Bullying At The Fire Station? Perceptions Based On Gender, Race And Sexual Orientation, John C. Griffith, Donna L. Roberts, Ronald T. Wakeham

Donna L. Roberts

Discrimination and strained co-worker relationships based on gender, race or sexual orientation are forms of bullying in the workplace. This research examines firefighter perceptions with regard to bullying as defined above. Survey questions were based on the National Report Card on Women and Firefighting study (Hulett, Bendick, Thomas & Miccio, 2008). The web-based survey was distributed through the National Fire Academy Training, Resources and Data Exchange Network, (TRADENET). Findings from 113 completed surveys indicated that most firefighters did not perceive bullying issues were pervasive in the fire service. However there were large differences in perception between female and male firefighters. …

Overachievers, Procrastinators, And Failed Googling: Exploring Why Students Ask Librarians For Assistance, Jaimie Beth Colvin, Marc Vinyard, Colleen Mullally

According to national trends on reference statistics from ARL, reference questions are declining. At our university, however, reference statistics are on the rise. While this is great news, we don’t know why it's happening.  We wish that we could attribute this good fortune to our approachable posture and wonderful instruction sessions ... we’re the sirens of the library luring nearby students to our reference desk with our enchanting smiles, but instead of meeting disaster, students find information.

We aren’t mythical creatures, though. We’re just librarians who really want to know the answer to a crucial question: why do our …

Scholarly Publishing Resources: Cutting Edge Technology To Assist Faculty With Bibliometric Data And Scholarly Publishing, Marc Vinyard, Jaimie Beth Colvin

Jaimie Beth Colvin

Pepperdine librarians created a comprehensive guide on publishing resources in response to questions we have received over the year from professors on topics such as the best journals to publish in, the prestige of journals, and how often their articles are cited. By creating this guide, we increased our knowledge of bibliometrics, which involves measuring the influence of scholarly research based on how often articles, books and journals are cited by other researchers. We have increased faculty engagement with the library because professors are interested in resources that assist them with the publishing and ultimately their success as scholars. Pepperdine …

Democracy, according to a large body of research, contributes to human development by improving citizens' lives (Prezeworkski et al. 2000; Gerrign et al. 2012; McGuire 2010; Baum and Lake 2003; Gerring et al. 2015). Broad evidence demonstrates that democracies provide higher standards of living, on average, for their citizens than authoritarian countries (Boix 2001; Brown and Hunter 2004; Brown and Mobarak 2009; Besley and Kudamatsu 2006; Lake and Baum 2001). But what is it about democratic practice that enhances the quality of its citizens' lives? Proponents argue that democratic practices such as competitive elections, checks and balances, and protection of …

Party Autonomy And Consumer Arbitration In Conflict: A “Trojan Horse” In The Access To Justice In The E.U. Adr-Directive 2013/11?, Norbert Reich

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs

Arbitration clauses in consumer contracts have been subject to controversy in many jurisdictions; recent U.S. and Canadian Supreme Court case law have been used as examples. European Union (E.U.) law, which originally excluded arbitration in general from the Brussels/Rome regimes, has recently taken a mixed, and to some extent limited, approach by including Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) entities “imposing” a solution in its recent ADR Directive 2013/11. There seems to be an indirect encouragement to develop consumer arbitration schemes in E.U. Member States as a second route to justice. It is too early to evaluate this new and somewhat clandestine …

Lessons And Best Practices For Designers Of Fast Track, Low Value, High Volume Global E-Commerce Odr Systems, Louis F. Del Duca, Colin Rule, Brian Cressman

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs

The momentum behind development of global online fast track low value high volume dispute resolution (hereafter ODR) continues to accelerate. Consumer and business groups around the world are promoting fair, proportionate, effective, online, fast track redress for low value high volume cross border e-commerce disputes. As a result, there will continue to be increasing demand for a variety of effective ODR systems design and procedural rules. Best practices developed by entities like eBay and lessons learned from the work of UNCITRAL Working Group III can be helpful in developing framework models for fast track low value high volume e-commerce ODR …

Rapamycin Rescues Vascular, Metabolic And Learning Deficits In Apolipoprotein E4 Transgenic Mice With Pre-Symptomatic Alzheimer’S Disease, Ai-Ling Lin, Jordan B. Jahrling, Wei Zhang, Nicholas Derosa, Vikas Bakshi, Peter Romero, Veronica Galvan, Arlan Richardson Dec 2015

Rapamycin Rescues Vascular, Metabolic And Learning Deficits In Apolipoprotein E4 Transgenic Mice With Pre-Symptomatic Alzheimer’S Disease, Ai-Ling Lin, Jordan B. Jahrling, Wei Zhang, Nicholas Derosa, Vikas Bakshi, Peter Romero, Veronica Galvan, Arlan Richardson

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 allele is a common susceptibility gene for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Brain vascular and metabolic deficits can occur in cognitively normal apolipoprotein E ɛ4 carriers decades before the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The goal of this study was to determine whether early intervention using rapamycin could restore neurovascular and neurometabolic functions, and thus impede pathological progression of Alzheimer's disease-like symptoms in pre-symptomatic Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 transgenic mice. Using in vivo, multimodal neuroimaging, we found that apolipoprotein E ɛ4 mice treated with rapamycin had restored cerebral blood flow, blood–brain barrier integrity and glucose metabolism, compared …
