An Interview Study Of Beliefs About Confidentiality And Attitudes Towards Disclosure Of Moral Injury In The Canadian Armed Forces, Cassidy Trahair

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Military members often encounter potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) during their service. These encounters can put them at higher risk for developing moral injury, defined as the psychological distress following morally-transgressive situations. If untreated, this can lead to negative health outcomes like depression, suicide ideation, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the rate of help-seeking among military members experiencing mental health issues is low. Thematic analysis was used to evaluate barriers to mental health help-seeking among individuals with CAF experience, including perceived confidentiality of information, and whether PMIEs impact the decision-making process. The sample consisted of 9 individuals with CAF experience …

Exploring The Role(S) Of Trait Emotional Intelligence & Personality In Help-Seeking Behaviour Among Undergraduate Students, Nikola Cuvalo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Trait emotional intelligence (EI) and the Big Five personality factors represent promising constructs in the individual differences literature that have been investigated in relation to help-seeking behaviour. This quantitative work explores the relationship between individual differences in trait EI, personality, and attitudes toward – as well as future intentions to engage in – help-seeking behaviour among undergraduate students at Western University. Stepwise regression modelling was used to determine which dimensions of personality and trait EI best predicted help-seeking outcomes and whether attitudes toward help-seeking predicted intentions to seek help from university-provided mental health sources. Resultsindicated that several individual facets of …

Adolescents’ Perceptions And Responses To Peer Mental Health Challenges And Problematic Behaviours Following A Social-Emotional Learning Program, Jessica Sommers

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Vulnerable youth may be more susceptible to developing problematic behaviours and mental health challenges, including anxious and depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, substance misuse, and unhealthy relationships. Social-emotional learning programs like The Healthy Relationships Plus Program (HRPP) can foster positive youth development by including training on mental health literacy, developing skills in help-seeking, and providing opportunities to practice difficult conversations. This study explored youth’s responses to hypothetical challenges faced by peers with a group of sixty-three adolescents who had participated in the HRPP. Responses to four distinct scenarios were collected to examine youths’ perceptions of various challenges and problematic behaviours, including …

Research has been done on the importance of addressing mental health concerns while obtaining an undergraduate degree. Prior Help-Seeking And Intuition Of Danger In Domestic Homicide Victims., Kristina Giacobbe Mar 2019

Prior Help-Seeking And Intuition Of Danger In Domestic Homicide Victims., Kristina Giacobbe

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Domestic violence and homicide can be reduced when victims seek effective and timely assistance or friends, family and community professionals offer support. One important factor in help-seeking is a victim’s intuitive sense of fear. Several factors related to this fear were examined including the presence of children in the home, perpetrator’s controlling behaviours, and mental health and/or addiction concerns of victims of DH. A retrospective case analysis was performed using domestic homicide case data reviewed by the Domestic Violence Death Review Committee (DVDRC) in Ontario, Canada. Victims who displayed an intuitive sense of fear were compared to victims who did …

Parental Help-Seeking For Pediatric Insomnia: Where, When, And Why Do Parents Seek Help?, Adam T. Newton

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Pediatric insomnia affects approximately 25% of children and can impact both child and parent functioning. Despite its prevalence and impact, next-to-nothing is known about help-seeking mechanism for pediatric insomnia. These mechanisms are expected to mirror models from the children’s mental health help-seeking literature. Both studies in this thesis gathered data from an online multinational project. Manuscript 1 investigated the informal, informational, and formal sources of help for pediatric insomnia and the factors that motivated parents to seek professional help. Parents utilized or expected to utilize a variety of informal (most commonly their partner, friends, or family members) and informational (most …

Understanding And Promoting Help-Seeking Among Adolescents, Tessa Alexander

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Social emotional skills have been associated with fostering positive youth development. This research considered the association between a social emotional learning program, entitled The Healthy Relationships Plus Program (HRPP), and behavioural intentions to seek help; an integral component of positive youth development. Self-report surveys prior to and after program implementation were collected from participants and focus groups were conducted to explore youth intentions to seek help. Results from this analysis demonstrated that youth intentions to seek help were influenced by fear of stigmatization. Furthermore, the HRPP demonstrated through repeated measures ANOVA analyses that an association between program participation and knowledge …

Teachers’ Help-Seeking Perceptions And Workplace Psychological Safety, Sheila M. Linseman

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This objective of this study was to investigate teacher mental health, attitudes toward psychological help-seeking, and perceptions of psychological safety within schools. Findings from this study of 600 Canadian educational professionals revealed a higher frequency and severity of distress than in the general population, warranting intervention. Attitudes toward psychological help-seeking were generally positive, though less favorable than comparable published studies. Overall, participants rated their workplaces as “somewhat” psychologically safe. However, there were low ratings of work-life balance and respectful treatment of mental illness by leadership. Implications and recommendations of these findings were discussed.

Why Wait? The Effects Of Waiting Time On Subsequent Help-Seeking Among Families Looking For Children’S Mental Health Services, Kyleigh E. Schraeder

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The influence of wait-list duration for child and adolescent mental health services on families seeking help elsewhere was examined. Survival analyses, modelling time from being initially placed on a wait-list to when a family contacted a new agency, were conducted separately for families that did not receive help prior to contacting a new agency (n=159) and those that received help (n=114). Survival analyses examined effects of wait-time along with predisposing (e.g.,age), need (e.g.,child psychopathology), and enabling (e.g.,number of agencies) factors on time to contact a new agency. Almost half of families contacted a new agency after having been wait-listed. Of …
