Predicting Self-Esteem And Depressive Symptoms From Social Skills In Youth With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emma Wilkinson Dec 2021

Predicting Self-Esteem And Depressive Symptoms From Social Skills In Youth With And Without Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emma Wilkinson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at increased risk for low self-esteem and depressive symptomatology. Poor social skills may be associated with depression and self-esteem in ASD populations, yet these relationships remain understudied. Previous studies are limited by lack of comparison between youth and parent report of social skills and lack of comparisons to clinically relevant samples. This study seeks to compare predictive relationships between parent and youth-reported social skills, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms across youth with ASD and youth with similar clinical vulnerabilities. Hierarchal regression analyses revealed that youth-reported social skills account for significant variance in self-esteem, parent-reported …

Female College Students' Experiences With Coercive Control : A Qualitative Investigation, Larissa Barbaro-Kukade Jan 2019

Female College Students' Experiences With Coercive Control : A Qualitative Investigation, Larissa Barbaro-Kukade

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The current qualitative study was designed to provide a phenomenological understanding of how coercive control in a romantic relationship is experienced by college women, whose experiences have not been studied. Previous surveys of intimate partner violence (IPV) on college campuses as well as in the community have assessed prevalence rates and types of abuse (e.g. ACHA, 2015; Black et al., 2011; Buhi et al., 2009; Fass et al., 2008; Straus, 2008; Straus & Gozjolko, 2014), rather than survivors’ lived experience of the relationship. To extend this literature, the present study focused on coercive control, a cycle of psychological tactics including …

Cumulative Risk And Chinese Adolescent Problematic Internet Use : The Mediating Role Of Self-Esteem, Xian Li

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A decade of research has documented the adverse effect of multiple ecological risks on adolescent problematic Internet use (PIU), yet existing research provides rather segmental explanations, and few studies offer a comprehensive and integrated account. A better theoretical and empirical understanding of the associations of multiple ecological risks and PIU, as well as the underlying mechanisms, could help inform intervention practices and policies to mitigate adolescent PIU.

An Empirical Examination Of The Causal Reasoning Perspective Of Counterproductive Work Behavior, Choe Shannon Jan 2015

An Empirical Examination Of The Causal Reasoning Perspective Of Counterproductive Work Behavior, Choe Shannon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study used the causal reasoning perspective of counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) developed by Martinko, Gundlach and Douglas (2002) to evaluate the role of narcissism and low self-esteem in relation to interpersonal injustice. Narcissism and low self-esteem were proposed to relate to distinct attributional and emotional reactions following interpersonal injustice, stemming from different approach-avoidance motivational tendencies. These different tendencies, in turn, were proposed to relate to certain forms of CWB, as categorized within an approach-avoidance framework. Path analyses revealed that neither narcissism nor low self-esteem significantly related to CWB and that CWB could not be reliably categorized within an approach-avoidance …

Self-Esteem, Self-Compassion, Defensive Self-Esteem, And Related Features Of Narcissism As Predictors Of Aggression, Cara Pharr Gottheim Jan 2009

Self-Esteem, Self-Compassion, Defensive Self-Esteem, And Related Features Of Narcissism As Predictors Of Aggression, Cara Pharr Gottheim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study sought to expand upon existing literature pertaining to feelings toward oneself and aggressive behavior. Specifically, global self-esteem, as well as two specific subsets of self-esteem, defensive self-esteem and narcissistic self-esteem, were examined as predictors of aggressive behavior. Additionally, the relationship between aggression and self-compassion, a recently introduced self-construct moderately correlated with self-esteem, was investigated. College students from a large Northeastern University were invited via email or through a brief classroom presentation to participate in this online study. A total of 181 students completed five surveys that were useable for data analyses: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES; Rosenberg, 1989), Self-compassion …
