Improving Library Instruction Through Experiential Learning And Experience Design, Matt Armstrong
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The Harold B. Lee Library has been a long-standing partner with the university's Writing 150 GE program. Every semester the library provides three days of instruction, when the students learn about library resources and how to conduct research. This project redesigned the first session where students learn about navigating the library and learning what resources are available. The project combines experiential learning and experience design to create a more engaging experience for first-year students.

The German/Russian 399r Internship Programs For Byu Online, Sean Worsley
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The initial request of creating a BYU Online Canvas course for the GERM 399R and RUSS 399R internship course came from the German and Russian Departments on BYU campus. The client requested a course redesign based on student data from previous iterations of the internship course which indicated a decline in student satisfaction due to poor organization, difficult navigation, and the large quantity of homework.
The new product consisted of two courses (GERM 399R and RUSS 399R) housed within the Canvas learning management system (LMS) and was informed by a learner analysis, qualitative interviews, and iterative prototyping.
The improved internship …
Personalized Feedback: Testing A Tutoring System That Was Informed By Learning Analytics, Mckenzie Emmett Staples
Personalized Feedback: Testing A Tutoring System That Was Informed By Learning Analytics, Mckenzie Emmett Staples
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
Computer-based tutoring systems have been extensively studied and shown to be generally effective. In this study, I worked with an online beginner’s course that teaches spreadsheets basics to business students. I designed four sets of practice problems that utilized a new tutoring feedback system that was designed for this course. In order to test the effectiveness of this feedback system, 839 Brigham Young University students that utilized this online course were randomly assigned to either a treatment condition where they worked through these new practice problems with the accompanying feedback system, or to a control condition, where they worked through …

Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The purpose of this project was to create an open educational resource (OER) for guiding in-service and pre-service K-12 teachers, as well as their administrators, in blending the K-12 classroom. The field of K-12 blended teaching research needs blended teaching competencies, as well as the instructional materials needed to meet such competencies. This OER text helps to meet this need. The development project included background research for content as well as features needed for a quality guidebook, included working with multiple authors and designers across the country, and analyzing evaluations of the work provided by researchers in the field and …

Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
To augment the classroom language learning and practice students receive, it is beneficial to provide opportunities for authentic, unrehearsed practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing the language of study. The Spanish Civil War Museum Exhibit 5-day Simulation is a Playable Case Study (PCS) wherein students of advanced Spanish language may develop critical literacy skills, cultural competence, and linguistic proficiency in the Spanish language. The purpose of this PCS is to immerse students in an authentic narrative that takes place within emails, video chats, and other online activities with the goal of curating a museum exhibit on the Spanish Civil …

Re-Designing A Computer Science Course In Higher Education, Nathan Fox
Re-Designing A Computer Science Course In Higher Education, Nathan Fox
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The computer science department at Brigham Young University feels a need to standardize its courses across instructors. The purpose of this project was to standardize CS 235, the second programming class in the computer science major/minor. There were two existing versions that I evaluated to understand which teaching methods, assessments, and technologies used in each course led to better student outcomes and redesigned a new course based on what appeared to be most effective across courses. The CS department wanted the curriculum to (a) promote deeper learning; (b) help students transition to more proactive, self-paced, student-owned learning; (c) be more …
