The Effect Of Multiple Electroconvulsive Shocks Upon Rotational Activity In Rats, Thomas Lee Hall Dec 1978

The Effect Of Multiple Electroconvulsive Shocks Upon Rotational Activity In Rats, Thomas Lee Hall

Psychology ETDs

Multiple ECS treatments were administered to rats in order to assess the effects of electroshock upon rotational behavior. Since CA systems have a demonstrated role in the determination of rotational activity, alterations in behavioral asymmetry would suggest underlying changes in the intrinsic asymmetry of CA projections. If ECS, in turn, were to alter CA function, then one would expect ECS to also alter rotational asymmetry. In order to test this hypothesis, animals were given ECS daily for eight consecutive days. Measures of amphetamine-induced rotational activity were obtained from each animal prior to the first shock treatment and forty-eight hours following …

The Effects Of Anticipated Evaluation On Individual Brainstorming Performance, Barbara Kane Maginn Dec 1978

The Effects Of Anticipated Evaluation On Individual Brainstorming Performance, Barbara Kane Maginn

Psychology ETDs

Experimental investigations of the relative effectiveness of group versus individual brainstorming procedures have consistently reported the finding of individual brainstorming superiority. Several hypotheses concerning the nature of the inhibitory factor or factors operating in the group situation have been postulated. One which has been mentioned frequently involves postulation of the presence of anticipated evaluation in brainstorming groups. That is, it has been hypothesized that group members may believe that other members will evaluate critically ideas which they produce. As a result, freewheeling production of ideas may be suppressed in the group context. The present study manipulated different conditions of anticipated …

The Motivation Of Self-Investment, Dan Nunley Dec 1978

The Motivation Of Self-Investment, Dan Nunley

Student Dissertations & Theses

A game of chance void of feedback was played by 36 adults to determine the motivational properties of various degrees of self-investment. The levels of self-investment were created by altering the extent to which subjects were involved in making one of the symbols used in the game. A practice trial was used to establish each subjects base score and a final trial to determine behavior changes induced by self-investment. The gains between trials yielded significant results (p<.01) due to subject participation in the experimental process.

A Descriptive Study Of Parish Clergy And Their Counseling Practices, Gregory J. Ludlow Dec 1978

A Descriptive Study Of Parish Clergy And Their Counseling Practices, Gregory J. Ludlow

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

It has been the function of societies throughout history to provide comfort and support for it's troubled members. In the past, this function was performed by the society's religious institutions.Today, as in the past, people who want solutions.to the problems they experience, or who want to gain pathways to possible solutions, look to their religion, their church organization, their clergyman, to their God. The clergymen of a community are apt to be the first professionals of that community to be consulted when the need for help is felt.

Pharmacological Effects On Aggression And Manual Responding Generated By Tail Shock In The Squirrel Monkey, Grace S. Emley Dec 1978

Pharmacological Effects On Aggression And Manual Responding Generated By Tail Shock In The Squirrel Monkey, Grace S. Emley

Dissertations

The response-independent, fixed-time delivery of electric tail shock in the squirrel monkey generated bites on a rubber hose immediately following shock delivery and manual responses on a lever immediately preceding shock. The procedure generated two temporally and topographically different responses in the single organism in a single experimental session. All responses were measured objectively via response manipulanda and recorded on cumulative recorders and counters. Nine pharmacological compounds were administered to the squirrel monkey after a stable baseline of bite and lever press responding had been established. Three stimulant compounds - d-amphetamine, caffeine, cocaine; three tranquilizer compounds - nicotine, chlordiazepoxide, chlorpromazine; …

Effects Of Labels On Recognition Memory For Ambiguous Visual Forms, Marvin Charles Mccallum Dec 1978

Effects Of Labels On Recognition Memory For Ambiguous Visual Forms, Marvin Charles Mccallum

Psychology ETDs

Memory for visual forms can be assessed in two separate ways. The most common approach is to assess the degree to which a form is accurately remembered. A less common approach is to assess the type and degree of change in form memory. The present experiment investigated the role of a single suggestive label in affecting both accuracy and qualitative change of recognition memory for ambiguous visual forms. Each of 240 subjects was briefly shown a single ambiguous form which represented the geometrical average of the anatomical characteristics of the two animal forms used to construct it. Just prior to …

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb Dec 1978

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine maternal and paternal perceptions of the neonate. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure perception.

Thirty couples who delivered normal, healthy, first-born infants at a Naval Hospital in San Diego volunteered for the study. Consent forms were signed during the hospital stay and the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was administered to both parents in the homes when the infants were one month old.

Statistical analysis of data showed that mothers and fathers did rate their one-month-old infants as above the average infant using the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory. The range …

The Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy On Fantasy And Aggression In Male Social Drinkers, Michael R. Rodriguez Nov 1978

The Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy On Fantasy And Aggression In Male Social Drinkers, Michael R. Rodriguez

Psychology ETDs

Research has indicated a complex relationship between alcohol and aggression involving personality as well as situational variables. Recently it has been found that expectancy of receiving alcohol has a more potent effect (on many behavioral measures including aggression) than does actual receipt of alcohol. In addition, alcohol has been found to increase power fantasies in males, leading many researchers to associate power fantasies with powerful actions such as aggression. The present study examined the effects of alcohol and expectancy upon aggression and power fantasies in male social drinkers. In the first phase of the study, 30 male college students over …

The Differential Effect Of Cognitive Style On Memory, Lee Tilford Davis Nov 1978

The Differential Effect Of Cognitive Style On Memory, Lee Tilford Davis

Psychology ETDs

Researchers and theoreticians have long assumed differences to exist in the attentional and learning processes between hysterical and obsessive-compulsive style individuals. This assumption of differences between the two cognitive styles has engendered limited research. Further, this research has utilized only the type of tasks employed in learning and memory experiments. The present study attempted to assess differences in the memories of hysterical and obsessive style individuals, moving from memory for word lists as assessed in previous research, to memory for information more typically utilized in a clinical situation.

Hysterical (Hy) and obsessive-compulsive (Pt) style subjects were obtained through the administration …

Effects Of Cognition Training On Locus Of Control (Lc), Weight Reduction, And Problem Solving Ability, Lisa Buckmaster Oct 1978

Effects Of Cognition Training On Locus Of Control (Lc), Weight Reduction, And Problem Solving Ability, Lisa Buckmaster

Dissertations and Theses

Weight control is an area of research which continues to generate attention in an endeavor to find the most effective and long lasting weight loss methods. In the realm of the behavioral modification of weight control, emphasis has been given to the impact of external stimuli on eating behavior. Less well researched are internal stimuli, that is, cognitive events, feelings, and thoughts which influence eating habits. The literature on obesity has yet to empirically differentiate the effects of the cognitive and external factors on weight control. A cognitive restructuring approach to weight reduction was hypothesized to be the more effective …

How We Judge Others: The Attribution Of Responsibility, Brad B. Richardson Aug 1978

How We Judge Others: The Attribution Of Responsibility, Brad B. Richardson

Student Work

Attribution theory is concerned with the process by which people infer causation from "parts of the relatively stable environment" (Heider, 1958:297). This process is a function of the need to. control the environment through explanation and prediction similar to the way scientists attempt descriptions that render predictions. This analogy has also been drawn by Kelley (1967), who has concluded that the way in which causal attributions are made is similar to the way data is analysed by means of the analysis of variance procedure. Another example of the parallel between the scientific method and attribution processes has been made by …

Attribution Of Responsibility For An Accident As A Function Of Outcome Severity, Deservability, And Locus Of Control, William H. Adams Aug 1978

Attribution Of Responsibility For An Accident As A Function Of Outcome Severity, Deservability, And Locus Of Control, William H. Adams

Student Work

One hundred male and female undergraduate students served as mock jurors. Subjects read four automobile accident summaries. For each case, subjects judged the defendant's responsibility, the plaintiff 's responsebility, and evaluated the severity of consequences. In each case, the deservingness of the victim to suffer, and the severity of the accidental consequences were varied. In addition, a median split was done on subjects' locus of control scores to define a third treatment variable. Therefore, the study was a 2 (Internal vs. External) x 2 (High Severity vs. Low Severity) x 2 (High Deservingness vs. Low Deservingness) mixed factorial design. Results …

Person Perception In The Job Interview : The Effect Of Congruent & Incongruent Information Between The Job Interview And Letter Of Reference, Sharen Dale Enscore Aug 1978

Person Perception In The Job Interview : The Effect Of Congruent & Incongruent Information Between The Job Interview And Letter Of Reference, Sharen Dale Enscore

Master's Theses

The following research examined the differences in two modes of presentation within the employee interview situation; the letter of reference and the job interview. Past research has failed to examine these two modes presented in succession to the same subjects to ascertain the more salient mode. In the present research this was detennined by pairing a letter of reference with an incongruent job interview to see which mode has the greater influence on the decision to hire. Information on a woman applicant was presented to 40 male and 40 female college business students via these two modes. Main effects were …

Reading Ability And Visual And Auditory Incidental Learning In Learning Disabled Adolescents, Brenda G. Miller Aug 1978

Reading Ability And Visual And Auditory Incidental Learning In Learning Disabled Adolescents, Brenda G. Miller

Master's Theses

The present study attempted to examine the relationship between reading level and central and incidental learning in the visual and auditory modalities. The central-incidental tasks were modifications of Hagen's (1967) visual central-incidental tasks. Twenty male and female adolescents who had identified learning problems were subjects. An equal number of good and poor readers were assigned to the visual and auditory tasks. The results of the research indicated that reading level was not related to incidental learning nor to central auditory performance. However, the research findings showed significant differences between reading level and visual central task performance. The simplicity of the …

Effectiveness Of Professionals Vs. Paraprofessionals In The Group Management Of Test Anxiety, Matthew P. Bars

Theses and Dissertations

This research was concerned with the relative effectiveness of professional and paraprofessional therapists in group management of college students exhibiting test anxiety. It was predicted that both the professional and paraprofessional therapists' groups would exhibit significant pre-post decreases in debilitating test anxiety. It was also predicted that there would be no significant pre-post differences between the professional and paraprofessional therapists' groups. Subjects were 26 participants in five Illinois State University Student Counseling Center Test Anxiety Workshops. Subjects completed a modified State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Achievement Anxiety Test at the beginning and end of the test anxiety workshops.

The hypothesis that …
