Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark Dec 2005

Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents a Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) motion planning algorithm to be queried within Dynamic Robot Networks—a multi-robot coordination platform for robots operating with limited sensing and inter-robot communication. First, the Dynamic Robot Networks (DRN) coordination platform is introduced that facilitates centralized robot coordination across ad hoc networks, allowing safe navigation in dynamic, unknown environments. As robots move about their environment, they dynamically form communication networks. Within these networks, robots can share local sensing information and coordinate the actions of all robots in the network. Second, a fast single-query Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) to be called within the DRN …

Foreign Investment And Disparities In Economic Development And Poverty Reduction: A Comparative-Historical Analysis Of The Buddhist Countries Of Southeast Asia, Harold Kerbo Dec 2005

Foreign Investment And Disparities In Economic Development And Poverty Reduction: A Comparative-Historical Analysis Of The Buddhist Countries Of Southeast Asia, Harold Kerbo

Social Sciences

To remain economically competitive in the 21st century a nation must be able to secure resources beyond its borders and protect itself from other nations trying to do the same. While the situation has been shown to be more complex, the original assumption among world system researchers remains that multinational corporate penetration in the periphery can have negative effects on their prospects for economic development. But we now know that these negative effects upon long-term economic development can be prevented. The existence of a strong development state can be critical for this protection. In addition to supplying ‘good governance’ (as …

Ambivalent Sexism, Scriptural Literalism, And Religiosity, Shawn Meghan Burn, Julia Busso Dec 2005

Ambivalent Sexism, Scriptural Literalism, And Religiosity, Shawn Meghan Burn, Julia Busso

Psychology and Child Development

This correlational study explores the hypothesis that religiosity and scriptural literalism (the degree to which one interprets scriptures literally) are associated with sexism. Participants were female and male (N = 504) university students who anonymously completed the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (Glick & Fiske, 1996, 1997, 2001a, 2001b), the Scriptural Literalism Scale (Hogge & Friedman, 1967), and the Religious Orientation Scale–Revised (Gorsuch & McPherson, 1989). Intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, and scriptural literalism were positively associated with benevolent, but not hostile, sexism. Intrinsic religiosity and scriptural literalism were positively related to the protective paternalism subscale, whereas extrinsic religiosity was related to the …

Central Bank Independence In A (Very) Non-Neoclassical World, Eduardo Zambrano Dec 2005

Central Bank Independence In A (Very) Non-Neoclassical World, Eduardo Zambrano

Economics

What if it could be possible to convince a completely non-neoclassical economist of the importance of Central Bank independence? The profession currently favors arguments in favor of Central Bank independence that are based on the seminal work by Barro and Gordon (1983 a,b), a model with naturally strong neoclassical assumptions. As a consequence of this, the argument in favor of Central Bank independence routinely given by economists is often not bought by those who question the validity of the neoclassical assumptions. In this paper I argue that Central Bank independence can be beneficial for society even when the economy is …

On Some Subtle Implications Of The Choice Of Numeraire For Monetary Policy In Developing Countries, Eduardo Zambrano Dec 2005

On Some Subtle Implications Of The Choice Of Numeraire For Monetary Policy In Developing Countries, Eduardo Zambrano

Economics

Numeraire choice is often deemed a problem of purely analytical convenience. In this paper I show that there is more to numeraire selection than meets the eye for the formulation of monetary policy in countries with weak fiscal institutions. I show how (a) improper numeraire choice can dramatically overstate or understate Central Bank profits and (b) how this can threaten the ability of a Central Bank to keep inflation under control. I show point (a) in the context of Monte Carlo experiments calibrated for the Venezuelan economy and point (b) in an infinitely lived representative agent model that illustrates the …

Existence And Uniqueness Of V-Asymptotic Expansions And Colombeau’S Generalized Numbers, Todor D. Todorov Dec 2005

Existence And Uniqueness Of V-Asymptotic Expansions And Colombeau’S Generalized Numbers, Todor D. Todorov

Mathematics

We define a type of generalized asymptotic series called v-asymptotic. We show that every function with moderate growth at infinity has a v-asymptotic expansion. We also describe the set of v-asymptotic series, where a given function with moderate growth has a unique v-asymptotic expansion. As an application to random matrix theory we calculate the coefficients and establish the uniqueness of the v-asymptotic expansion of an integral with a large parameter. As another application (with significance in the non-linear theory of generalized functions) we show that every Colombeau’s generalized number has a v-asymptotic expansion. A similar …

The Potential For Real-Time Traffic Crash Prediction, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande, Liang Y. Hsia, Fathy Abdalla Dec 2005

The Potential For Real-Time Traffic Crash Prediction, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande, Liang Y. Hsia, Fathy Abdalla

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The development of freeway crash prediction models using intelligent transportation systems (ITS) archived data could be a substantial advancement in the field of real-time traffic management. Such models not only are expected to improve safety but also may go a long way to improve freeway operations by reducing incident-related congestion.

Because there is a need to use real-time traffic data emanating from loop detectors, the approach differs distinctly from previous studies estimating crash frequencies or rates on a certain freeway section through aggregate measures of flow (such as average daily traffic or hourly volumes).

Although the authors try to establish …

A Framework For Management Of Semistructured Probabilistic Data, Wenzhong Zhao, Alex Dekhtyar, Judy Goldsmith Dec 2005

A Framework For Management Of Semistructured Probabilistic Data, Wenzhong Zhao, Alex Dekhtyar, Judy Goldsmith

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper describes the theoretical framework and implementation of a database management system for storing and manipulating diverse probability distributions of discrete random variables with finite domains, and associated information. A formal Semistructured Probabilistic Object (SPO) data model and a Semistructured Probabilistic Query Algebra (SP-algebra) are proposed. The SP-algebra supports standard database queries as well as some specific to probabilities, such as conditionalization and marginalization. Thus, the Semistructured Probabilistic Database may be used as a backend to any application that involves the management of large quantities of probabilistic information, such as building stochastic models. The implementation uses XML encoding of …

Select Listeria Monocytogenes Subtypes Commonly Found In Foods Carry Distinct Nonsense Mutations In Inla, Leading To Expression Of Truncated And Secreted Internalin A, And Are Associated With A Reduced Invasion Phenotype For Human Intestinal Epithelial Cells, K. K. Nightingale, K. Windham, K. E. Martin, M. Yeung, M. Wiedmann

Biological Sciences

The surface protein internalin A (InlA) contributes to the invasion of human intestinal epithelial cells by Listeria monocytogenes. Screening of L. monocytogenes strains isolated from human clinical cases (n=46), foods (n=118), and healthy animals (n=58) in the United States revealed mutations in inlA leading to premature stop codons (PMSCs) in L. monocytogenes ribotypes DUP-1052A and DUP-16635A (PMSC mutation type 1), DUP-1025A and DUP-1031A (PMSC mutation type 2), and DUP-1046B and DUP-1062A (PMSC mutation type 3). While all DUP-1046B, DUP-1062A, DUP-16635A, and DUP-1031A isolates (n=76) contained inlA PMSCs, ribotypes DUP-1052A and DUP-1025A ( …
