Volunteer Effectiveness On Nonprofit Organizations, Brianna Yanice Mariscal
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
When a parent gets told their child has cancer it is a life changing and devastating moment. Although there are many factors that cause pediatric cancer, one thing remains constant. Families need to feel supported during these difficult times as their main priority is being with their child. Jacob’s Heart Children's Cancer Support Services is a nonprofit organization in California that operates on donations, grants, staff and volunteer support to alleviate burdens accompanied by a pediatric cancer diagnosis. Volunteers are vital for nonprofit organizations as they provide dedication to fulfill the organization's mission. Surveys were conducted to measure the effectiveness …
Homework Perpetuating Inequalities For Low-Income Families In Education, Eileen Boyd
Homework Perpetuating Inequalities For Low-Income Families In Education, Eileen Boyd
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This capstone project delves into the persistent issue of homework perpetuating inequalities among low-income families. Drawing on insights from North American public school teachers who have shared their perspectives and experiences, this research employs a combination of literature reviews, teacher interviews, and anonymous surveys. The collective evidence underscores the unsettling fact that homework drives educational disparities. Consequently, it calls for a broader acknowledgment among educators and schools that homework often hinders rather than enhances a student's academic achievements.
Implications Of California State Standards In Relation To Disordered Eating For School Aged Children, Jessica De Mott
Implications Of California State Standards In Relation To Disordered Eating For School Aged Children, Jessica De Mott
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Food is a part of people’s lives, even when it is not acknowledged. It is distinctly tied to various cultures, ethnicities, and religions; with elements of restriction and gluttony abundant. Then, there is the complication of modern nutrition and health education that is taught in American, and more specifically in Californian schools. But, the education received on this issue has failed some students. Many school aged children reported that they experienced disordered eating, and learning content has further exacerbated this issue. This senior capstone research will examine the implications of California State Standards in relation to disordered eating for school …
Improving Species Distribution Models Of Continental Shelf Fishes Off California, Kinsey Matthews
Improving Species Distribution Models Of Continental Shelf Fishes Off California, Kinsey Matthews
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Species distribution models (SDMs) relate species occurrences, or abundances, with oceanographic or bathymetric data to predict species distributions. SDMs are used to forecast the effects of climate change on species distributions, evaluate existing protected areas and identify locations for future protected areas, estimate the effects of invasive species on a community, and determine how community assemblages change spatially or temporally. Articles describing marine SDMs are becoming increasingly common in the scientific literature; however, their efficacy for predicting the distribution and relative abundance of continental shelf fishes off California is not universally accepted. SDM performance can be affected by the inclusion …

Marine animals often move beyond national borders and exclusive economic zones resulting in a need for trans-boundary management spanning multiple national jurisdictions. Highly migratory fish vulnerable to over-exploitation require protections at international level, as exploitation practices can be disparate between adjacent countries and marine jurisdictions. In this study we collaboratively conducted an analysis of white shark connectivity between two main aggregation regions with independent population assessment and legal protection programs; one off central California, USA and one off Guadalupe Island, Mexico. We acoustically tagged 326 sub-adult and adult white sharks in central California (n=210) and in Guadalupe Island (n=116) with …

A variety of criteria may influence the efficacy of networks of marine protected areas (MPA) designed to enhance biodiversity conservation and provide fisheries benefits. Meta-analyses have evaluated the influence of MPA attributes on abundance, biomass, and size structure of harvested species, reporting that MPA size, age, depth, and connectivity influence the strength of MPA responses. However, few empirical MPA evaluation studies have used consistent sampling methodology across multiple MPAs and years. Our collaborative fisheries research program systematically sampled 12 no-take or highly protective limited-take MPAs and paired fished reference areas across a network spanning 1100 km of coastline to evaluate …

Assessing The Vulnerability Of Monterey Bay Area Seniors To Covid-19, Ethan A. Quaranta, Gerhard L. Gross
Assessing The Vulnerability Of Monterey Bay Area Seniors To Covid-19, Ethan A. Quaranta, Gerhard L. Gross
Culture, Society, and Praxis
This paper assesses the vulnerability of seniors residing in the Monterey Bay Tri-County Region to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to weakened immune systems, seniors are the most at-risk members of our community to COVID-19, and have a death rate that is three times higher than the overall death rate to COVID-19. Using standard ambulance response times from each hospital throughout the area, our objective is to determine what proportion of Tri-County seniors aged 65 and over, including those who are in nursing homes, are living independently, and cannot afford health care, were within an adequate travel time to the hospital. …
Associating Landscape Variables With Nesting Occupancy And Success Of Songbirds Using Nest Boxes In Semi-Urban Greenspaces, Amanda Preece
Associating Landscape Variables With Nesting Occupancy And Success Of Songbirds Using Nest Boxes In Semi-Urban Greenspaces, Amanda Preece
AES Theses
Habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity due to urbanization is happening at a rapid pace. Greenspaces within our cities can provide habitat for native species, and effective management of urban and semi-urban parks is an increasingly important way to support these species. I compared landscape metrics surrounding nest boxes used by five avian species in four semi-urban parks of central coastal California, USA, to determine which land cover elements best predicted nest box occupancy and success. Five species were included in this study – Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens), Chestnut-backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens), Oak Titmouse (Baeolophus …

Importance Of Grief And Loss Support, Omar I. Cortez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The capstone was implemented at the Safety Nest, a wellness center that provides socio-emotional and mental health services to all students within Everett Alvarez High School through the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports multi-tiered system. The school serves 2,664 students; 90.2% of Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, and it is part of the Salinas Union High School District. The social problem addressed by the project is that “There are too many high school students in California experiencing emotional distress, which can result in academic failure, substance use, or suicide”. The project consisted of collaborating with the NEST’s Behavioral Intervention Specialist to implement an …
2016 - California Land Use And Management - A Resource Management Strategy Of The California Water Plan
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
Land use planning and management cuts across many resource management strategies. More efficient and effective land use is linked to several resource management strategies including watershed, water use efficiency, groundwater quality, flood management, parks and recreation, climate change adaptive management and agricultural lands stewardship. Directly development away from agricultural lands permits multi-objective management of these lands for agricultural preservation, floodplain management, water quality, habitat conservation, and sustainable development. In addition, planning for more compact and sustainable communities, both urban and rural, will assist in reducing reliance on the state-s water supply, and result in more efficient use of California’s water …

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
Writing principally about the portion of North America border on the Pacific Ocean between the 40th and 54th parallels of latitude (Oregon), Greenhow found it necessary to also include the regions known as California that extended southward from the Columbia River to the Californian Gulf. Recognizing that the territories were becoming increasingly more important due to the advancement of the population of adjoining countries towards the territories; from the constant increase of the trade and navigation of several countries claiming powers in the Pacific. The difficulty of effecting an amicable partition of the territories was becoming more urgent. …
