Phasor Measurement Unit Deployment Approach For Maximum Observability Considering Vulnerability Analysis, Jyoti Paudel
Phasor Measurement Unit Deployment Approach For Maximum Observability Considering Vulnerability Analysis, Jyoti Paudel
All Theses
In recent years, there has been growing interest of synchrophasor measurements like Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) Power systems are now being gradually populated by PMU since they provide significant phasor information for the protection and control of power systems during normal and abnormal situations. There are several applications of PMUs, out of which state estimation is a widely used. To improve the robustness of state estimation, different approaches for placement of PMUs have been studied. This thesis introduces an approach for deployment the PMUs considering its vulnerability. Two different analysis have been considered to solve the problem of locating PMUs …
Power Quality Study Of A Microgrid With Nonlinear Composite Load And Pv Integration, Zhanhe Liu
Power Quality Study Of A Microgrid With Nonlinear Composite Load And Pv Integration, Zhanhe Liu
All Theses
Harmonics distortion is a crucial problem in microgrid. Harmonic sources can be categorized as two main factors: renewable energy integration and nonlinear loads. Both factors are investigated in this thesis. For renewbale energy, photovoltaic (PV) power is one of the most effective solutions for energy crisis and it is showing great potential for serving customers in microgrid. A three phase PV source model is established from both mathematical equations and power electronic control schemes. A composite load model by Crossed Frequency Admittance Matrix theory is illustrated and built as well. Due to the fact that microgrid should be able to …
The Gaussian Approximation To Multiple-Access Interference In The Evaluation Of The Performance Of A Communication System With Convolutional Coding And Viterbi Decoding, Snigdhaswin Kar
All Theses
The standard Gaussian approximation is extended to the performance analysis of direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems using binary con-volutional coding, quaternary modulation with quaternary direct-sequence spreading and Viterbi decoding. Using the standard Gaussian approximation, the random variables mod-eling the multiple-access interference in the receiver statistics are replaced by an equivalent additive Gaussian noise term with the same variance as the actual multiple-access interfer-ence term. The Gaussian approximation is shown to result in an accurate approximation to the probability of code-word error at the receiver. The accuracy is demonstrated by compar-ing simulation results for the actual multiple-access system and a model …
Decellularized Bovine Nucleus Pulposus As A Biomimetic Scaffold For Intervertebral Disc Regeneration, Christopher Fernandez
Decellularized Bovine Nucleus Pulposus As A Biomimetic Scaffold For Intervertebral Disc Regeneration, Christopher Fernandez
All Theses
Low back pain (LBP) is a significant burden with a lifetime prevalence of 84% and estimated expenditures of $85.9 billion.[1,2] Although LBP is multifactorial; it has been shown that LBP can originate from degenerating intervertebral discs (IVDs); a process which initiates in the nucleus pulposus (NP); a hydrated tissue primarily composed of type 2 collagen and proteoglycan. Current therapies for IVD degeneration (IDD) are palliative and merely delay surgical management. While these procedures may relieve pain temporarily, they fail to address the underlying cause of degeneration and make no attempt to regenerate the effected tissue. Additional concerns with the use …
Improving The Implementation Of Pavement Preservation Strategies In South Carolina, Franklin Reed
Improving The Implementation Of Pavement Preservation Strategies In South Carolina, Franklin Reed
All Theses
With compounding budget constraints on infrastructure, cost effective solutions to maintain roadways are becoming increasingly important. Pavement preservation provides a cost effective option to keep the roadway network at an acceptable level. However, pavement preservation is a relatively new concept that many states have not fully implemented successfully. This research supports efforts to improve the pavement preservation practices in the state of South Carolina. It analyzes the current pavement preservation practices in South Carolina as well as other states to identify where improvements could be made. The research also outlines a treatment tracking program for the state of South Carolina …
An Analysis Of Major League Soccer: Competitive Balance And Wage Dispersion, William Hobbs Iii
An Analysis Of Major League Soccer: Competitive Balance And Wage Dispersion, William Hobbs Iii
All Theses
Major League Soccer is in a transitional state which may see it projected into the realm of international relevancy, competing with European soccer. This transition is fueled by contracting renowned superstars from Europe via the designated player (DP) rule. This study examines implications of the DP rule on competitive balance (CB) of the league and wage dispersion among teams. The effect of the rule on CB is inconclusive in the model constructed, but propositions of a more appropriate CB measure are presented for future research. The DP rule has caused higher levels of salary dispersion within the league and this …
Feasibility Study Of Porous Media Compressed Air Energy Storage In South Carolina, United States Of America, Alexandra-Selene Jarvis
Feasibility Study Of Porous Media Compressed Air Energy Storage In South Carolina, United States Of America, Alexandra-Selene Jarvis
All Theses
Renewable Energy Systems (RES) such as solar and wind, are expected to play a progressively significant role in electricity production as the world begins to move away from an almost total reliance on nonrenewable sources of power. In the US there is increasing investment in RES as the Department of Energy (DOE) expands its wind power network to encompass the use of offshore wind resources in places such as the South Carolina (SC) Atlantic Coastal Plain. Because of their unstable nature, RES cannot be used as reliable grid-scale power sources unless power is somehow stored during excess production and recovered …
An Examination Of Psychological Climate Linking Mechanisms Across The Strategic Priorities Of Health And Stress, Alec Munc
All Dissertations
Given that employee health and well-being represent a significant source of financial costs for organizations, this dissertation seeks to address some of the pathways through which organizational efforts to improve physical and mental health may operate. This study drew from a model of safety climate (Neal & Griffin, 2000) to propose that psychological climate exerts in influence on employee health and well-being through the joint moderators of knowledge/motivation and behaviors. The model also extended beyond the typical climate linking mechanisms to include moderators both individual (behavioral activation & behavioral inhibition systems) and contextual (workplace physical exposure). Using a two-wave prospective …
Estimating The Effect Of Extended And Emergency Unemployment Benefits On The Long-Term Unemployed, James Jones
Estimating The Effect Of Extended And Emergency Unemployment Benefits On The Long-Term Unemployed, James Jones
All Dissertations
Unemployment insurance is designed to help workers smooth consumption in the event of a negative employment shock. These benefits are traditionally funded and administrated by the individual states and territories of the United States. The depth and severity of the “Great Recession†that started in December of 2007 and ended in June of 2009 was such that, Congress was compelled on multiple occasions to extend those benefits. Legislation during this period extended the duration of unemployment benefits to the longest period in history, as unemployed individuals in many states could receive up to 99 weeks of unemployment compensation. The policy …

Understanding The Automotive Pedal Usage And Foot Movement Characteristics Of Older Drivers, Yubin Xi
Understanding The Automotive Pedal Usage And Foot Movement Characteristics Of Older Drivers, Yubin Xi
All Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand the pedal usage characteristics of older drivers in various driving tasks using an instrumented vehicle. This study stemmed from the prevalence of the pedal application errors (PAEs) and the older drivers’overrepresentation in crashes caused by PAEs.
With the population increasing and becoming older, it is estimated that in 2020 there will be 40 million drivers over the age of 65 in the United States. Compared with their younger counterparts, older drivers are facing declining cognitive and physical abilities, such as impaired vision, slower reaction time and diminishing range of limb motion. Because …
Interacting Partners Of The Sunn Symbiotic Kinase, Ashley Dawn Zearfoss Crook
Interacting Partners Of The Sunn Symbiotic Kinase, Ashley Dawn Zearfoss Crook
All Dissertations
The control of nodule number in legumes is primarily accomplished through a complex systemic signaling pathway termed autoregulation of nodulation (AON). The protein kinase SUNN, a leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase, exhibits shoot control of AON. I show subcellular localization of SUNN to the plasma membrane and specifically to the plasmodesmata, a prime location for systemic signaling. To aid in better understanding the mechanisms of signaling in AON, I used different approaches to identify potential protein-protein interactions involving SUNN, including candidate genes, exploratory proteomics, and forward genetic screens. Candidate interactors, including CLAVATA2 (CLV2), CORYNE (CRN) and guanine exchange factors of the …

Anisotropic Stimuli-Responsive Polymeric Nanoparticles: Synthesis And Characterization, Chunliang Lu
All Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the design, synthesis and characterization of stimuli-responsive anisotropic nanoparticles with various morphologies. Size- and shape-tunable Janus nanoparticles consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate) (p(MMA/nBA)), poly(pentafluorostyrene/nBA) (p(PFS/nBA) and poly(2-(N,N′-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate/nBA) (p(DMAEMA/nBA)) phases were synthesized via consecutive seeded emulsion polymerization. These Janus nanoparticles are capable of changing size and morphology in response of temperature and/or pH changes, which may have potential applications as solid surfactants. Gibbous and inverse-gibbous nanoparticles were synthesized viacopolymerization of fluorinated monomers in the presence of pMMA or polystyrene (pSt) seed particles. The morphology of the gibbous nanoparticles can be controlled by polymerization conditions. Incorporation …
Filtering Impulses In Dynamic Noise In The Presence Of Large Measurement Noise, Jungphil Kwon
Filtering Impulses In Dynamic Noise In The Presence Of Large Measurement Noise, Jungphil Kwon
All Dissertations
This work considers the problem of filtering a system in which the dynamic noise occasionally has an impulse value that is an order of magnitude or more larger than its typical expected distribu-tion. This is particularly challenging when the ratio of measurement noise to typical dynamic noise is large enough that the impulse dynamic noise cannot be easily distinguished from a large random occurrence of measurement noise. A new filter model is proposed using a multiple model approach in which one of the models is an impulse. The implementation of the model is demonstrated in a Kalman filter framework. Simulation …
