This investigation into the Johannine pericopes in Greek lectionary /11 72 seeks to discover the textual character of twenty-four pericopes, with reference to five text-types, and to provide answers to three questions: (1) Do any of the Johannine pericopes in l1172 show affinity with an identifiable Caesarean text-type? (2) Is there a connecting link between the Caesarean and Byzantine text-types? (3) What part does the lectionary play in this connection?

Of the 5,487 manuscripts known today, fewer than half have been studied, yet curiously most have been assigned a text-type. The Byzantine minuscules are among the majority of these manuscripts which have been assigned a text-type even though they have not been studied. Hort's negative assessment of the Byzantine manusrcipts and their neglect by scholars such as Comfort, and K. Aland have caused them to be disregarded. However, until there is proof to the contrary, the Byzantine minuscules should play a meaningful role in the textual criticism of the Greek New Testament.
