Teacher Mindfulness Competencies In The K-12 School Setting, Jessica Frances Janze Aug 2022

Teacher Mindfulness Competencies In The K-12 School Setting, Jessica Frances Janze

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Mental health symptomology in childhood and adolescence can lead to long-term negative health outcomes. Mindfulness has demonstrated lasting effects on increasing resiliency and preventing mental health relapse. Mindfulness programs for youth have begun the adaptation process into school settings. Little is known regarding best-practice for mindfulness-based programs (MBPs) in this novel environment. The current study examines the effect of mindfulness levels and teachers’ foundational competencies on K-12 teachers’ mindfulness competencies. Group level and individual teacher data are presented and provide a preliminary basis for further investigation. Suggestions for future research in this area are discussed.

Racism And Anxiety In A Black American Sample: The Role Of Mediators And A Brief Mindfulness Manipulation, Jessica Rose Graham Dec 2013

Racism And Anxiety In A Black American Sample: The Role Of Mediators And A Brief Mindfulness Manipulation, Jessica Rose Graham

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

It is important to determine factors that may exacerbate the negative effects of experiences of racism on anxiety, as well as factors that might buffer racism's negative impact on anxiety in Black American samples. To examine these factors, we conducted two related studies. In study 1, 119 Black American individuals completed the Schedule of Racist Events, the five factor mindfulness questionnaire, the anxiety control questionnaire (assessing perceptions of control), the self-hatred subscale of the cross racial identity scale, and the depression anxiety and stress Scale. As hypothesized, frequency of racist experiences over the past week was significantly positively associated with …

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Exposure And Extinction Processes In Social Anxiety, Michael Treanor Jun 2012

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Exposure And Extinction Processes In Social Anxiety, Michael Treanor

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The present study sought to examine the potential impact of brief mindfulness inductions to enhance exposure and extinction processes in social anxiety. Mindfulness may enhance extinction through increased awareness of multiple conditioned excitors (thereby "overpredicting" the occurrence of an aversive outcome) or by acting as a retrieval cue to mitigate return of fear. Twenty-two participants high in social anxiety were recruited to participate in a series of massed exposures. Latent growth curve analyses revealed that participants who received mindfulness inductions prior to exposure procedures demonstrated enhanced extinction learning as measured by expectancy ratings, but not when measured by distress, state …
