward Shute Aug 2020

Habitat Relationships Of Bat Species Of Conservation Concern In Coastal South Carolina, Kyle Edward Shute

All Theses

Loss of forest habitat used for roosting and nocturnal activity by bats is a conservation concern in the southeastern United States. The northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis), southeastern myotis (Myotis austroriparius), tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus), and northern yellow bat (Lasiurus intermedius) all occur within the Coastal Plain of South Carolina, where their greatest conservation threat is loss of critical roosting and foraging habitats. However, little research has been conducted on these species of conservation concern in this region, leaving gaps in information about habitat associations that would inform conservation and management as forest loss continues due to logging, agriculture, urban …

Analysis Of Hexavalent Chromium In South Carolina Industries, Cole Andrew Roberts May 2020

Analysis Of Hexavalent Chromium In South Carolina Industries, Cole Andrew Roberts

All Theses

Hexavalent chromium is a commonly used industrial anti-corrosive that is carcinogenic and toxic to humans and the environment. Although there have been several studies published over the past two decades on the adverse effects of inhaling and ingesting Cr (VI), it is still readily used and emitted by various industries. This project set out to: 1) identify and analyze a possible pathway to significantly reduce the use and pollution of hexavalent chromium in South Carolina and 2) provide a risk assessment of specific emission sites in the Charleston metropolitan area. The first section of this study examined source reduction of …

Evaluation Of Aerial Surveys To Monitor Fall-Winter Waterbird Populations In South Carolina, Nicholas Mark Masto Aug 2019

Evaluation Of Aerial Surveys To Monitor Fall-Winter Waterbird Populations In South Carolina, Nicholas Mark Masto

All Theses

Aerial surveys are effective and cost-efficient for quantifying population size and habitat use of waterfowl and other waterbirds across vast and especially inaccessible landscapes. Surveys and associated data are critically important to understand population dynamics and to guide habitat management, land acquisition, and conservation decision-making. Due to cessation of the Midwinter Waterfowl Survey in 2016 and need for reliable surveys to monitor wintering waterbird populations in South Carolina, I evaluated fixed-wing, 250-m wide aerial strip-transect surveys during fall–winter 2016–2019. My objectives were to design efficient and affordable aerial survey methodologies to estimate waterbird abundance, distribution, and habitat use in South …

South Carolina, Historic Tax Credits, And Saving Rural Communities, Kendra Wright Waters May 2019

South Carolina, Historic Tax Credits, And Saving Rural Communities, Kendra Wright Waters

All Theses

Historic tax credits have been a vital part of the historic preservation movement in this country since their inception in 1976. Since then, they have evolved to maximize the opportunities for historic building owners, and many states themselves have adopted state historic tax credits that expand the benefits beyond just income-producing properties. South Carolina has been one of the more prolific states in their use of historic tax credits. Even so, historic tax credits have been vastly under-utilized in South Carolina’s rural communities of South Carolina. A comprehensive study of the use of both the federal and state historic tax …

Reducing Uncertainties In Conservation Decision-Making For American Alligators, Abigail Lawson May 2019

Reducing Uncertainties In Conservation Decision-Making For American Alligators, Abigail Lawson

All Dissertations

Effective conservation decision-making necessitates monitoring programs that are designed to collect unbiased and precise measurements of relevant attributes deemed to reduce structural uncertainty of the managed resource state. American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis; hereafter alligator) are a keystone species within the southeastern United States that have cascading effects on ecosystem structure and function, and are managed under consumptive use management programs throughout their range. Management of alligator populations in South Carolina is challenging due to pervasive uncertainties regarding the size class distribution, which is only partially observable using the primary monitoring tool (nightlight surveys), a lack of demographic parameter …

An Investigation Of The Distribution And Behavior Of The Dark Rover Ant, Brachymyrmex Patagonicus Mayr, In South Carolina, David Quinn Bowers

All Theses

The dark rover ant, Brachymyrmex patagonicus Mayr, is a minute (~0.5 mm) dark brown or black formicine ant invasive from Argentina and Paraguay. In the southeastern United States, the dark rover ant is considered a nuisance pest, and is difficult to control. Recently, B. patagonicus has expanded its invasive range, especially in the southeastern United States. In South Carolina, this species has become more common in pest control accounts. Despite this, most of the biology and behavior of the dark rover ant remains unknown. The only official record of B. patagonicus in South Carolina is from 2010 in Horry County. …

A Forgotten Founder: The Life And Legacy Of Christopher Gadsden, Kelcey M. Eldridge Aug 2018

A Forgotten Founder: The Life And Legacy Of Christopher Gadsden, Kelcey M. Eldridge

All Theses

This study examines the life and legacy of Christopher Gadsden. Specifically, it explores Gadsden's understanding of individual and colonial rights, proper channels of protest, and early republicanism. It is through the discussion of these topics that this thesis highlights the importance of studying the individual reaction to the American Revolution and independence. Additionally, this study highlights the fact that many of the terms we use to describe these Revolutionary figures, such as radical or conservative, are not adequate — each individual experienced many changes in their life that led to their support of independence. Furthermore, this study opens the door …

The Economic Impact Of Tif (Tax Increment Financing), Junsoo Ahn May 2018

The Economic Impact Of Tif (Tax Increment Financing), Junsoo Ahn

All Theses

This thesis examines the effect of a tax increment financing (TIF) district on property values. TIF districts and their associated tools for financing capital investment have been a popular place-based development policy for many years, but there is no scientific consensus on their impact. One reason for this is the difficulty of identifying valid counterfactuals (control cases) for parcels within TIF districts given the heterogeneity of parcels in urban areas. The data set used in the research was created by compiling annual parcel boundary and value data from 1995 to 2016 in Berkeley County, South Carolina in GIS and combining …

Catching A Breeze: A Study Of Piazzas In Charleston, Sc, Alena Coral Franco May 2017

Catching A Breeze: A Study Of Piazzas In Charleston, Sc, Alena Coral Franco

All Theses

Recent academic discussions have prompted a reexamination of Charleston, South Carolina's historic architecture. While Charleston is lauded for its impressive inventory of intact historic buildings, little is known about the development and variation within its urban house types, including iconic single house form. Piazzas, traditionally places of sheltered repose, are building elements historically associated with Charleston's single house. Integral to the urban fabric, piazzas have long served as iconic symbols of the city. This thesis presents the results of the first comprehensive survey analysis of Charleston's piazzas, identifying more than 2,000 of them in the neighborhoods south of the Septima …

Spring dead spot (SDS) disease is an important root disease of bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) in transition zone habitats around the world. Causal agents have been identified in the U.S. as Ophiosphaerella korrae (OK), O. herpotricha (OH), and O. narmari, but they have not been identified in Argentina (ARG).

Tucked Away: An Analysis Of Charleston's Courts And Alleys & The Search For Graceful Density, Haley Marie Schriber May 2016

Tucked Away: An Analysis Of Charleston's Courts And Alleys & The Search For Graceful Density, Haley Marie Schriber

All Theses

The gritty, authentic quality of the alleys, lanes, and work yards that channeled the day-to-day routines of Charleston's working class and poor fascinated and inspired writers, poets, and artists during the decades that followed World War I. Charleston's alleys, particularly those South of Broad, were often the subject of romantic celebration. A far more common secondary urban street form, the court, has, in contrast, received neither popular or scholarly attention. The courts of Charleston are short, narrow pedestrian streets that pierce the center of residential blocks, historically lined with small houses and tenements that housed the city's labor force, recent …
