Nibley Teams Up With Brigham Young To Look At Politics, Education, Leadership, And The Environment

As those who have read much Brigham Young know, the combination of this pioneer prophet's insight, articulateness, and candor is little short of stunning. Nibley calls him a "monumental figure," perhaps (after Joseph Smith), the most prominent mind of his century.

Performance Gaps And Opportunities For Growth: Addressing Remote Learning In Nevada, Anna Dreibelbis-Colquitt

BYU Education & Law Journal

Although education is not a fundamental right under the United States Constitution, it is nonetheless deemed as “perhaps the most important function of state and local governments.” The importance of education is reinforced through the Nevada Constitution. Specifically, Article 11 states that “[t]he legislature shall provide for a uniform system of common schools,” which is seen through the public school system. However, this ‘uniform’ system drastically changed two years ago with the surge in online learning.

Meti Volume Highlights Education, D. Morgan Davis

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Consider this picture: A sandy courtyard some- where on the outskirts of a desert village. A group of boys—ages perhaps 8 to 16—are gathered outside the entrance to a simple, well-worn little building. They are seated or kneeling in the sand, huddled in the last vestiges of the late morning shade. Each holds a text or a tablet. Some are reading, some are looking out to where the pale sky meets a broken line of housetops and trees, reciting, in a quiet murmur to themselves, the words of the book they are holding. Some gently rock back and forth as …

Abc For Gingerbread Boy And Me!, Erica Sonzogni May 2022

Abc For Gingerbread Boy And Me!, Erica Sonzogni

Children's Book and Media Review

Learning the ABCs is a foundational skill, and while alphabet books are not always the most exciting, this one is more mundane. Each page dedicated to one letter focuses on putting that letter at the beginning of the word, with the exception of x, which is in the final letter in its word so readers can understand the sound that letter makes. The photographs and the examples for each letter are basic. D shows a door, dog, doctor, dime, duck, and dinosaur. Familiar words do allow children to learn, but a unique word or item would add interest. Despite the …

She Dared: Malala Yousafzai, Jennifer Haltli

Children's Book and Media Review

When the word Taliban was spoken in the Swat Valley, ten-year-old Malala watched her dreams of becoming a doctor disappear. The long-bearded men in black turbans wandered out of the mountains, advocating for the strictest parts of Islamic law in a modernizing Pakistan and often enforcing their views at gunpoint. Because she was a top student in the all-girls school her father owned, Malala’s brilliant mind starved when the Taliban forced her school to close. So, at eleven, Malala began giving covert speeches about girls’ rights to education and collaborating secretly with journalists. Following her return to her war-torn city …

Alphabet: Gg, Liz Kazandzhy

Children's Book and Media Review

This addition to the Alphabet series about the letter G is great. Each two-page spread features a simple sentence with an abundance of the letter G, and each usage is clearly highlighted in a bold font. On the corresponding page is a full-page photograph showing what the sentence is describing. For example, “Gia gives Grandma a great big hug” shows a girl with her arms around her grandmother as they peel potatoes in the kitchen. There are nine sentence-photograph pairs, as well as additional G words and a glossary included at the end.

Lack Of Quality Civic Education In Public Schools In The United States, Sydney Ward Jan 2022

Lack Of Quality Civic Education In Public Schools In The United States, Sydney Ward

Ballard Brief

A lack of quality civic education affects nearly every K-12 student in the United States. The content and methods of civic education curriculum focus on memorization, lecture, and textbook learning, creating an ineffective learning method for students. Teachers are met with polarized classrooms and communities, creating hesitancy to approach political topics while inequity in funding between states and districts leaves schools without consistent resources or emphasis on civics. legislative policies and nonprofit organizations have dictated some of civic education's most recent standards and practices, though this federal approach has not been universally adopted in local classrooms. As a result of …

Child Labor In Myanmar, Alyssa Augustus Jan 2022

Child Labor In Myanmar, Alyssa Augustus

Ballard Brief

In Myanmar, there are approximately 1.1 million children between the ages of 5 to 17 involved in child labor. Domestic demand, familial poverty, Myanmar's education system, government laws, and filial piety perpetuate the employment of children. Child laborers suffer from physical health issues, are more likely to drop-out of school, and stall the growth of a skilled labor force in Myanmar. Focusing on educating child workers and re-funding the Myanmar Program on the Elimination of Child Labor can eliminate the number of children involved in the employment sector.

Racial Inequality In Public School Discipline For Black Students In The United States, Emily Peterson Sep 2021

Racial Inequality In Public School Discipline For Black Students In The United States, Emily Peterson

Ballard Brief

Racial bias and limited teacher training all influence how teachers and administrators react to Black student misbehavior. In addition, recently implemented institutional practices like zero-tolerance policies and increased emphasis on school security have also contributed to increases in the rate of disciplinary measures, especially suspension, for Black students. Experience with school discipline can significantly harm student academic achievement and increase the likelihood of Black students dropping out of school. More involvement with school discipline on the student's part is also associated with more serious consequences including decreased likelihood of enrollment in higher education and increased likelihood of involvement with the …

Lack Of Menstrual Hygiene Management Among Women And Girls In East Africa, Lizzie Kearon Jan 2021

Lack Of Menstrual Hygiene Management Among Women And Girls In East Africa, Lizzie Kearon

Ballard Brief

Women and girls in East Africa, as well as many other parts of the world, live in a culture where menstruation and reproductive health are not discussed. This is because menstruation and anything related to it is considered taboo. Both women and girls often do not understand the reproductive cycle of their bodies or know how to manage their menstruation. Girls commonly miss or drop out of school because they do not understand what is happening to them or are unaware of how to hygienically manage their natural cycle. The issue is perpetuated by menstrual hygiene products being expensive and …

Ballard Brief

Armenia is one of many countries whose population faces mental health struggles to a relatively high degree. A few of the most prominent …

Indigenous Adult Illiteracy In The Andean Region Of South America, Alexa Ballard Jan 2021

Indigenous Adult Illiteracy In The Andean Region Of South America, Alexa Ballard

Ballard Brief

Indigenous adult illiteracy is often prevalent in poorer, less economically stable regions, such as the Andean Region of South America, specifically Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The issue stems from several factors, such as language discrepancies, high dropout rates, and lack of access to quality education. Consequently, illiterate indigenous adults are more likely to suffer from poor health and low-quality employment. Women are more likely to suffer domestic violence and discrimination, and in general, illiteracy for both men and women contributes to decreased civic engagement and economic stability. Several programs currently exist to help illiterate individuals in the Andean Region, such …

Educational Disparities Among Girls In India, Jenna Cook Sep 2020

Educational Disparities Among Girls In India, Jenna Cook

Ballard Brief

There are great educational disparities among girls in India. Low literacy rates and lack of education are some of the inequalities found in this demographic. Many of these girls are raised without the expectation that they will complete their education, and since they become the mothers of the next generation, educational disparities become a cyclical. intergenerational issue. Many other factors contribute to the lack of education, such as cultural values, child marriage, a scarcity of feminine hygiene products, and child labor. The continued shortage of formal education among young females leads to poverty, decreased child well-being, health issues, and increased …

Lack Of Educational Opportunities For The Roma People In Eastern Europe, Morgan Selander, Emily Walter

Ballard Brief

Additionally. some cultural traditions of the Roma (such as their occupations, migratory patterns, and early …

Administering Medical Marijuana At School In Colorado: A Legal Analysis, Spencer C. Weiler, Philip Westbrook

BYU Education & Law Journal

The topic of this legal analysis is the administration of medical

marijuana to students attending Colorado K-12 public schools.

Colorado has been a pioneer in legalizing the use of marijuana. Beginning

in the year 2000, Colorado voters approved Amendment 20

legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. This law specifically

allows minors to receive a prescription for medical marijuana

under certain conditions. An unintended consequence of this law

is that minors meeting its requirements are requesting, along with

their caregivers and physicians, to have marijuana-based medication

Sexual Violence Against Female College Students In The United States, Lauren Wolters, Macy Smith

Ballard Brief

Sexual violence against female college students is a prevelant and deep-rooted issue across universities in the us. Despite an increase in attention from the federal government. it is predicted that 1 in 4 women will experience sexual violence as undergeradute students. A pattern of university negligence surrounding cases of sexual violence suggests that universities prioritize securing funding and protecting perpetrators over aiding victims and preventing sexual assault. Several other factors contribute to the occurence of sexual violence including dangerous fraternity traditions. extensive alcohol and drug use among college students, and vast normalization of sexual violence-but the only true cause of …
