Over time, researchers have struggled to identify effective interventions to support girls’ self-efficacy and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The primary purpose of this study was to examine whether a theoretically-grounded narrative-based intervention would be able to increase elementary school-aged girls’ self-efficacy in respect to future careers and interest in STEM subjects in school. Although effective treatments have been developed for various mental illnesses, many individuals who need psychological help do not seek it because of stigma. Interventions have been developed to reduce stigma, with the hope of increasing access to mental healthcare. This toolkit was created to help shed light on the impact a stressful high school environment can have on today’s youth, and provide teachers, students, and parents with up-to-date information on what resources are available within the county of Marin. When working with adolescents, it is important to consider environmental threats to their mental health (i.e., lack of sleep) in order to make proper referrals and treatment plans. A study done by Kelley, Lockley, Kelley, & Evans (2017) implemented a 10:00 a.m. start time at an urban school in England. By delaying school start times, Kelley et al., found that absences related to illness were reduced by 50 percent compared to national rates. In general, school systems in the United States are not currently structured to ensure students can function at their maximum potential, and their academics, health, and relationships are deteriorating as a result. More importantly, suicide is becoming more prevalent in high schools within the United States, which means prevention programs need to be reevaluated or implemented to help Marin youth cope with academic and social stress. This guide will provide the community with psychoeducation on depression and anxiety; potential risk factors, how to help, and what treatment options are available.

In 2015, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published a National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) on obesity from 2011 through 2014. Hoarding disorder (HD) is a mental health condition characterized by difficulty letting go of possessions, resulting in clutter that prevents use of active living spaces. Consequences associated with hoarding include strained family relationships, distress for children in the home, and increased burden on social services. Currently, the most empirically supported treatment for HD is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which includes such components as education about the nature of hoarding, challenging unhelpful thoughts, and exposure to distressing stimuli. The amount of food wasted is a topic of societal and academic interest. As academic research in this area is nascent, there are significant knowledge gaps, which this dissertation seeks to narrow, pertaining to: (1) the measurement of food waste; (2) the human behaviors that lead to wasting of food; and (3) the development of efficacious food waste reduction interventions.

Disruptive behavior in children is the most common reason for seeking mental health services (Keenan & Wakschlag, 2000; Robins, 1991) and often carries over into the child’s academic environment. Teacher beliefs and behavior can ameliorate or exacerbate behavioral problems in the classroom (Buyse, Verschueren, Doumen, Van Damme, & Maes, 2007; Hamre & Pianta, 2001). Teacher education in childhood behavioral disorders and classroom management varies widely (Arcia, Frank, Sanchez-LaCay & Fernandez, 2000), as state and program requirements differ (Freeman, Simonsen, Briere, & MacSuga-Gage, 2014). Increasing teachers’ knowledge of behavior disorders has been shown to increase teacher self-efficacy, and lead to attributions for behavior problems to a child’s disorder, rather than the child’s disposition, which increases the number of positive interventions utilized in the classroom (Andreou & Rapti, 2010; Jones & Chronis-Tuscano, 2008; Poulou & Norwich, 2002). Although there are many validated teacher training programs that provide instruction in positive interventions and education about behavioral problems, they tend to be expensive and time consuming. The present study examined the effects of tootling on students’ disruptive and academically engaged behavior in three general education high school classrooms.
