Ready, Set, Involved: The Power Of Parents, Maria Chavez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Parental involvement can be highly beneficial to students’ educational success. However, involvement is an issue for English Language Learning (ELL) students, as well as for their parents. Many of these parents want to be involved, but there are many factors that get in the way. School faculty need to be more proactive on informing parents about resources available to them and other ways they can become more involved in their child’s education. The purpose of this research is to understand what schools are doing today to involve parents and how they are reaching out to them. After interviewing teachers and …

Empowering Hispanic English Language Learners For Academic Success, Tanya Navarro
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The following senior capstone research project examines the issue of empowerment of Hispanic English Language Learners (ELLs). Through the construction of this literature review and through interviews with various specialists at a middle school level, the following were identified as issues that have impacted the ELL students: academic disparities, dropout rate, modified curriculum, cultural relevance and lack of motivation and aspiration. The result findings indicate that there is a need to implement culturally relevant curriculum and instructions along with language support that could facilitate and empower the ELL students for academic success.
English Language Learners And Reading Comprehension: Exploring The Role Of Vygotsky’S Sociocultural Theory Of Mind (Sct), Brad Bauer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Research shows middle school students to be lagging in reading comprehension proficiency and the problem is worse for English Language Learners (ELLs). Weak literacy development among ELLs may lead to higher dropout rates, poor job prospects, and high poverty rates. There is a need for evidence-based reading interventions for ELLs to help close the achievement gap. Theoretically framed within the sociocultural theory of Vygotsky (SCT), the present study investigated how a SCT-based intervention might improve ELLs reading comprehension. Five, grade seven ELL students were selected to participate in a single-case A-B design. Results indicated reading comprehension improved for three of …

Examining The Effect Of Flipped Learning On English Language Learner Mathematics Achievement, Kimberlee Margosian
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
English Language Learners (ELLs) are falling behind in mathematics according to the new standardized tests that assess mastery of the Common Core State Standards (Smarter Balanced Test Results, 2017). Simultaneously, flipped learning models have gained momentum in the past decade. Recent studies have found this pedagogical shift to be promising in improving achievement if implemented correctly (Bhagat, Chang, & Chang, 2016; Hung, 2015, Lai & Hwang, 2016; Tawfik & Lilly, 2015; Zengin, 2016). This study used a pre- and post-test quantitative quasi-experimental design to compare the achievement of a mathetmatics standard between the treatment group (n = 30), who received …
