Increasing Comprehension Strategies Through Reciprocal Teaching, Kathlyn Garcia Benosa Jan 2006

Increasing Comprehension Strategies Through Reciprocal Teaching, Kathlyn Garcia Benosa

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of the study was twofold. First, it describes two research-based instructional strategies that have been effective in increasing reading comprehension (reciprocal teaching and using readers' response journals). Second, a quasi-experimental research design was created to determine the educational impact of these two strategies on the reading comprehension levels of elementary-aged English Language Learners (ELLs). The data was collected from a low socioeconomic elementary school, specifically looking at a second grade classroom. The classroom demographic included eighteen students, ten of which were English Language Learners. Both informal and formal assessments were used to determine growth across time. The overall …

Perceptions Of A Culturally Sensitive Hiv/Aids Curriculum, Yolanda Vivian Mouton Jan 2006

Perceptions Of A Culturally Sensitive Hiv/Aids Curriculum, Yolanda Vivian Mouton

The focus of the study was to explore to what degree culturally sensitive HIV/AIDS curriculum and materials were perceived as important by African-American students. Students selected for the research (N=121) were from a high school in San Bernardino, California, an area that represents a multiethnic population. Frequency descriptions and bivariate corrrelations were conducted to analyze the data. Trends found in this study indicated African-Americans did not perceive cultural sensitivity as an important aspect of HIV/AIDS education, and correlations between the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) score of African-Americans and their perceptions of the need for culturally sensitive HIV/AIDS education materials …

The Effects Of (Rs)-Mcpg On Amphetamine-Induced Sensitization In Neonatal Rats, Fiona Yeuk-Lun Choi Jan 2006

The Effects Of (Rs)-Mcpg On Amphetamine-Induced Sensitization In Neonatal Rats, Fiona Yeuk-Lun Choi

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) in the ontogeny of amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization. Eleven-day-old rat pups were given five daily bilateral infusions of the mGluR antagonist, (RS)-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine (MCPG) followed by a systemic injection of amphetamine and locomotor activity was measured. It was hypothesized that rats receving amphetamine pretreatment and an amphetamine challenge would exhibit a significant increase in activity, indicating short-term behavioral sensitization. As predicted, repeated amphetamine administration during the pretreatment phase produced progressively enhanced locomotor activity, indicating the development of behavioral sensitization. The effect of MCPG on locomotor activity appears …

Software-Based Gradient Nonlinearity Distortion Correction, Thomas Seward Lee Jan 2006

Software-Based Gradient Nonlinearity Distortion Correction, Thomas Seward Lee

Theses Digitization Project

The primary purpose of the thesis is to discuss the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in functional proton radiosurgery. The methods presented in this thesis were specifically designed to correct gradient nonlinearity distortion, the single greatest hurdle that limits the deployment of MRI-based functional proton radiosurgery systems. The new system central in the thesis fully utilized MRI to provide localization of anatomical targets with submillimeter accuracy. The thesis provides analysis and solutions to the problems related to gradient nonlinearity distortion. The characteristics of proton radiosurgery are introduced, in addition to a discussion of its advantages over other current methods …

The Structure Of Semisimple Artinian Rings, Ravi Samuel Pandian

Theses Digitization Project

Proves two famous theorems attributed to J.H.M. Wedderburn, which concern the structure of noncommutative rings. Proofs in this paper follow those outlined in I.N. Herstein's monograph Noncommutative Rings with examples and details provided by the author.
