Listen To Liston: Examining The Systemic Erasure Of Black Women In The Historiography Of Jazz, Victoria E. Smith Jan 2020

Listen To Liston: Examining The Systemic Erasure Of Black Women In The Historiography Of Jazz, Victoria E. Smith

Theses

"First you are a jazz musician, then you are black, then you are a female. I mean it goes down the line like that. We're like the bottom of the heap." - Melba Liston (pg 2) The historiography of jazz has consciously and unconsciously excluded women. This exclusion is exacerbated when one examines the intersection of race and jazz for black women. This essay argues that due to overwhelming societal expectations, gendered language, and physical threats of sexual assault and violence, black women had to create alternatives spheres of affirmation and musical expression because jazz culture stymied their access to …

Sinorhizobium Meliloti Changes Motility Phenotypes In The Presence Of Serum, Eris K. Bisal Jan 2020

Sinorhizobium Meliloti Changes Motility Phenotypes In The Presence Of Serum, Eris K. Bisal

Theses

Sinorhizobium meliloti is a nitrogen-fixing flagellated soil bacterium that engages in a mutual symbiotic relationship with the legume Medicago sativa. Using its flagella, S. meliloti is chemotactic in response to varying environmental cues thereby directed to a target, which is typically the root hairs of M. sativa. Lu et al, 2012 suggested that a signal from the plant can switch S. meliloti from a free-living flagellated microbe to a host-invading non-flagellated microbe, although this signal has not been identified. This switch is thought to occur inside curled root hairs of the plant, and after becoming non-flagellated, S. …

Carousel: Performance And Ritual Of A Child's Play, Erik Maniscalco Jan 2020

Carousel: Performance And Ritual Of A Child's Play, Erik Maniscalco

Theses

Carousel is a series of oil paintings inspired by my seven year old

daughter, as well as my work towards becoming a childhood educator. My

aim with this project is to explore the performative and ritualistic nature of

children’s play: focusing on the creative ways children stretch and reshape

their reality through imagined play narratives. Upon the carousel’s stage,

children select a character and take part in a performed ritual. I’ve long felt

connected to the visual vocabulary found within baroque and renaissance

styles, and I am fascinated by the mixture of amusement, tradition,

religion, and distortion imbued within the …

Surprises! Time-Tested & Easy-To-Follow Tips To Take The Mystery Out Of Success For Middle And High School Readers, Morose Leonard Jan 2020

Surprises! Time-Tested & Easy-To-Follow Tips To Take The Mystery Out Of Success For Middle And High School Readers, Morose Leonard

Theses

Surprises! encapsulates my education at Lehman College. During my three years of studies, I have developed a greater appreciation for science (both natural and social), and I understand science's fundamental philosophy, which at its core denotes humanity’s effort to demystify the workings of the universe, of which we are a part. If we allow it, science can dispel our misconceptions and prejudices about ourselves and our place in the universe.

Through Surprises!, I have sought to apply that understanding to help promote our human aspirations without disrupting the delicate balance of life as we know it. For better or …

Bioenergetic Modulation Of Retinal Progenitor Cell Glycolysis To Drive Invasion For Photoreceptor Replacement, Jei Espinal Jan 2020

Bioenergetic Modulation Of Retinal Progenitor Cell Glycolysis To Drive Invasion For Photoreceptor Replacement, Jei Espinal

Theses

Given the limited regenerative capacity of the mammalian retina, cell-replacement strategies are necessary. To replace photoreceptors lost to disease or trauma and restore visual function, laboratories throughout the world are researching photoreceptors replacement strategies using subretinal transplantation of retinal progenitor cells (RPCs). A major obstacle to the advancement of photoreceptor cell-replacement strategies includes low rates of invasion and integration of transplanted cells into the host retina. Currently, there is a limited understanding of how RPC glycolysis may facilitate invasion. To further understand RPC glycolysis-driven invasion, the current investigation involved the bioenergetic modulation RPCs for glycolysis analysis and invasion modeling. The …

This Month, Jennifer N. Figueroa

Theses

This Month is a series of collages that depict police violence at civil rights and Black Lives Matter protests. By pairing events from 1964 to contemporary protests that occurred in the same month, the collection draws a connection between the past and present.
