Parental Influence On Inhalant Use, Alina Baltazar, Gary Hopkins, Duane C. Mcbride, Curtis J. Vanderwaal Dr., Sara Pepper, Sarah Mackey

Curtis VanderWaal

The purpose of this article is to examine the dynamics of the relationship between parents and their adolescent children and their association with lifetime and past-month inhalant usage. The population studied was seventh- through ninth-grade students in rural Idaho (N = 570). The authors found a small, but consistent, significant inverse correlation between parental bonding and monitoring of behavior and inhalant usage. There was also a significant positive correlation between verbally aggressive behavior in the family and inhalant use. The data imply that family interaction may play a significant role in the use of inhalants and that the family can …

Evaluating Information In Theological Education: A Framework For Discussion [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson Jun 2012

Evaluating Information In Theological Education: A Framework For Discussion [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson

Terry Dwain Robertson

Information literacy as pedagogy targets the novice learner, and provides guidance in evaluating sources. Critical thinking dispositions and hermeneutical considerations are then employed to evaluate the claims. The standard output is some type of communication format which is then evaluated for competence. This pedagogical model works well in those areas of study in which facts are readily verifiable through means consistent with scientism, such as medicine and technology, so as to assume a single correct answer. But in the domain of spiritual knowledge, there is an added complexity: the pluralism embedded in history, culture, confessional commitments, and so forth. How …

The Connection Between Slavery And Prophecy As It Related To The American Nation In The Writings Of The Adventist Pioneers During The Antebellum Period, Trevor O'Reggio, Dojcin Zivadinovic May 2012

The Connection Between Slavery And Prophecy As It Related To The American Nation In The Writings Of The Adventist Pioneers During The Antebellum Period, Trevor O'Reggio, Dojcin Zivadinovic

Trevor O'Reggio

The period between 1850 and 1865 was a period of major social upheavals in American society; the major issue was the slavery. This period also witnessed the birth and organization of the Sabbatarian Adventism, a pre-millennial Christian movement distinguished by an emphasis on the Seventh-day Sabbath and a special understanding of Bible prophecies. Most Adventist pioneers vehemently opposed slavery, although not always on the same ground as their Christian counterparts. Aided by their peculiar understanding of Bible prophecy, the early Adventists identified America with apocalyptical end-time power, slavery being the key attribute of the “beast that looks like a lamb …

Drug Treatment Program Ownership, Medicaid Acceptance, And Service Provision., Duane C. Mcbride, J. Chriqui, Y. Terry-Mcelrath, M Mulatu

Duane McBride

The Institute of Medicine noted that effective substance abuse treatment (SAT) programs integrate individual therapeutic approaches with transitional/ancillary services. In addition, research suggests that type of ownership impacts SAT services offered and that Medicaid plays a key role in SAT access. Data from the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services for the years 2000 and 2002–2006 were used to examine relationships among SAT program Medicaid acceptance, program ownership, and transitional/ancillary service accessibility. Multivariate logistic regression models controlling for state- and program-level contextual factors were used to analyze the data. Nonprofit SAT programs were significantly more likely to offer transitional/ancillary …

E-Texbooks Usage By Students At Andrews University: A Study Of Attitudes, Perceptions, And Behaviors, Silas Bruscagin Marques Dr.

Silas Bruscagin Marques Dr.

Abstract Although e-books have been incorporated into the academic library’s collection for over a decade now, it has not been, until today, without question. It is still, as the literature reveals, a controversial topic for librarians, publishers, and users around the globe. Although many researches indicate that patrons still prefer the printed format over the electronic version, the tipping point seems to be reaching us earlier then many might think. The growing availability of e-books to users has begun to affect user perceptions and attitudes, creating more access and usage opportunities, a recent research concluded. This paper presents the results …

"Mirrors Of The Dance": Finding The Interplay Between The Static And The Dynamic In Biblical Ritual And Ancient Near Eastern Iconography, Gerald Klingbeil Jan 2012

"Mirrors Of The Dance": Finding The Interplay Between The Static And The Dynamic In Biblical Ritual And Ancient Near Eastern Iconography, Gerald Klingbeil

Gerald Klingbeil

Action is an important element in ritual and refers to the interplay of ritual objects/participants in space and time which results in the performance of the ritual itself (cf. Klingbeil2007:18). While both biblical ritual texts and ANE iconography depicting religious/ritual activities describe a dynamic, action-oriented reality, both are in fact static snapshots of an ancient reality or concept. Within the thematic framework of this particular session of the Ritual in the Biblical World consultation, this paper tries to look for an interface between ritual and iconographic studies by focusing upon the interaction between the dynamic and the static. The two …

Ellen G. White’S Life Of Christ: An Episode In The History Of Early Adventist Translation Work, Denis Kaiser Jan 2012

Ellen G. White’S Life Of Christ: An Episode In The History Of Early Adventist Translation Work, Denis Kaiser

Denis Kaiser

In the late 1880s and early 1890s a book on the life of Jesus Christ was published in various foreign languages in Europe and North America. Ellen G. White was given as the author of the book. It generally went under the English working title The Life of Christ although there never has been a published English counterpart to these foreign language editions. The circumstance of those editions raises the question of their textual basis, background, and significance. The present article shows that the Life of Christ is an adapted version of Spirit of Prophecy, vols. 2 and 3, …
