In the first portion of this two-part dissertation, I attempted to replicate the findings published in Toaddy (2012), illustrating the relationships between External Organizational Justice (EJ) and a collection of organizational outcomes. This study is a program evaluation with a mixed methods design that evaluated the effectiveness of Peer Engagement and Knowledge (PEAK), a six-week community-based group intervention that incorporates mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) to address multiple health behaviors for multiracial youth in Hilo, Hawai‘i. During the past few decades, occupational health researchers have examined the effects of work characteristics on job stress and employee wellbeing (Beehr & Franz, 1987; Caulfield, Chang, Dollard, & Elshaug, 2004; Jex, 1998; Jex & Britt, 2014; Schaufeli & Greenglass, 2001; Sparks, Faragher, & Cooper, 2001). With the help of the Job Demands-Resources model (JD-R model; Bakker & Demerouti, 2007; Bakker, Demerouti, & Schaufeli, 2003; Demerouti, Bakker, de Jonge, Janssen, & Schaufeli, 2001; Schaufeli & Bakker, 2004), researchers have been able to examine the impact of jobspecific work characteristics (demands and resources) on employee wellbeing. The work processes outlined in the JD-R model have demonstrated utility in predicting a variety of health-related outcomes in various occupations and settings, and as a result, the model has received considerable support in the literature (e.g., Bakker & Demerouti, 2007; Schaufeli & Taris, 2014; Xanthopoulou, Bakker, Demerouti, & Schaufeli, 2007). However, it is possible that national culture influences occupational-health theories such as the JD-R model. Research exploring the tenets of the model under the lens of national culture has been limited to a few studies and has relied on generic demands and resources (e.g., Brough et al., 2003; Farndale & Murrer, 2015; Liu, Spector, & Shi, 2007). As such, the present research effort proposed to test the basic tenets of the JD-R model under the lens of national culture. Nationwide out-of-school suspension and expulsion rates show historically underserved groups of students leading discipline disproportionality reports (i.e., 1.1 million African-American, 660,000 in special education, 600,000 Latino, and 210,000 ELL students; U. Sexist microaggressions have been associated with anger, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, job stress, increased risky health behavior and trauma. This analysis examined the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), history of trauma, and a history of involvement in the criminal justice system (CJS) on treatment outcomes related to medication treatment for opioid use disorder. This study employed a secondary analysis of data derived from a multi-state, multi-site treatment center focused on substance abuse and more specifically opioid use disorder treatment. The total sample size was 19,970 patients. The majority of the sample received treatment in Massachusetts, was white, and non-Hispanic. The current study examined potential mediators (i.e., internalization of cultural standards of beauty, engaging in upward and downward appearance comparisons, and receiving positive and negative appearance-related commentary) and moderators (i.e., feminist beliefs) of the links between the use of Instagram and self-objectification and body surveillance among 524 young adult undergraduate women from the Southeast United States. The study examined the moderating role of meaning made, meaning making and social support on the relationship between negative life events and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression as well as the facilitating role of these moderating variables for posttraumatic growth(PTG). Group contingencies are often used in the classroom to decrease disruptive behavior and improve both academic performance and on-task behavior. However, research is mixed regarding the most appropriate target for intervention: academic performance, on-task behavior, or disruptive behavior. The current study was designed to extend research on group contingency target behaviors by evaluating and comparing two interdependent group contingencies: an academic performance contingency and an on-task behavior contingency. A Model Of The Relationship Between Performance Feedback And Goal Setting: A Consideration Of, Affective Cognitive, And Psychological State Effects, Ann-Marie R. Castille

Performance feedback meetings are often dreaded, perceived to be worthless, and de-motivating for employees (Culbertson, Henning, & Payne, 2013; Rock, 2008). Although they are intended to enhance motivation and performance (Erez, 1977; Kim & Hamner, 1976), over a third of feedback interventions backfire, resulting in lower rather than higher performance (Kluger & DeNisi, 1996). Motivational theories (i.e., behavioral motivation theory, organizational justice theory, reversal theory, goal setting theory, and theory of planned behavior) provide complementary explanations for the impact of feedback on performance. However, these explanations have not been subjected to comprehensive empirical scrutiny. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine how feedback characteristics (i.e., valence, accuracy, and information type) influence perceptions of justice, affect, motivation, and performance. Specifically, this research tested a process model suggesting that positive (rather than negative), accurate (rather than inaccurate), and nominal (rather than relative) feedback positively affects recipients’ perceptions of justice, affect, and motivation, resulting in higher goal setting and, subsequently, higher performance. Additionally, this model suggests that the effects of feedback characteristics are stronger for participants in a telic meta-motivational state (rather than paratelic, or playful state). A 2x2x2 factorial experiment was conducted to test this process model. The participants, who were told they would be performing an information-gathering task for a university website, were recruited via Amazon’s

Mechanical Turk. Participants were asked to set a goal for performing this task and also told that they will receive feedback regarding their performance. After their first performance episode, participants were randomly assigned to receive one of six feedback messages (positive or negative; accurate or inaccurate; nominal or relative) and asked to set a new performance goal. Afterward completing a second performance episode, participants were asked to complete a short survey. All hypothesized relationships were tested using structural equation modeling. It was found that feedback valence influences recipients’ positive and negative affect.
