Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been shown to have life-long consequences. The trail of trauma often associated with negative childhood experiences can impact students as they go through the developmental stages of adolescents all the way through adulthood. The number of students that have been affected by trauma is increasing. Trauma impacts students’ developing brains, including concentration, memory, behavior, self-regulating ability, perception and cognitive deficits, and impaired academic performance. Teachers are learning how to cope with the lack of students’ academic success and behaviors who have been affected by trauma. When staff is not adequately trained, some consequences include secondary trauma, lead to burn-out. Research has shown characteristics of individuals with ASD that have been exposed to trauma are difficult to determine. With more of trauma at an early age and the overshadowing of characteristics between trauma and ASD it will be difficult to determine where an individual is demonstrates ASD characteristics or PTSD characteristics. Evidence suggests that individuals with ASD are at an increased risk of exposure to trauma due to their social communication deficits and emotional control. This literature review explores the background of trauma, the physiological effects of trauma on the developing child, and effective trauma informed strategies to assist educators in meeting the challenging needs of all students, especially those who have experienced trauma. Longitudinal research shows that trauma is prevalent and its effects are long lasting. Various effects of trauma contribute to dysfunction in brain processes, which results in academic and behavioral deficits. Recent research has shown that an astounding number of children have faced adverse childhood experiences. Due to this fact, many of the students sitting in American classrooms have traumatic backgrounds that can cause a variety of side effects including a lack of academic focus, depression, PTSD, and low social-emotional abilities. Schools are the perfect place to implement trauma sensitive frameworks to provide these students an accessible education. Effective trauma sensitive schools are relational, empowering, and consistent. With these traits, research has shown that depression and PTSD symptoms can be reduced, behavior problems can be decreased, and attendance can increase.

The author of this paper has worked in special education since 1988, primarily with Emotional and Behavioral Disordered (EBD) students. Throughout the author's career there have been many conversations about why some students display EBD behaviors. Through many years of teaching and numerous professional conferences, it was not until January 2016 that the author heard about ACES. This piqued the author's curiosity.
