Teacher Attrition: Work Condition Perception Differences, Scott P. Harris, Randall Davies, Steven Christensen, Joseph Hanks, Bryan Bowles

Student Works

The purpose of this study was to identify differences in perceptions between three stakeholder groups – principals, K-12 teachers, and parents – regarding the effect of workplace conditions on teacher attrition. All three groups agreed that workplace conditions are important, but they disagreed about (a) which workplace conditions are most problematic for teachers, (b) the magnitude of these problems, and (c) the degree to which these problems may contribute to teacher leaving. The greatest disagreements occurred in perceptions of (a) teacher being involvement in decision-making, (b) protection of teacher preparation time, (c) administration’s management of student discipline, (d) adequacy of …

Parental Influence On Sedentary Behavior In Children: A Systematic Review, Kaitlyn Albrecht Bsn, Rn, Neil Peterson Phd, Rn, Np-C, Agacnp-Bc, Jane Lassetter Phd, Rn

Student Works

The purpose of this systematic review is to appraise and synthesize the evidence regarding parental influences on sedentary behavior (SB) in children and explore associations promoting parent-based interventions. Prominent research in the last decade has established SB as a health risk, but to our knowledge, no systematic reviews observing parent to child SB associations have been conducted. Inclusion criteria required publication in the English language, utilization of objective measures for SB evaluation, and samples that included the 11 to 17 year age range, thus yielding a total of 15 identified studies. PRISMA guidelines were used to lead the search methodology …

Gender Roles In The United States, Robert Bush Dec 2019

Gender Roles In The United States, Robert Bush

Student Works

Can men and women be separate but equal? In our modern society, equality of the sexes is generally accepted as a fact. However, according to Separate Spheres Ideology, women and men have different spaces in society where they fit best. This ideology traditionally says that women belong in the home and in situations involving child care, while men are better suited for the workplace (Miller & Borgida, 2016). Can men and women be expected to fulfill separate roles in society and still be treated as equals? What positive or negative effects do gender roles have on individuals and organizations? Are …

Lithic Material Procurement And Processing Of The Ancestral Puebloans In Montezuma Canyon, Richae Knudsen Sep 2019

Lithic Material Procurement And Processing Of The Ancestral Puebloans In Montezuma Canyon, Richae Knudsen

Student Works

Recent analysis of lithic materials from Ancestral Puebloan sites in Montezuma Canyon demonstrates differences between the northern and southern sites in terms of practices of lithic procurement and processing. Materials from Alkali Ridge and Coal Bed Village had more lithic debitage without cortex, while those from Cave Canyon Village and Three Kiva Ruin had a much higher frequency of debitage with cortex. These data sets suggest that the northern sites performed primary flaking away from home, while those in the south did their primary flaking at home. This distinct behavior may be a result of differential access to lithic material …

Decoherence Of Open Systems Of Coupled Oscillators And Qubits, Kevin Randles, Jean-François S. Van Huele, Manuel Berrondo Aug 2019

Decoherence Of Open Systems Of Coupled Oscillators And Qubits, Kevin Randles, Jean-François S. Van Huele, Manuel Berrondo

Student Works

In this paper we develop a method of solving the dynamics of minimal open systems of coupled oscillators and qubits. Extracting the time-dependence of the system from its underlying Lie algebra of operators we find the time evolution operator, allowing us to explore the evolution of various initial states of the system and environment. For these initial states we find the linear entropy, a measure of decoherence of the system, and visualize the dynamics using Husimi functions and Bloch spheres for oscillator and qubit systems, respectively. We find that increasing the interaction of the system with its environment results in …

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (Pots): A Primer For Nurse Practitioner Practice, Emily Richards Aug 2019

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (Pots): A Primer For Nurse Practitioner Practice, Emily Richards

Student Works

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a form of orthostatic intolerance (OI) that affects 0.2% of the population and is over-represented in women of childbearing age. It is caused by autonomic dysfunction and hypovolemia that presents with marked tachycardia and with minimal change in blood pressure upon standing. Orthostatic symptoms must be present including: lightheadedness, nausea, chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, and nausea and must improve with recumbence. The three main subtypes of POTS are neuropathic POTS associated destruction of peripheral nerves and venous pooling, hypovolemic POTS associated with low blood volume, and hyperadrenergic POTS associated with inappropriate sympathetic …

Freedom of speech and censorship balance on a precarious scale in the US. With the advent of social media, this balance has been troubled due to the migration of public conversation to a private space where freedom of speech is no longer ensured. This paper dives into the complexities of free speech and censorship, their current status in the US today, the way that social media and private ownership challenge their balance, and concludes with an argument for a democratized balance through modest government oversight.

Harriet Beecher Stowe: She's Not What You Think, Margaret (Maggie) E. Logan

Student Works

The common perception has always been that when it comes to matters of race relations, Harriet Beecher Stowe is as close to perfect as a person can get. Americans’ opinion of her are usually very high. She is known for being a canonical figure when it comes to civil rights, a pioneer. When people hear the name, they usually think positive things. They think about the books she has written and how she helped start the Civil War to free the slaves. Attached to Stowe’s name is the idea that she was someone who looked out for the rights and …

Not All R & R Is Good: Religiosity And Racism Within Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Emma Judd

Student Works

In their 1857 collaborative Christmas novella, The Perils of Certain English Prisoners, Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins present various instances of blatant and unabashed racism on the island of Silver-Store. From nearly the beginning, the story’s narrator, Gill Davis, notes, “I have stated myself to be a man of no learning, and, if I entertain prejudices, I hope allowance may be made. I will now confess to one. It may be a right one or it may be a wrong one; but, I never did like Natives, except in the form of oysters” (12). This racist attitude is not …

Just Do It: The Value Of Being A Doer In Wilkie Collins’S And Charles Dickens’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Kori Anne Dryer

Student Works

In Wilkie Collins’s and Charles Dickens’s 1857 novella The Perils of Certain English Prisoners and Their Treasure in Women, Children, Silver, and Jewels, the inhabitants of Silver-Store are presented with a unique definition of worth and value. The text discusses many types of value: intellectual value, physical value, productive value, etc. The collaborating authors present a pattern of having the white-male characters’ worth on the island of Silver-Store as action-based: that the doers of the society are seen as more valuable than those that are passive in the society. Gillian Ray-Barruel extrapolates on this unequal idea of social value …

English Prisoners In Their Unnatural Habitat: Conquering Nature In The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners By Wilkie Collins And Charles Dickens, Madeline Christensen

Student Works

Charles Dickens is most famous for writing about urban spaces and environments such as the city of London. However, as Joseph Carroll points out, there are numerous "prominent British depictions of wild nature" and these depictions of nature find their way into the "cultivated tracts of British domestic fiction" (305). It is this relationship, between the cultivated and uncultivated wilderness that Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins touch upon in their collaborative 1857 Christmas novella, The Perils of Certain English Prisoners, and Their Treasure in Women, Children, Silver, and Jewels. Collins and Dickens explore the relationship between humans and nature …

The Knights Of The River Rafts: Leadership Of The Common Citizens And Soldiers In Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Annika Carlson Jun 2019

The Knights Of The River Rafts: Leadership Of The Common Citizens And Soldiers In Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Annika Carlson

Student Works

The 1850s are infamous for the political scene within the British Empire and her colonies. The Crimean War against Russia, a rebellion in India treated as a mutiny against the empire, and a shifted focus to international issues over domestic problems highlighted every mistake and misstep of the largely aristocratic government. Rumbles of discontentment arose from the working class within Britain as they watched governmental neglect produce massive repercussions at home and abroad. Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins wrote their 1857 novella The Perils of Certain English Prisoners with these perceived political disasters and leadership failures in mind. Leslie Mitchell …

"They Simply Act": Muscular Christian And Domestic Soldiers In Charles Dickens's And Wilkie Collins's The Perils Of Certain English Prisoners, Kathryn Sumsion

Student Works

This paper discussion of Charles Dickens's and Wilkie Collins's use of domestic soldiers and muscular Christian soldiers in the 1857 Christmas novella,The Perils of Certain English Prisoners. It covers the frustration among Victorian society and especially the two authors regarding colonial government after the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. They bring the military forward as an alternative source of governing colonial power. Dickens characterizes ideal military power in the form of muscular Christian soldiers, while Collins favors domestic soldiers. In the end, both military roles are proved to be necessary in colonial governance.

We present ReSORtSAC: Recursively-seeded optimization, refinement, sample, and consensus. ReSORtSAC is a novel algorithm that can be used to estimate the relative pose between consecutive frames of a video sequence. Relative pose estimation algorithms typically generate a large number of hypotheses from minimum subsets and score them in order to be robust to noise and outliers. The relative pose is often represented using the essential matrix. Previous methods calculate essential matrix hypotheses directly without utilizing prior information. These equations are complex to evaluate and can return up to ten essential matrix solutions for each minimum subset, all of which must …

Reevaluating African Women’S Inheritance Rights In Indigenous Customary Law And Statutory National Law, Mallory Matheson, Ashleigh Heinze May 2019

Reevaluating African Women’S Inheritance Rights In Indigenous Customary Law And Statutory National Law, Mallory Matheson, Ashleigh Heinze

Student Works

When indigenous customary law violates women’s rights, how can national legal systems ensure justice for women while respecting regional cultural sovereignty? Which entities, if any, hold the jurisdiction to enforce compliance with statutory national law--and should they? I examine the tension between indigenous customary and statutory national law on women’s inheritance rights in Botswana, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. I argue that grassroots efforts to induce gender-based societal change must develop in tandem with institutional and legal reformation, as gender-egalitarian sociocultural foundations will best incentivize compliance with women’s inheritance rights. I propose three key tasks: mobilize women to achieve legal awareness, secure …

Student Works

This paper explores the similarities between folklore and Shakespeare's play,The Tempest. Not only is The Tempest an example of a folkloric story, this paper looks at how this play calls to attention the importance of story and the need for story to adapt in order to survive. Folklore is an oral tradition that is living, or continually adapting. Shakespeare's plays, while written are also performances which can be adapted through interpretations and by adapting to new genres. It is this adaptability which allows Shakespeare's works to continue to thrive and it is this adaptability which will determine how …

Music, Shakespeare, And Redefined Catharsis, Megan Jae Hatt Apr 2019

Music, Shakespeare, And Redefined Catharsis, Megan Jae Hatt

Student Works

The definition of catharsis has changed since the time of Aristotle. A person does not only experience catharsis out of pity or fear from theatric tragedies; they also experience it through laughter, love, and simply immersing themselves into the emotions presented by different forms of media. This essay reviews the catharsis one can experience through contemporary music and Shakespeare as they become submersed in the emotions and spectacle of each respective media. In this essay, I compare and contrast contemporary music and Shakespeare text and performance in order to relate them to this new definition of catharsis by including different …

Children As The Power Of Shakespeare, Samantha Rowley Apr 2019

Children As The Power Of Shakespeare, Samantha Rowley

Student Works

An dive into how children are used in Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets. While there has been some extensive research on numerous of Shakespeare’s minor characters, some of his other characters, the minors, have been focused on less. Because they fly under the radar, Shakespeare uses these “minor” characters in order to subtly manipulate his audience, using them as a source of pathos in much the same way adults use children to manipulate audiences while silencing the actual opinions of the children they claim to represent. However, though he may often use children for this effect due to their fragility, Shakespeare …

The Divinity That Shapes Our Ends: Theological Conundrums And Religious Scepticism In Hamlet, Kyler Merrill Apr 2019

The Divinity That Shapes Our Ends: Theological Conundrums And Religious Scepticism In Hamlet, Kyler Merrill

Student Works

This paper proposes that Shakespeare deliberately incorporated speculative theology into Hamlet to stimulate religious scepticism. It explores the troubling implications of the ghost’s behaviour, cinematic adaptations of the murder testimony, and the characters’ moral failings in the purportedly Catholic cosmos of Elsinore.

“And Those That Are Fools, Let Them Use Their Talents”: Looking At The Power Of Music In The Hands Of Shakespeare’S Wise Fools, Noelle M. Conder

Student Works

This paper explores Shakespeare’s fools and their use of music. Throughout Shakespeare’s plays, he developed two different styles of fools: the “natural fool” based on the acting style of Will Kemp, and the “artificial fool” based on the acting style and personality of Robert Armin. Armin also helped influence Shakespeare’s increased use of music through his career. Artificial fools use music for two main purposes; either as a shield from the negative repercussions of their words, or as a weapon to more effectively persuade their audience to something. As a shield, the fools make use of the cultural connection between …

Fight, Flight, And Freeze: Human Responses In A Business Strategy Environment, Michael Nixon Mar 2019

Fight, Flight, And Freeze: Human Responses In A Business Strategy Environment, Michael Nixon

Student Works

Fight, flight, and freeze responses are a natural part of how we operate as humans. These responses permeate our lives and affect our decisions in major ways. This thesis first employs a case study to help the reader understand natural reaction processes, then analyzes case studies where businesses applied strategies that closely resembled these reaction processes. I then propose a framework to mimic physiological reaction processes to help companies arrive at the optimal solution.

Removing Racism Or Erasing History? The Modern Confederate Conversation, Grant Baldwin Feb 2019

Removing Racism Or Erasing History? The Modern Confederate Conversation, Grant Baldwin

Student Works

Should Americans continue to honor the symbols and leaders of a group who rebelled against their country and fought to preserve the enslavement of African Americans on the basis of preserving heritage? In this paper, I look through American history and identify how the Confederate symbols in question have been connected with racism throughout the past. I then debunk some of the misconceptions commonly associated with Southern history and the Confederate symbols. I conclude with the outcomes of the recent removals in New Orleans and Dallas and address how this debate connects to the issue of racial injustice.
