“How I Made an $880 Jacket for $37”
Author: Hayley Lind, B.S. Fashion Industry Management, Philadelphia University, M.A. CUNY Graduate School of Journalism
Abstract:
Fashion counterfeiting takes away more than 750 million jobs and more than $1 billion from the U.S. economy each year. Knock-offs can be found anywhere from Canal Street in New York City to the shelves of fast-fashion retailers like Forever 21. Trademark and counterfeiting laws, which seek to prevent and seize copied products, have complications and loopholes that allow fakes to continue to be produced. If you recreate a designer item yourself, it is both legal …
Closing The Teacher Diversity Gap, Emily Holzknecht
Closing The Teacher Diversity Gap, Emily Holzknecht
Capstones
In New York City, 43 percent of boys in the public school system may never have a teacher who looks like them. Recruitment initiatives have brought more men of color into the classroom, but challenging work environments are driving these much-needed teachers to find more profitable work in a less stressful environment.
Nationally, minority and non-minority teachers are leaving the profession at an increasing rate. In New York, men of color represent about 8 percent of the teachers, while boys of color make up almost half of the student population. Taking aim at this disparity, the de Blasio administration plans …
Wildlife Finds Its Way Back To Polluted Newtown Creek, Suzanna Masih
Wildlife Finds Its Way Back To Polluted Newtown Creek, Suzanna Masih
Capstones
The Newtown Creek in New York is one of the most polluted water bodies in the United States. Scores of chemical factories and industries lined its banks in the 1800s up until the 1950s. Toxic contaminants from these sites and sewage discharges from the city left the creek a barren wasteland. But now, decades of water conservation efforts in New York City have begun to revive the health of the waterway and are making it habitable for wildlife again. Yet, the fight for even cleaner waters continues.
No Place Like Home: Tenant Harassment And The Frailty Of Housing Court, Adam M. Shrier
No Place Like Home: Tenant Harassment And The Frailty Of Housing Court, Adam M. Shrier
Capstones
Residents across New York City—particularly those living in rent-stabilized or rent-controlled apartments—are subject to concerted, persistent harassment at the hands of landlords determined to replace them with higher-rent paying tenants or tenants who will remain compliant in response to the landlords’ negligence or illegal actions. Although tenant harassment is illegal in New York City, the laws and penalties of New York City Housing Court have proven to be an ineffective system for tenants and insufficient deterrent against landlords who stand to make significant financial gains from deregulating apartments and who often get slapped with little to no fines for their …
New York City’S Affordable Housing Lottery: Inconsistent Screening Methods And Lack Of Government Oversight, Donna M. Airoldi
New York City’S Affordable Housing Lottery: Inconsistent Screening Methods And Lack Of Government Oversight, Donna M. Airoldi
Capstones
New York City offers substantial tax credits and subsidies to developers to entice them to include affordable housing units in their projects. The city oversees the random assigning of numbers for the affordable housing lottery through its online system, Housing Connect, but it cedes oversight of the process to developers and third-party managers — known as marketing agents — who use inconsistent and unclear screening measures when selecting applicants for buildings, sometimes rejecting those who actually qualify for these high-demand apartments. This article shows through examples of individual applicants how confusing the rules can be.

Teachers also believed that teachers are capable and should be allowed to spearhead the school initiatives intended to develop character. According …
An Alliance Of Ladies: Power, Public Affairs, And Class Construction In Early National New York City, Alisa J. Wade
An Alliance Of Ladies: Power, Public Affairs, And Class Construction In Early National New York City, Alisa J. Wade
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The dissertation studies elite women’s political consciousness in New York City between 1783 and 1815, contextualizing women’s position within the city’s social strata and the rise of market capitalism in the post-Revolutionary era. In a period of deferential politics, women within the leadership class played a unique role in remodeling the structure of republican government and determining who belonged within it. Building on the foundation of learned femininity, they constructed the etiquette that undergirded men’s political careers and oversaw the marriage market. They mediated divisions between new merchant capital and more established landed wealth, reinforcing dynastic stability. Moreover, they were …
Classics And Rockefeller Center: John D. Rockefeller Jr. And The Use Of Classicism In Public Space, Jared A. Simard
Classics And Rockefeller Center: John D. Rockefeller Jr. And The Use Of Classicism In Public Space, Jared A. Simard
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation situates the mythologically-inspired artwork of Rockefeller Center in the classical education of its sole proprietor, John D. Rockefeller Jr. I argue that his extensive classical education at the Browning School and Brown University led to an adult interest in the Classics. Through extensive, original archival research at the Rockefeller Archive Center and the Rockefeller Center Archive Center, I demonstrate that this interest was expressed through his philanthropy of prestigious institutions such as the American Academy in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and the excavations of the Athenian Agora. Colonial Williamsburg and Versailles are also …

Beaches, People, And Change: A Political Ecology Of Rockaway Beach After Hurricane Sandy, Bryce B. Dubois
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation uses restoration practices of Rockaway beach post-Hurricane Sandy as a lens to investigate tensions between nature and society on urban coasts. By focusing on this New York City beach, this dissertation aims to examine the interaction between the beach, residents, city and federal agencies, and local environmental grassroots stewards in their response to coastal flooding and erosion. This is an ethnographic case study of Rockaway Beach during the two years (October 2012-October 2014) following Hurricane Sandy. This case study is based on secondary data analysis of interviews with 52 key informants, field-notes from participant observation at community and …
Die Meistersinger, New York City, And The Metropolitan Opera: The Intersection Of Art And Politics During Two World Wars, Gwen L. D'Amico
Die Meistersinger, New York City, And The Metropolitan Opera: The Intersection Of Art And Politics During Two World Wars, Gwen L. D'Amico
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1945, after a five-year hiatus, the Metropolitan Opera returned Richard Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg to its stage. It had been the only one of Wagner’s operas that had been banned during World War II, ostensibly because of its German nationalism and association with the Third Reich. But was it the German nationalism or Wagner’s own anti-Semitism that caused the unease? What resounded with the audiences? World War II stands at an historic cross roads in the reception of Die Meistersinger in America. This is where the present day “problem” with this work begins. The Metropolitan Opera’s decision created …
