Improving Establishment Of Seeded Buffalograss, Luqi Li
Improving Establishment Of Seeded Buffalograss, Luqi Li
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Buffalograss [Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm.] is a warm-season grass native to the North American Great Plains. Buffalograss is drought resistant, heat resistant and cold tolerant, and thus is well-adapted to many uses in areas that require low maintenance or erosion control. Since buffalograss is slow-growing, one challenge of establishing seeded buffalograss is to maximize seedling maturation and establishment before winter. We evaluated dormant seeding buffalograss in late fall and winter, when germination is not expected until soils warm in spring. We successfully dormant seeded ‘Sundancer’, ‘Bowie’ or ‘Cody’ buffalograss at 146 kg ha-1 from late November though …
Investigations Of Ethylene And Ethylene Inhibition, Ball Lie, And Synthetic Turf Color, William Daniel Strunk
Investigations Of Ethylene And Ethylene Inhibition, Ball Lie, And Synthetic Turf Color, William Daniel Strunk
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of several studies over three unrelated areas of focus. Chapters two and three investigate the role of the hormone ethylene on growth of creeping bentgrass through (1) exposure of turf to exogenous ethylene and (2) testing an ethylene inhibiting compound for use to alleviate stress related injury. Previous research demonstrated a correlation of stress injury and ethylene and lessening of injury through ethylene inhibition, but little work has been conducted evaluating the direct effects of ethylene. These studies failed to confirm findings in previous research. Chapters four and five aim to illustrate the impact of turfgrass …
Efficient Irrigation For Recreational Turfgrass In New England: Evapotranspiration And Crop Coefficients, James W. Poro
Efficient Irrigation For Recreational Turfgrass In New England: Evapotranspiration And Crop Coefficients, James W. Poro
Masters Theses
As water demand increases it will become more imperative for golf course superintendents, landscape managers, and other industry professionals to improve water use efficiency in the management of recreational turfgrass. Scheduling irrigation according to actual turfgrass evapotranspiration rates (ETT) is an integral component of efficient irrigation practices. Impracticality of field derived ETT for industry use, however, directs the need of weather station derived reference (predicted) evapotranspiration (ET0). To accurately predict (estimate) ETT of turf and other crops, scientifically derived landscape (crop) coefficients (Kc values) are used in conjunction with mathematical models that incorporate …
Evaluation Of Colorants On ‘Sharpshooter’ And ‘Cody’ Buffalograss, R. Braun, J. Fry, M. Kennelly, D. Bremer, J. Griffin
Evaluation Of Colorants On ‘Sharpshooter’ And ‘Cody’ Buffalograss, R. Braun, J. Fry, M. Kennelly, D. Bremer, J. Griffin
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
Turf colorants effectively enhanced green color of dormant buffalograss. Using a higher application rate or adding a midwinter application helped longevity of color. Colorants increased canopy temperatures more consistently than soil temperatures, which may encourage earlier spring greenup.

Evaluation Of New Zoysiagrass Experimental Lines For Winter Hardiness And Turf Quality In The Transition Zone, R. Braun, J. Fry, M. Kennelly
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
A total of 881 zoysiagrass progeny originating from parental crosses at Texas A&M AgriLife Research – Dallas were planted in 2012, and an additional 104 progeny were planted by Kansas State University researchers in 2013. Starting in 2013, grasses were rated visually on 10 occasions through 2014. These ratings occurred throughout the year to evaluate winter survival and six turf quality characteristics to identify those progeny best adapted to the Kansas site. In September 2014, the top 20 of the original 985 progeny were selected and returned to Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Dallas, Texas, for propagation.

2012 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program Tall Fescue Test: 2012 And 2013 Data, L. Parsons, M. Kennelly, J. Griffin, J. Hoyle
Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports
Tall fescue is the cool-season turfgrass best adapted for the transition zone because it tolerates drought and heat and has few serious insect or disease problems. It possesses a rather coarse leaf texture, lacks stolons, and has only very short rhizomes. Efforts to improve cultivar quality include selecting for finer leaf texture, rich green color, and better sward density while maintaining good stress tolerance and disease resistance. New introductions need regular evaluation to determine their long-range suitability for use in Kansas.
