Techniques based on artificial neural networks represent the current state-of-the-art in machine learning due to the availability of improved hardware and large data sets. Here we employ doc2vec, an unsupervised neural network, to capture the semantic content of text messages sent by adolescents during high school, and encode this semantic content as numeric vectors. These vectors effectively condense the text message data into highly leverageable inputs to a logistic regression classifier in a matter of hours, as compared to the tedious and often quite lengthy task of manually coding data. Internalizing and externalizing problems impact functioning and health in adolescence. Therefore, understanding risk and protective factors related to these behaviors is of practical interest. The proposed study examined the relationship between parent-adolescent attachment security, self-regulation capacity, and internalizing and externalizing problems. Previous studies have supported prospective links between parent-child attachment security and self-regulation capacities. Similarly, self-regulation is as a protective factor from internalizing and externalizing problems. This study proposed a mediation model combining these findings. The primary aim of this study was to investigate gender differences in problem content and dyadic problem talk duration as potential contributors to previously documented depressogenic effects of co-rumination in late adolescence. The majority of youth will report traumatic event exposure by the time they reach adulthood. Research suggests exposure to such events is linked to myriad negative outcomes. Not all traumatic events are alike, however; evidence suggests that, compared to non-interpersonal events, interpersonal events in which another person intentionally perpetrates harm are linked to elevations in the likelihood of negative outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study investigated the impact of ZGiRLS, a sport-based youth development program (YDP) that seeks to empower adolescent girls by teaching psychological skills. Sport-based YDPs have shown great potential for promoting healthy psychological development (Anderson-Butcher et al., 2013), and may even serve a preventative function by providing an effective setting for developing positive traits, attitudes, and skills (Weissberg, Kumpfer, & Seligman, 2003). The purpose of this study was to conduct a program evaluation to explore the effectiveness of ZGiRLS. Four specific aims of the study were to examine (a) a change in psychological skills (i.e., self-talk and goal setting), (b) a change in cognitive emotion regulation, (c) a change in negative and positive mental health outcomes (i.e., depression, anxiety, self-esteem, resilience), and (d) cognitive emotion regulation as a mediator in the relationship between psychological skills and mental health outcomes.

Participants were 107 adolescent girls (Mean age = 12.35; SD = 1.41), enrolled in an 8-session curriculum program. Adolescents benefit from relationships with meaningful adult mentors in many ways (DuBois & Silverthorn, 2005). The quality of mentoring relationships is an essential mediating factor (Pryce & Keller, 2012). Particular relationship activities may influence the relationship’s success (DuBois & Silverthorn, 2005). However, few studies have considered the role of Christian faith in the relationship and outcomes of mentoring (Lanker & Issler, 2010).

The current study sought to identify effective characteristics of naturally occurring youth relationships with Christian adult mentors. It examined differences in life adjustment between adolescents with and without Christian mentors, the role of the mentoring relationship quality in predicting those differences, and the moderating role of various relational activities.

Participants included 166 adolescents aged 13-18 in grades 9-12 attending a private Christian school and an evangelical church. The presence and importance of mentors was determined through a series of questions (Greenberger, Chen, & Beam, 1998). Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (“Screening and case finding,” 2015); life satisfaction was measured using the Life Satisfaction Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985); and religious commitment was evaluated using a single-item question (Gorsuch & McPherson, 1989). Relationship quality was appraised using the Experiences in Close Relationships - Relationship Structures Questionnaire (Fraley, Heffernan, Vicary, & Brumbaugh, 2011). Mentoring relationship activities were assessed with an 11-item self-report measure developed for this study. Data were analyzed using independent sample t-tests, Pearson’s r, and multiple linear regression.

Students with mentors were significantly less depressed, more satisfied, and more committed to their faith than students without mentors. Mentoring relationship quality was correlated negatively with mentee depression, and positively with life satisfaction and religious commitment. Relationships were moderated by the importance mentees placed on having fun with their mentors, jointly engaging in a meaningful, broader social context, studying the Bible or related books together, praying together, having meaningful conversations, and technologybased communication, as well as duration of the mentoring relationship. Results generally complement those of Lanker (2012; Lanker & Issler, 2010); positive adolescent adjustment is associated with Christian adults coming alongside youth to develop secure, supportive, and longterm relationships marked by certain important activities.

The present research aimed to improve measurement of one form of childhood adversity (maltreatment) and explore the role of adversity in one developmental process (goal setting and appraisals) through which it may impact outcomes. The current study examined gender-based harassment in early adolescence and the characteristics of individuals who perpetrate such harassment (specifically, experiences with witnessing gender-based harassment and gender identity). Adolescence is a vulnerable developmental period in regards to drug initiation and use. The gateway hypothesis suggests that adolescent cigarette smoking may result in a heightened risk for methamphetamine use. However, little is understood about the role of nicotine on adolescent methamphetamine addiction. The aim of the present study was to determine whether early, late, or continuous adolescent nicotine exposure would alter oral methamphetamine self-administration, extinction, or reinstatement. Parental cancer has a strong influence on the psychological well-being of children at all ages. Children and adolescents whose parents have more distress and advanced disease tend to have lower rates of healthy psychological adjustment. The objective of this study was to examine an in-school rap narrative workshop through critical discourse theory (Bamberg, 2012; Daiute, 2014). Twelve youth from a public school serving youth in urban Houston, TX were recruited from an in-school and after-school Hip hop/Rap narrative program to participate in a two-year cohort research study. This exploratory study employed qualitative methodology, specifically values analysis, to learn more about how being involved within Hip hop dance communities positively relates to adolescent development. Adolescence was defined herein as ages 13-23.
