Abstract of “El laberinto del fauno: A Child’s Imagination and Coping with the Trauma of War”

Guillermo del Toro’s film El laberinto del fauno, known as Pan’s Labyrinth to English speaking audiences, opens up a fantastical world that is just a touch away from reality, but everyone believes this to be the imagination of one child, Ofelia. She tries to complete tasks and learns the truth of the land of post Civil War Spain that she currently resides in while she yearns for another. A child's imagination can be transported by a simple story; there seems to be a special …

P-24 Rethinking Diversity In A Hybrid Foreign Language Class, Daniela Ortiz

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

This poster session represents an ethnographic study of a hybrid foreign language class, focusing on the challenges created by students’ multiliteracy practices. Students range from high schoolers enrolled in dual programs, to heritage speakers, to adults who look for a career change. Reaching such a diverse group of students can be challenging but challenges create Third Spaces where learning is expanded and literacies improved (Smagorinsky, 2021; Gutierrez, 2011; Hulme et al., 2009; Lynch, 2008).

These Third Spaces are created by using diversity and even conflict as a source of students’ multivocal discovery of self. Heritage speakers often feel in limbo, …

P-05 Gender Budgeting And Gender Equality In Europe With Historical Data During 1994-2013, Jeniffer G. Ratulangi, Jerry L. Chi, Grace Chi

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Gender budgeting and gender equality in Europe plays a crucial role in inequality and development to have enjoyed sustained support. Inequalities have risen in some countries in recent decades due to factors such as globalization, technological change, taxation policy, and the economic crisis (Eurofound, 2022). Therefore, when high levels of inequality reduce growth in relatively poor countries but encourage growth in richer countries (Balls, 1999). This paper aims to examine the impact of gender budgeting processes on gender equality and fiscal space in European countries. Using secondary data research with a 45-item survey that measures participant gender budgeting and equality. …

P-36 The Delta-Crossing Number For Links, Zachary Duah Oct 2022

P-36 The Delta-Crossing Number For Links, Zachary Duah

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

An m-component link is an embedding of m circles into 3-dimensional space; a 1-component link is called a knot. The diagram for a link may be drawn so that all crossings occur within delta tangles, collections of three crossings as appear in a delta move. The delta crossing number is defined to be the minimal number of delta tangles in such a diagram. The delta crossing number has been well-studied for knots but not for links with multiple components. Using bounds we determine the delta crossing number for several 2-component links with up to 8 crossings as well as for …

P-37 Self And Mixed Delta Moves On Algebraically Split Links, Justyce Goode, Davielle Smith, Yamil Kas-Danouche, Devin Garcia, Anthony Bosman

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

A link is an embedding of circles into 3-dimensional space. A Delta-move is a local move on a link diagram. The Delta-Gordian distance between links measures the minimum number of Delta-moves needed to move between link diagrams. We place restrictions on the Delta-move by either requiring the move to only involve a single component of the link, called a self Delta-move, or multiple components of the link, called a mixed Delta-move. We prove a number of results on how (mixed/self) Delta-moves relate to classical link invariants including the Arf invariant and crossing number. This allows us to produce a graph …

P-01 Financial Reporting Fraud: How Merger And Acquisition Complexity Provide Greater Opportunities For Ceos To Engage In Wrongdoing, Carmelita J. Troy, Jong Chool Park, Madeline Domino

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Using mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as a proxy to increase organizational complexity, we build upon Schnatterly et al.’s (2018) framework to addresses the gap in the management literature relating to how major firm disruptions, such as M&As, provide greater opportunities to entrenched CEOs for financial statement fraud due to higher levels of complexity. We extend the research on complexity-based information asymmetries (Ndofor et al. 2015) by empirically investigating whether accounting fraud is linked to M&As using a diverse set of variables. We propose the complex nature of M&A transactions result in higher information asymmetry, which provides a “veil” for self-interested …

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Abstract

Calamities such as the 2007-2009 Great Recession, caused by the collapse of the housing market mainly incited by low interest rates and easy credit, leave a trail of profound and devastating damage in their wake. High rates of unemployment, stock market crashes and reduction in consumption rate etc. are but a few of the effects. There is evidence of certain nations being better equipped to field economic downturns such as recessions or environmental calamities such as floods and storms. The interest area for this research was to ascertain the impact that the 2009 great recession had on exports of …

P-13 Astronomy From Ripples In Spacetime, Tiffany Summerscales Oct 2019

P-13 Astronomy From Ripples In Spacetime, Tiffany Summerscales

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

The LIGO and Virgo detectors have made a total of 11 confirmed measurements of gravitational waves, the faint ripples in the fabric of spacetime predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Ten of these gravitational wave events were caused by the inspiral, collision, and merging of a pair of black holes and the remaining event by a pair of neutron stars. These measurements have helped us learn about the objects that produced the gravitational waves. Regular candidate detections are now shared in real time with both astronomers and the public.

P-20 Characterization Of Cgx Tautomerase And Mutants With Acetylenecarboxylic Acid, Daniel Chi, Karen Draths, Amaya Sirinimal

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

In the production of commodity chemicals through microbial synthesis, the use of renewable sugars as a raw material is increasingly common. However, this generates competition between its use in the chemical industry and the food industry. Therefore, developing alternative biosynthetic pathways involving other renewable feedstocks to replace starch-derived feedstocks is crucial. CgX, a tautomerase native to Corynebacterium glutamicum, catalyzes the hydration and subsequent decarboxylation of acetylenecarboxylic acid (ACA), a compound that can be produced from methane gas and carbon dioxide, both abundant greenhouse gases. The products formed from the CgX (wild-type)-catalyzed reaction of ACA results in a mixture of …

B-2 Same-Sex Marriage And The Apocalyptic Consciousness Of Seventh-Day Adventism, David Hamstra Oct 2018

B-2 Same-Sex Marriage And The Apocalyptic Consciousness Of Seventh-Day Adventism, David Hamstra

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Arguments made for and against affirming same-sex marriage in Seventh-day Adventism rely on typical moral background presuppositions about immanent and transcendent goods identified by Charles Taylor in his philosophical genealogy of A Secular Age. Arguments made only in terms of marriage’s immanent goods have the potential to diminish the plausibility of a uniquely Adventist way of imagining the transcendent: apocalyptic consciousness focused on the immanent/imminent restoration of Eden by Jesus Christ following the second coming. Comparing marriage to the this-worldly and next-worldly benefits of divergent Adventist Sabbath-keeping practices foregrounds the availability of immanentized moral presuppositions to make sense of …

The 2017-18 Global Church Member Survey conducted by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is designed to assess the quinquennial Church Strategic Plan (2015-2020). In designing this survey, we considered a variety of theoretical frameworks that could explain relationships between the target outcomes in the Strategic Plan. The resulting novel theoretical framework is based on Biblical principles and an integration of a number of frameworks in the social sciences: motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2008; Greenberg, Solomon, & Arndt, 2008; Koole, Greenberg, & Pyszczynski, 2006; Pyszczynski, Greenberg, & Goldenberg, 2003; Ryan & Deci, 2000) and hope (Bernardo, 2010; Snyder, …

B-2 Serving Leadership Style Revisited, Petr Cincala, Paul Cho

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

This presentation highlights findings from a study exploring the congregational health and church growth of more than 9,000 congregations from various denominations across United States. These congregations have used a Natural Church Development (NCD) survey to obtain a health assessment over the period of last 10 years. Findings reveal a fascinating pattern of church growth and health that is related to leadership style of the pastor. The data show that the churches whose pastors say their style of leadership is "serving" are actually growing less and have lower health scores than those who do not list their leadership style as …

A-2 Intimate Partner Violence And Substance Abuse: Male And Female Perpetrators, Christiana D. Atkins Nov 2017

A-2 Intimate Partner Violence And Substance Abuse: Male And Female Perpetrators, Christiana D. Atkins

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Domestic violence has been a pervasive, long-standing problem in our society, likely for as long as society has been around. In the United States, it wasn’t until 1871 that the first state (Alabama) rescinded the “husbandly” right to physically punish their wives. Societal views on relationship violence have since changed significantly. Male perpetrators of intimate partner violence have been the focus of studies since the 1970’s when domestic violence started gaining attention in literature and in popular culture. Contrary to popular belief, females have been found to be more likely to initiate violence. Female intimate partner violence perpetration rates have …

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

This paper presents an overview of the concept of children’s participation from a human rights perspective, using the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child as framework. It emphasizes the importance of children’s active participation in decisions and actions that relate to their advancement and that of their community. Drawing on examples primarily from Haiti, the paper proposes three basic rationales for children’s participation: 1) historically, they are key actors of social and political changes; 2) their participation enhances order and stability; and 3) their participation enhances provision and protection rights. As right-holders, children should not be treated …

C-1 Truth About The Seven Trumpets, Kyung Ran Yang Nov 2017

C-1 Truth About The Seven Trumpets, Kyung Ran Yang

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

If the major event of Christ entering the final phase of His ministration in 1844 was misinterpreted as His Second Coming, should we not reconsider the interpretation of the Seven Trumpets also? The question about the accuracy and relevance of the historical interpretation has to be reassessed because the Seven Trumpets message is housed by the ministry of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary.

In believing the historical account, we almost lost Jesus. What I mean by this is that in this flawed explanation that God is judging the nations that are oppressing His church, our focus is taken away from …
