This senior capstone study aims to investigate the impact of Americanization on immigrant students whose first language is not English and the effects of Proposition 227. This law, which cut all state funding for bilingual programs, prompted significant changes in language education policies. Through surveys, this research seeks to determine whether Proposition 227 has influenced students' cultural identity or academic success. Additionally, this study examines California education standards to understand how they influence language education practices. The focus of this senior capstone is to examine the benefits of using the Montessori method to teach literacy to TK-2 grade children. This encompasses children ranging from ages four to eight. Through the use of literature review on how the Montessori method developed, reviews of records, and interviews with Montessori professionals, the result findings indicate that the use of the Montessori method to teach literacy does indeed benefit TK-2 children. A practice engaged in by many immigrant youth who interpret and translate oral and written language for their own family. Typically, these language events occur as part of everyday life and involve the need for communication. In this case the brokers that we will be focusing on are children and adolescents with parents whose primary language is Spanish. Many of these children are a reliable source for their parents to communicate and understand a primary language in a country where they migrated to.

This study characterized the ways in which non-English speaking Latino parents demonstrate their commitment to secondary education and investigated the factors that cause non-English Latino parents to feel unwelcome at a public secondary education institution. The 33 participants of the study were self-identified non-English speaking Latino parents of students enrolled at a middle school in the central coast valley of California. The parents participated in one of three ways: (a) a one-on-one interview, (b) group interview or (c) they completed a home-sent questionnaire. This research explored how the drawings of five-to seven-year-old children reflect their interests and emotions. This research also evaluated the role these drawings played in their literacy education and development. Two groups of students were compared in regards to the impact drawing had on their literacy development. The experimental group received the drawing intervention while the control group received literacy instruction only. Teachers were interviewed to ascertain whether the intervention affected the students’ literacy development, as well as to gain insight into children’s thinking emanating from their drawings. What is the poverty of language? In researching this topic, many researchers who study linguistics and sociolinguistics have reported that language acquisition is affected by social class. Researchers have reported that the lower and working class struggle more frequently in the attainment of Standard or "Cash" English when compared to upper or middle-class students. After reviewing several sources, I find that problems with the "poverty of language in education" include low requirements for cognitive skills in the workplace, lack of reading and writing skills attained by the working class, and the minimal funding of education in working class neighborhoods.
