This study examines the life and legacy of Christopher Gadsden. Specifically, it explores Gadsden's understanding of individual and colonial rights, proper channels of protest, and early republicanism. It is through the discussion of these topics that this thesis highlights the importance of studying the individual reaction to the American Revolution and independence. Additionally, this study highlights the fact that many of the terms we use to describe these Revolutionary figures, such as radical or conservative, are not adequate — each individual experienced many changes in their life that led to their support of independence. Many gaps exist in the research on refugee students in general, with the overall portrayal in the literature presenting a school experience in which refugees struggle academically, socially, and emotionally (Roxas, 2008; McBrien, 2005; Lerner, 2012; Lustig, 2004; Smith & Halbert, 2013). Current research discusses social and linguistic struggles frequently, and highlights the need for schools to acknowledge refugees’ backgrounds and draw on their linguistic repertoires to aid their acquisition of the English language (Cummins, 2005; Cummins, et al., 2006; Gutierrez, Baquedano-Lopez, & Tejeda, 1999; Gutierrez, Baquedano-Lopez, Alvarez, & Chiu, 1999). The involvement of United States military forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas has led to the death of nearly 7,000 service members (Defense Causality Analysis System, 2017). Although there are a number of recreation-based programs that serve military families, little research has been conducted on such programs. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of military families participating in a three-day recreation-based program, the Families of Fallen Soldiers camp, serving bereaved military families.
