Of Pillars And Foundations: Seven Thesis Statements Concerning The Hermeneutics Of The Pentateuch, Gerald A. Klingbeil May 2020

Of Pillars And Foundations: Seven Thesis Statements Concerning The Hermeneutics Of The Pentateuch, Gerald A. Klingbeil

Faculty Publications

The study of the composition of the Pentateuch has been at the center of critical scholarship since the nineteenth century. While there is general agreement that the Graf-Wellhausen documentary hypothesis, as originally presented, is untenable, most of current Pentateuchal research has worked within the framework of the existence of divergent sources that underwent a number of editorial changes. Considering the basic physical law of input determining output, this study challenges the basic presupposition of the existence of divergent sources and calls for a fresh approach to the hermeneutics of the Pentateuch that approaches the biblical text on its own terms …

How To Encourage Volunteers In The Church, S. Joseph Kidder

Faculty Publications

In the previous two articles, we dealt with how to recruit and train volunteers. The success of your church’s mission depends on people who follow Jesus and are passionate about His mission in the church and in the world. Now that you’ve recruited leaders for your ministry, the best part begins: encouraging them and building relationships with them to help them grow in their faith and spiritual gifts.

Toward A Systematic Theology Of The Sanctuary: Part 2, John C. Peckham Mar 2020

Toward A Systematic Theology Of The Sanctuary: Part 2, John C. Peckham

Faculty Publications

This article is part two of an essay that offers some preliminary thoughts regarding the relationship of the sanctuary and systematic theology, focusing on just a few aspects which expose the relationship between the two. The first article considered the nature of theological systems, issues related to an Adventist system of theology, and the relationship between fundamental theology and the sanctuary in particular, with attention to some broad, competing views of the sanctuary that are integrally related to the way one conceives of broader theological principles. The first article set the stage for this second article, which concludes the essay …

Professionals: Any Room In God’S Ministry?, Andrew C. Von Maur Mar 2020

Professionals: Any Room In God’S Ministry?, Andrew C. Von Maur

Faculty Publications

As Christian professionals, the activity of architects is steeped in technicalities. They are expected to work a lot of hours; leaving them no extra time for actual “ministry.” In such an environment, with hardly enough time for family or personal Bible study, can they possibly be missionaries? “Yes, we can,” says a professional in this field.

How Children Experience Grief, Natalie Dorland, S. Joseph Kidder

Faculty Publications

Children grieve internally just as much as adults, and they are far less equipped to handle their emotions. Children desperately need pastors and church members to pay attention to them and minister to their needs in times of grief. How do we effectively do that, especially depending on their age group?

Sharing The Gospel In A Postmodern World: Challenges And Opportunities, Felix H. Cortez Jan 2020

Sharing The Gospel In A Postmodern World: Challenges And Opportunities, Felix H. Cortez

Faculty Publications

Humility is the prerequisite to a significant dialogue in a postmodern context. It has the ability to transform the dialogue from a debate between opposing parties into a party of fellow travelers in the search for meaning. The truths we find and share in that common endeavor will not be suspect as biased assertions to the benefit of power groups under the cloak of truth, but embraced as common solutions to the problems we face.

The Doctrine Of The Final Disposition Of The Wicked In The Writings Of The Reformers, Trevor O'Reggio Jan 2020

The Doctrine Of The Final Disposition Of The Wicked In The Writings Of The Reformers, Trevor O'Reggio

Faculty Publications

The range and scope of this paper do not cover the historical development of these three main ideas of hell but focuses narrowly on the views of the major Protestant Reformers concerning hell. The majority of the Protestant reformers agreed with the traditional view on hell. I will use a representative group of Reformers from the four major Protestant traditions to illustrate this position.

Holy Spirit, Trevor O'Reggio Jan 2020

Holy Spirit, Trevor O'Reggio

Faculty Publications

The Radical Reformers were not a unified entity, but consisted of many disparate voices, so their theology reflected these differences. The purpose of this paper is to explore their views concerning the Holy Spirit. But even among the differences on this subject, they did shared more things in common than differences. They all agreed on the basic teaching of the nature, personality and role of the Holy Spirit, and the indispensable role of the Spirit in all areas of the Christian life. Their differences perhaps lie in the degree to which believers must be reliant on the Spirit.

The Inseparable Duo: The Holy Spirit And Preaching, Rodney A. Palmer Jan 2020

The Inseparable Duo: The Holy Spirit And Preaching, Rodney A. Palmer

Faculty Publications

The power of the Holy Spirit is indispensable when crafting and delivering effective sermons. To downplay His role in preaching creates a false dichotomy between the discipline of homiletics and the doctrine of pneumatology. The Holy Spirit plays seven important roles in the life of the preacher, the preparation of a sermon, the preaching moment, and the lives of listeners.

Religious Belief And Culture: The Curious Case Of The Intuitive Soul, Karl G. D. Bailey, Duane C. Mcbride

While Adventists recognize some of the straightforward and concrete ideas that are part of doctrinal training on human nature and the state of the dead, the core intuitive belief in mind-body dualism likely continues to influence how Adventists understand human nature.
