Toward A Systematic Theology Of The Sanctuary: Part 1, John C. Peckham Dec 2018

Toward A Systematic Theology Of The Sanctuary: Part 1, John C. Peckham

Faculty Publications

This article is part one of an essay that offers some preliminary thoughts regarding the relationship of the sanctuary and systematic theology, focusing on just a few aspects which expose the relationship between the two. This article considers the nature of theological systems, issues related to an Adventist system of theology, and the relationship between fundamental theology and the sanctuary in particular, with attention to some broad, competing views of the sanctuary that are integrally related to the way one conceives of broader theological principles. This sets the stage for the second article, which will conclude the essay by discussing …

A Program To Treat Hepatitis B In North Korea: A Model Of Antiviral Therapy In A Resource-Poor Setting, Marcia Ann Kilsby, Alice Unah Lee, Heidi Linton, David C. Hilmers

Faculty Publications

Despite the well-proven, safe and effective therapies for hepatitis B infection, delivery of treatment remains a significant challenge in resource-poor settings. Geopolitical and economic restrictions present additional difficulties in providing care in North Korea. However, treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis B remains a top priority for both the North Korean Ministry of Public Health and international agencies working in North Korean hepatitis healthcare facilities. Working in partnership, a path was created to institute this much-needed program. A consortium of United States and Australian humanitarian non-governmental organizations along with generous individual and corporate donors working in concert with local and …

Carboxypeptidase O Is A Lipid Droplet-Associated Enzyme Able To Cleave Both Acidic And Polar C-Terminal Amino Acids, Linnea C. Burke, Hazel O. Ezeribe, Anna Y. Kwon, Donnell Dockery, Peter J. Lyons Nov 2018

Carboxypeptidase O Is A Lipid Droplet-Associated Enzyme Able To Cleave Both Acidic And Polar C-Terminal Amino Acids, Linnea C. Burke, Hazel O. Ezeribe, Anna Y. Kwon, Donnell Dockery, Peter J. Lyons

Faculty Publications

Carboxypeptidase O (CPO) is a member of the M14 family of metallocarboxypeptidases with a preference for the cleavage of C-terminal acidic amino acids. CPO is largely expressed in the small intestine, although it has been detected in other tissues such as the brain and ovaries. CPO does not contain a prodomain, nor is it strongly regulated by pH, and hence appears to exist as a constitutively active enzyme. The goal of this study was to investigate the intracellular distribution and activity of CPO in order to predict physiological substrates and function. The distribution of CPO, when expressed in MDCK cells, …

Credit for prior learning (CPL), also known as prior learning assessment, has become more salient in current conversations on postsecondary attainment than ever before” (ACENET). In this session we’ll explore where AU is on the ACE CPL Implementation Matrix, while answering a dozen questions, foundational to serving traditional and non-traditional students in a digital age of “free-range learning” (Smith, 2018).

Protest And Progress: Black Seventh-Day Adventist Leadership And The Push For Parity [Book Review] / Calvin Rock, Trevor O'Reggio Oct 2018

Protest And Progress: Black Seventh-Day Adventist Leadership And The Push For Parity [Book Review] / Calvin Rock, Trevor O'Reggio

Faculty Publications

Rock has carefully crafted and persuasively argued a historically well-documented and powerful account of the struggles of African-Americans to achieve some level of equality and justice within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Because of the paucity of this information within the larger Adventist historiography, his book is a much-needed work that fills a vacuum. It should be read by all Adventist leaders concerned about justice and equality within the organization.

Ending Domestic Violence--No Time To Waste, Beverly J. Sedlacek, David Sedlacek

Faculty Publications

The church plays an important role in creating a safe community and an environment in which intimate partner violence (IPV) is addressed, not covered up. An appropriate understanding of Scripture is also protective. Local churches must become aware of resources in their communities designed to help both victims and perpetrators. The message that violence of any kind will not be tolerated must be clearly sent. Perpetrators must experience appropriate consequences along with the help they need. enditnow, the Adventist Church’s program to create awareness and help prevent IPV, must continue to be supported.

Scholarly Publishing In Korea: Language, Perception, Practice Of Korean University Faculty, Eun-Young Julia Kim

Faculty Publications

This study reports how internationalization of academic knowledge is reflected in the language choice of Korean academic journals across disciplines and examines perceptions and practices of eighty two faculty from various disciplines at three Korean universities concerning publishing in English journals. The results indicate that natural science has the highest percentage of English-medium journals whereas those in humanities and social science predominantly use Korean as a medium of publication. Similar disciplinary patterns are observed in the responses to survey questions about frequency of publication as well as desire and preference for publishing papers in English. The biggest motivation for Korean …
