Improved Upper Limits On The Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background From 2009-2010 Ligo And Virgo Data, Tiffany Summerscales, Ligo And Virgo Collaboration

Faculty Publications

Gravitational waves from a variety of sources are predicted to superpose to create a stochastic background. This background is expected to contain unique information from throughout the history of the Universe that is unavailable through standard electromagnetic observations, making its study of fundamental importance to understanding the evolution of the Universe. We carry out a search for the stochastic background with the latest data from the LIGO and Virgo detectors. Consistent with predictions from most stochastic gravitational-wave background models, the data display no evidence of a stochastic gravitational-wave signal. Assuming a gravitational-wave spectrum of ΩGW(f)=Ωα(f/fref)α, we place 95% confidence level …

Multimessenger Search For Sources Of Gravitational Waves And High-Energy Neutrinos: Initial Results For Ligo-Virgo And Icecube, Tiffany Summerscales, Icecube Collaboration, Ligo Scientific Collaboration And The Virgo Collaboration

Faculty Publications

We report the results of a multimessenger search for coincident signals from the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave observatories and the partially completed IceCube high-energy neutrino detector, including periods of joint operation between 2007–2010. These include parts of the 2005–2007 run and the 2009–2010 run for LIGO-Virgo, and IceCube’s observation periods with 22, 59 and 79 strings. We find no significant coincident events, and use the search results to derive upper limits on the rate of joint sources for a range of source emission parameters. For the optimistic assumption of gravitational-wave emission energy of 10−2  M⊙c2 at ∼150  Hz with ∼60 …

Faculty Publications

Abstract: The purpose of our study was to study the prevalence of exercise dependence (EXD) among college students and to investigate the role of EXD and gender on exercise behavior and eating disorders. Excessive exercise can become an addiction known as exercise dependence. In our population of 517 college students, 3.3% were at risk for EXD and 8% were at risk for an eating disorder. We used Path analysis the simplest case of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to investigate the role of EXD and exercise behavior on eating disorders. We observed a small direct effect from gender to eating disorders. …

The Most Important Thing You Need To Know About Parenting, Donna Habenicht

Faculty Publications

Parenting style—the big picture of child rearing—is described by two main aspects of the parent-child relationship: support and control. Support is our responsiveness to the child’s needs; control deals with how much power we wield over them. The way parents support and control their children affects the atmosphere of the home and the emotional tone of family interaction, which influences everything else that happens in the family.

Perceived Executive Leader’S Integrity In Terms Of Servant And Ethical Leadership On Job Burnout Among Christian Healthcare Service Providers: Test Of A Structural Equation Model, Jerry L. Chi, Grace Chu-Hui-Lin Chi

Faculty Publications

Integrity is a key component in the definition of servant and ethical leadership, and honesty, authenticity, sincerity, respect and righteousness are major virtues and descriptors that make up this leadership integrity. Many leadership studies indicate that the lack of integrity from a leader, as well as the perception of the lack thereof, will exhaust the employees’ exhilaration, degrade their physical and psychological health, and lead to frustration, fatigue and anxiety. For human service professions, this has become an occupational hazard for human service professions and is regarded as the last straw for workers, causing people to burnout and quit their …

The Forgotten Movement: Church Planting Trends And Lessons (Part 1 Of 2), S. Joseph Kidder, Dustin Serns

Faculty Publications

At the inception of the Advent movement, believers united to advance the cause of the gospel by entering new territory and starting new congregations. The Seventh-day Adventist Church experienced explosive growth, launching a movement that spread and continues to advance across the world. Today, 150 years later, the time has come to ask, How are we doing with raising up new congregations to finish the harvest in North America? To answer this question, we decided to look at statistics of the last century about church planting. We hope that the findings from this study will benefit the global church.

First All-Sky Search For Continuous Gravitational Waves From Unknown Sources In Binary Systems, Tiffany Summerscales, Ligo Scientific Collaboration And Virgo Collaboration

Faculty Publications

We present the first results of an all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown spinning neutron stars in binary systems using LIGO and Virgo data. Using a specially developed analysis program, the TwoSpect algorithm, the search was carried out on data from the sixth LIGO science run and the second and third Virgo science runs. The search covers a range of frequencies from 20 Hz to 520 Hz, a range of orbital periods from 2 to ∼2,254  h and a frequency- and period-dependent range of frequency modulation depths from 0.277 to 100 mHz. This corresponds to a range of …

Attitudes Toward Muslim Lebanese Women In Religious Resurgence: A Study Of 284 University Students, Bassima Schbley, Lori Maria Walton

Faculty Publications

The politicization of religion in the last few decades has created a climate ripe for religious resurgence in all areas of the world. The decreased role of religion among societies and effective secularization and modernization of the West have directly influence opposing factors of “religious resurgence”, “religious fundamentalism”, and “religious revivalism” as a sense of cultural preservation and balancing new social, economic, emotional and interllectural side effects of modernization growth (Sahliyeh, 1990). The effects of religious resurgence on Muslim Lebanese women’s efforts to enhance their freedom, equity, and civil rights need to be explored thoroughly to provide an adequate analysis …

Focus On Children's Ministry, S. Joseph Kidder

Faculty Publications

In researching growing Seventh-day Adventist churches in North America we discovered that the common denominator among these churches is their focus on children’s ministries. In the past, parents brought their children to the church and the Lord. Today, children bring their parents and friends to the church if they enjoy their experience there.

Reducing the quantity of hazardous substances used and hazardous waste generated by under- graduate laboratory experiments is important. However, simply replacing hazardous compounds with less hazardous reagents may not retain the pedagogical (or analytical) goal of the experiment if the chemistry does not fundamentally work. We evaluated several literature-based replacement oxidants for K2Cr2O7 (potassium dichromate) and identified KIO3 (potassium iodate) as the only che- mically viable alternative for thiosulfate standardizations, consistent with use of iodate by others. Using ANOVA analysis, two years of student results where K2Cr2O7 was used as the oxidant were compared with two years of student results …
