Dogma: How A Convenient Narrative Led To The Holocaust, Morgan Rynn Schroeder Aug 2023

Dogma: How A Convenient Narrative Led To The Holocaust, Morgan Rynn Schroeder

History: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

I developed this research paper as a result of my study abroad experience in Germany in June of 2023. In this paper I weave a combination of personal experience, primary sources, and works by historians to explain how Nazi ideology developed into genocide. I also emphasize the importance of how history is remembered in the form of monuments and museums.

Household Charitable Giving Among U.S. Working-Class Families, 1918-1919, Joanna Short Jul 2023

Household Charitable Giving Among U.S. Working-Class Families, 1918-1919, Joanna Short

Economics: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

This paper examines household charitable giving in the period just before the New Deal increased government involvement in social services. The 1918-19 BLS Cost of Living Survey provides a window on middle-class giving to church, charity, and patriotic organizations, as well as investment in Liberty Bonds. A lognormal hurdle model is used to estimate the probability of any giving, and the amount given, to different types of organizations. From this, we estimate income elasticities of giving and the substitutability of giving to different types of organizations. The results are compared to findings from studies on modern giving. I find that …

Ai Art: Artists’ Best Friend Or Mortal Enemy?, Ethan Gabrys Jun 2023

Ai Art: Artists’ Best Friend Or Mortal Enemy?, Ethan Gabrys

Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research

This paper analyzes the impacts and implications of generative AI software on art and examines the ethics of using such tools. Through the argument that careless use of these tools presents a danger to the art world as they risk devaluing human expression, Gabrys states that “as what it means to be human changes with each generation, new artists express sentiment through their art. Art has the ability to tell us about the human experience.” He concludes that the use of AI tools takes the skill and sentiment of human artists out of the equation, begging the question: if the …

Zarzuela: Musical Theater Expresses The True Spanish Identity, Rachel Anne Heikkinen May 2023

Zarzuela: Musical Theater Expresses The True Spanish Identity, Rachel Anne Heikkinen

Music: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This essay will examine the history and traditions behind zarzuela which contribute to how composers portray the real Spanish identity in their works. Through the analysis of El barberillo de Lavapiés by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri and La Gran Vía by Federico Chueca, I note the value placed on the working-class people in Madrid and the abomination of Spanish authority and the elite. Zarzuelas show the stories, customs, and values of the everyday people which these composers argue are the true values of Spain. Through the laughter of this humorous medium, zarzuelas reveal the truth about the importance of the lower …

Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence Apr 2023

Inhabiting "Sore Butt Cracks": Queering The U.S. Long-Term Care System, Alison Lawrence

Women's and Gender Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In the face of a failing long-term care system, the author positions a queer theoretical lens as a potential source of creativity and empathy to help us build a care system that supports the dignity and personhood of all patients. The comedic work of a long-term care patient, Youtuber Clay-The-Comedian, is analyzed through a queer-theories lens as a new approach to long-term care that celebrates the personhood of all types of bodies, while also never diminishing the often difficult reality that folks in need of care face. This queer rhetoric engages with the messy, embodied experiences of patients to develop …

The Impact Of Shredders On Leaf Decomposition In The Silver Creek Watershed, Charlie Zielinski Apr 2023

The Impact Of Shredders On Leaf Decomposition In The Silver Creek Watershed, Charlie Zielinski

Environmental Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The carbon released from leaf decomposition plays a critical role in the riparian ecosystem and aquatic food web. By testing rates of leaf decomposition in urban streams we can survey the health of a watershed by sampling the carbon release amidst key locations in the area. In this study, we had two objectives: The assessment of the role of shredder macroinvertebrates in leaf decomposition, and the assessment of leaf decomposition rates across sites in Silver Creek. This project is part of the long term assessment of Davenport streams conducted by Augustana College's Upper Mississippi Center. We hypothesized that by excluding …

Hosts/Saints/Witches: Women And Food Under Catholicism In Love Medicine, Blake Traylor Apr 2023

Hosts/Saints/Witches: Women And Food Under Catholicism In Love Medicine, Blake Traylor

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

In her novel Love Medicine, among her other works, Louise Erdrich displays an overt interest in American religions. She especially probes the tensions between Christianity, imported by European colonizers, and indigenous spiritual traditions. Gender is another prominent concern of Erdrich's writing; here also, she juxtaposes native and settler concepts of gender, underscoring indigenous women's struggles in the twentieth century. Both of these topics have already been explored, though often separately. Erdrich curiously places food imagery, sometimes unassuming and sometimes bizarre, at the intersections of religion and gender throughout the novel. Erdrich draws on Catholic traditions solidified in medieval Europe …

Gender As An Environmental Stressor In Individuals Genetically Predisposed To Mood Disorders: A Preliminary Analysis, Kara West Apr 2023

Gender As An Environmental Stressor In Individuals Genetically Predisposed To Mood Disorders: A Preliminary Analysis, Kara West

Audre Lorde Writing Prize

Given the recent ‘epidemic’ of mental health disorders, we urgently need to better understand who is suffering and how. One aspect of this that research has come closer to identifying is where symptoms and diagnoses are missed in certain individuals, especially based on gender. However, if certain genders are actually more likely to deal with certain disorders we need to understand why and where that comes from. There is a general consensus in the medical field that some individuals are simply genetically predisposed to various disorders based on sex, but there is limited evidence that sex actually determines genetic predisposition. …

Environmentalism: Flint Michigan Water Crisis, Zamzam Mohammed Jan 2023

Environmentalism: Flint Michigan Water Crisis, Zamzam Mohammed

Religion: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This essay examines the public health hazard of Flint Michigan that affected tens of thousands of individuals predominately Black and African Americans. This event was not only systematic, but it portrayed a sense of racial bias and environmental injustice. Not only were Flint residents getting sick due to the unhealthy supply of water source but they were silenced. Unfortunately Black and African Americans felt undermined and oppressed. The underdevelopment and unethical abandonment of the city portrays how much power and authority the city officials possess. Their disregard for the health hazard proves that they care more about monetary gain than …

A Close Look At The Concept Of Authority In Information Literacy, Stefanie Bluemle Jan 2023

A Close Look At The Concept Of Authority In Information Literacy, Stefanie Bluemle

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

The concept of authority—its definition and the consequences thereof—receives intense scrutiny in library scholarship. This article intervenes in that debate with attention to the larger political context in which the debate is taking place. The article’s purpose is threefold. First, it analyzes the most significant work on authority from philosophy and information studies in order to explicate the concept. Second, it draws on that explication to identify three components of authority that are under-addressed in library literature: a) the distinction between cognitive authority and political authority, b) the means by which authority is recognized or granted to a source, …
