Throughout DoD, chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), a type of Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL), have been frequently used. In the subsurface, spilled DNAPLs may pool atop low permeability clay layers. In this study a numerical model is constructed using the Groundwater Modeling System to assess how cracks in the clay, either pre-existing or the result of DNAPL-clay interactions, might impact a dissolved CAH plume generated by the DNAPL source. The conceptual model posits a DNAPL source in a high permeability sand aquifer sitting atop a low permeability clay layer. The model assumes dissolved CAH generated by the DNAPL is transported …

Chlorinated hydrocarbons and their degradation products are among of the most common organic groundwater contaminates in the United States. These compounds attack the central nervous system in animals and can affect the photosynthesis of plants. These compounds are also resistant to degradation in the environment and, because of this, pose a risk to any ecosystem in which they are present. This study identified the dominant microbial species in a constructed treatment wetland at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), and trichloroethane (TCA) are probable human carcinogens that have been used widely within the DoD, primarily as solvents for cleaning and metal degreasing. These compounds are frequently found to be groundwater contaminants. In fact, TCE and PCE are the first and third most commonly detected groundwater contaminants nationwide. The focus of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using a palladium (Pd) catalyst with formate as a reductant to treat CAH-contaminated groundwater. TCE was used as a model CAH. Past research has shown that there is a rising public concern with environmental issues in the Republic of Korea (ROK). As Korean government and public interest in the environment grow, there is likely to be increased pressure to remediate environmental contamination at United States Department of Defense (DoD) installations in Korea. Impacting DoD's ability to remediate contaminated sites overseas is the fact that limited environmental funds must compete with high priority mission requirements.
