The Long-Term Consequences Of Child Abuse And Neglect In Men, Robert A. Beattey Jr.
The Long-Term Consequences Of Child Abuse And Neglect In Men, Robert A. Beattey Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Research indicates that the annual incidence of child maltreatment is around 10% and that more than one-quarter of children have, at least indirectly, experienced some form of violence. Prospective studies find that in high-income countries, like the United States, there are moderate correlations between childhood maltreatment and low educational achievement, low skilled employment, depression, suicide attempts, and alcohol problems, as well as strong correlations with obesity, behavior problems in childhood and adolescence, and criminal behavior. Despite the high costs of child abuse and neglect—both direct and indirect—and decades of research and public health, justice, and social service investment in prevention …
African American Male Veterans’ Illness Representation And Reported Self-Management Practices Of High Blood Pressure, Tammie Brodie
African American Male Veterans’ Illness Representation And Reported Self-Management Practices Of High Blood Pressure, Tammie Brodie
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
High blood pressure (HBP) is a common condition in the United States, affecting one in four American adults. Forty-one percent of African Americans have HBP compared to 27% of White Americans. African Americans develop high blood pressure at an earlier age and suffer more complications compared to other ethnic groups. Numerous studies have been conducted to find the causes and treatment for HBP in African Americans.
The purpose of this research is to explore self-management practices of African-American male veterans, who have positive HBP representation and controlled HBP. A mixed-methods approach guided the study to gain quantitative and qualitative explanatory …
Taurine's Effect On Cocaine Reward And Neurogenesis In The Adolescent Male Rat Brain., Avery E. Villa-Gonzalez
Taurine's Effect On Cocaine Reward And Neurogenesis In The Adolescent Male Rat Brain., Avery E. Villa-Gonzalez
Dissertations and Theses
Adolescence is a developmentally critical transition from childhood to adulthood including both maturation of the body and the brain. Neuroplastic changes result in dynamic organization of the brain during adolescence, leaving them vulnerable to development of mental illness and drug-seeking behavior. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the psychostimulant cocaine is the second most popular illicit drug in the world. Cocaine, amongst having many detrimental effects, has shown to also decrease hippocampal neurogenesis, resulting in decreased neuroplasticity and cognitive dysfunction. Previous students in our laboratory have shown that treatment of adult male rats with the essential …
