Girlpwrd: Amplifying Silenced Voices Of Women Through Digital Storytelling, Brooke Schumann

English Theses

Drawing on data from a multi-month digital storytelling community project, this qualitative case study offers portraits of three marginalized women who re-author pivotal moments of silencing in their lives. The foundational framework blends scholarship on rhetorical silence, rhetorical listening, and semiotics of multimodal expression. These cases demonstrate how digital storytelling allows women a space to form and give voice to their silence, where they are the empowered agents of their own stories. The digital platform elevates these underrepresented narratives by creating new pathways for listening.

A Call To Create: Poetry As Healing And One Nurse’S Self-Discovery, Kim Cornett Henry, Kim Cornett Henry

English Theses

Florence Nightingale’s vision for nursing has changed greatly in the past one hundred and fifty years, with nursing’s identity replaced with an emphasis on science over caring. The fast-paced, technologically sophisticated environments, designed to meet the declining health of an American public, have resulted in nurses who are being pulled away from nurse-to-patient caring acts and the reasons they felt called to become nurses. These changes have had detrimental psychological and emotional effects on nurses and are especially evident in Intensive Care nurses. Expressive writing as poetry, autoethnography, and participation in vibrant writing communities offer nurses experiences for healing, voice, …

A Teacher's Companion For The Emerging Electric Orchestra, Rachael Greenman

Recital Papers

Historically orchestral string instruments have been defined as classical instruments. As a result in primary and secondary school programs students have been relegated to playing music by Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Those programs and that world is rapidly evolving. A broad range of new electric string instruments and technologies are being introduced into the classroom and everything from pop to rock to show tunes are being played engaging students in new and exciting ways. The challenge for teachers and administrators is how to start such a program in their school. This thesis explores the unique challenges and opportunities that this …

Teaching Songwriting And Incorporating Popular Music In Beginning Group Piano, Sarah Andrews Aug 2021

Teaching Songwriting And Incorporating Popular Music In Beginning Group Piano, Sarah Andrews

Student Theses

This thesis examines how incorporating popular songwriting is an effective way to teach keyboard skills to music majors in a traditional undergraduate music school. Basic keyboard skills taught in group piano are similar to the skills used in writing and performing a popular song. Connecting students to popular music inspires students and keeps them motivated to practice keyboard skills that are more tedious but considered necessary for learning the instrument. This thesis is divided into two parts. Part I offers the history of pedagogical trends in group piano from the eighteenth century until present day, focusing specifically on practicality, improvisation, …

It also investigates the specific contributions the French School made to the concept of flute sound, including tone development and technique. This thesis begins with an exploration of the famous French flutist Marcel Moyse and his various method books. The paper …

Seven Percussion Compositions, Standard And New, Kramer Reed Sell Aug 2021

Seven Percussion Compositions, Standard And New, Kramer Reed Sell

Recital Papers

The modern percussionist sees further by standing on the shoulders of standard percussion composers and by composing, commissioning, and performing new works. Achieving an enriched performance of both standard and new percussion pieces occurs through proper research and analysis. By examining repertoire through historical, theoretical, and executional lenses, a performer gains insight into the deep meaning and context of a composition. Careful study of a composer and his or her canon of works also affects comprehension and performance.

Implementing Process Pedagogy In The High School Classroom: How To Improve Student Writing While Helping Students Enjoy Writing, Laura Mahaney

English Theses

Traditionally and currently, teachers also focus on the product and not the process in their own classroom. They will assign a paper with a final due date, students turn in their papers without having anyone else look at it beforehand, and students will get a final grade on what is their first draft. This way of teaching writing does not show students how to improve their writing. With this type of assessment, the natural processes of a person’s mind while writing is ignored; students are expected to have everything in their paper in the first draft and without support. Process …

Creating Sustainable Volunteer Programs: Understanding Why United4hope's Church Coordinators Volunteer, Stanley Weber Jul 2021

Creating Sustainable Volunteer Programs: Understanding Why United4hope's Church Coordinators Volunteer, Stanley Weber

Student Theses

Abstract Using the Volunteer Function Inventory (Clary et al., 1998), this descriptive research study gathered mean, median, and mode data of 42 United4Hope Church Coordinators (UCC) to further understand why each UCC had chosen to volunteer. This study is significant for U4H since these critical leaders provide leadership without traditional power sources and lead volunteers who can freely choose whether or not to follow. When applying Clary et al.’s (1998) 6-factor clusters, data showed that values (a means to express one’s altruistic and humanitarian values) motivation factors were the most significant factor across the group. This factor was followed by …

Melodies Of Love: An Exploration Of Popular Love Songs And Love Styles According To The Ancient Greeks, Kevin Blackmon

Recital Papers

I conducted an investigation and application of how different types of affection, as expressed in Classical Greek philosophy, are conveyed in commercial music with love songs. I also analyzed how various love songs demonstrate these different meanings of affection. Through my discoveries, I applied the standards of these ideas to my music. I focused on the common characteristics that each love song shares. I divided each analysis of musical ideas and concepts that contain similarities into the six subsections of Jan LaRue’s SHRMGT framework: SHRMG(T) stands for sound, harmony, melody, rhythm, growth, and text. The focus for each song will …

Enhancing Performance Through Research And Analysis, Sarah Brewer Apr 2021

Enhancing Performance Through Research And Analysis, Sarah Brewer

Recital Papers

Music can be both deeply expressive and highly academic. One can create beautiful music by intuition alone, using both what is written on the page and their own musicality to produce a unique version of any musical work. A musician can also create beautiful music by utilizing research and analysis of a work to determine proper performance practice, reveal composer intentions, and inform musical decisions for a piece of music. By using both analytical and expressive methods, the performer can effectively produce art, giving a piece the potential to exist in versions varying in detail but authentically communicating the message …

Integrating The Concept Of Trauma Into An Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum, Jacey Walker Apr 2021

Integrating The Concept Of Trauma Into An Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum, Jacey Walker

DNP Scholarly Projects

Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are early childhood traumas such as abuse, neglect or household dysfunction that can cause chronic physical and mental health problems across the lifespan. Approximately 61% of the adults in the United States have experienced ACEs. The prevalence of ACEs among nurses is at least comparable to population prevalence, and rates may be higher in subpopulations of individuals who work in helping professions. The stressful and highly interpersonal nature of nursing work may exacerbate and compound the health impacts of a nurse’s underlying ACEs, affecting not only the nurse’s health, but also his or her work …

Impact Of A Telephone-Based Care Management Program On Health Outcomes For Patients With Type 2 Diabetes And Hypertension, Abbegail Miller

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (HTN) were the 7th leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for over 160,000 deaths annually. Complications related to T2DM and HTN are preventable with lifestyle modifications and medications. However, research has shown that lack of patient self-management, poor medication adherence, and physician time restraints limit disease improvement. A telephone-based care management program (CMP) provides a solution to meeting patient needs. Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to evaluate individual biomarkers for glycemic and HTN control, as well as self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) over one year of …

Self-Reliance And Self-Efficacy As Determinants Of Mental Health Treatment Seeking Intention In A Sample Of Student Service Members/Veterans, Leigh Holdsambeck Apr 2021

Self-Reliance And Self-Efficacy As Determinants Of Mental Health Treatment Seeking Intention In A Sample Of Student Service Members/Veterans, Leigh Holdsambeck

DNP Scholarly Projects

Problem Statement: High rates of mental illness and poor treatment seeking have plagued the military for decades. As an organization that demands resilience, sacrifice, strength, and courage from its members, many servicemembers develop deep-seated self-reliance and self-efficacy. Though essential in many critical situations, these traits often complicate a servicemember's willingness to seek care for a mental health concern. Student servicemembers/veterans (SSM/Vs) are at an increased risk for poor mental health outcomes owing to the compounded stressors of military service and academia. Purpose: To measure the impact of elements of military service, namely self-reliance and self-efficacy, on mental health …

Music And Nationalism: The Complex Relationships Of Sibelius, Bach And Shostakovich With Their Respective Countries, Deena Rizkalla

Recital Papers

One of the most defining characteristics of the nineteenth century is the global phenomenon of nationalism. In the wake of the French Revolution, countries began to conceive of national self-determination, a concept which “holds that every ‘nation,’ a unified community of people with a desire and capacity for self-governance, is entitled to exclusive control of its own territorial state” (Keitner 2007, 2). In order to strengthen national identity, countries needed to foster a sense of belonging in their population, and the most prominent way they achieved that was through the cultivation of culture. Literature, art, and music bonded people together …
