The Matrimonial Culture In Cairo's Upper Middle Class: Capital, Collective And Consumption, Mariam Al-Mokadem

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on discourses and practices relating to the journey to matrimony in Cairo's upper middle class. In other words, I will focus on how members of this social class communicate and perform their beliefs about matrimony. It is a journey to matrimony in Cairo's upper-middle class, with reference to the temporalities a bride undergoes in order to actualize the new ordinary of marriage through suitor selection, matrimonial practices, and consumption patterns. Law, Love And Violence: Interfaith Romance In Modern Egypt, Mariam El-Maghlawy Feb 2019

Law, Love And Violence: Interfaith Romance In Modern Egypt, Mariam El-Maghlawy

Theses and Dissertations

For the past few decades, many incidents of sectarian violence have been triggered by rumors of interfaith sexual and romantic relationships between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Egypt. This thesis argues that the ways in which the Egyptian modern state chooses to govern women’s bodies and address the Coptic question has inevitably enabled sectarian violence witnessed today to take on its current form. Wife Battering In Egypt : Breaking The Walls Of Silence, Mehrinaz Aly El Awady

Archived Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT Research is usually presented as unemotional and rational, as about bringing an unemotional stance to the object under examination. However, doing research on wife battering and being in direct contact with abused wives and abusers is a different experience. At the beginning I was wonied that the research would not be completed, due to the sensitivity of the topic of battered women, but also due more to the men involved. I was afraid of men's responses, and their refusal or willingness to cooperate and complete the interview. Nevertheless, after selection of the cases, I became more involved with them, …
