Maize Hybrid Response To Tillage Under Irrigated And Dryland Conditions, Wallace Wilhelm, Mark Reed Hinze, C. O. Gardner Nov 1991

Maize Hybrid Response To Tillage Under Irrigated And Dryland Conditions, Wallace Wilhelm, Mark Reed Hinze, C. O. Gardner

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The popularity of reduced-tillage cropping systems has emphasized the need to determine if maize (Zea mays L.) developed under conventional tillage systems (moldboard plow, disk, and harrow) is readily adaptable to conservation production systems (greater than 30% residue cover after planting). Past research has indicated that crops grown under conservation production systems are subjected to cooler and wetter soil conditions than crops grown with conventional tillage practices. Information is needed to determine if a significant interaction exists between tillage and hybrid in maize. Field experiments were conducted in 1982 and 1983 near Lincoln, Nebraska, U.S.A., on an Abruptic Argiaquoll and …

Describing And Quantifying Growth Stages Of Perennial Forage Grasses, K. J. Moore, Lowell E. Moser, Kenneth P. Vogel, Steven S. Waller, B. E. Johnson, Jeffrey F. Pedersen Nov 1991

Describing And Quantifying Growth Stages Of Perennial Forage Grasses, K. J. Moore, Lowell E. Moser, Kenneth P. Vogel, Steven S. Waller, B. E. Johnson, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A system for identifying and quantifying the stages of growth and development of perennial forage grasses was developed. The system consists of a universal set of morphological descriptors for forage and range grasses and a continuous numerical index. The life cycle of individual grass tillers is divided into five primary growth stages (i) germination, (ii) vegetative, (iii) elongation, (iv) reproductive, and (v) seed ripening. Substages corresponding to specific morphological events are defined within each primary stage. Each growth stage consists of a primary and secondary stage and has both a mnemonic code and numerical index associated with it. The codes …

Physiological Basis For Differential Sensitivities Of Plant Species To Protoporphyrinogen Oxidase-Inhibiting Herbicides, Timothy D. Sherman, José M. Becerril, Hiroshi Matsumoto, Mary V. Duke, Judy M. Jacobs, Nicholas J. Jacobs, Stephen O. Duke Sep 1991

Physiological Basis For Differential Sensitivities Of Plant Species To Protoporphyrinogen Oxidase-Inhibiting Herbicides, Timothy D. Sherman, José M. Becerril, Hiroshi Matsumoto, Mary V. Duke, Judy M. Jacobs, Nicholas J. Jacobs, Stephen O. Duke

Dartmouth Scholarship

With a leaf disc assay, 11 species were tested for effects of the herbicide acifluorfen on porphyrin accumulation in darkness and subsequent electrolyte leakage and photobleaching of chlorophyll after exposure to light. Protoporphyrin IX (Proto IX) was the only porphyrin that was substantially increased by the herbicide in any of the species. However, there was a wide range in the amount of Proto IX accumulation caused by 0.1 millimolar acifluorfen between species. Within species, there was a reduced effect of the herbicide in older tissues. Therefore, direct quantitative comparisons between species are difficult. Nevertheless, when data from different species and …

Revegetation Guide To The Central Wheatbelt, E C. Lefroy, R J. Hobbs, L J. Atkins, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia, Csiro, Division Of Wildlife And Ecology

Bulletins 4000 -

The rapid development of the central wheatbelt for agriculture over the past century has produced a productive farming landscape, but one which is increasingly subject to degradation. Erosion, salinization, declining soil structure, waterlogging and acidification are all symptoms of this degradation and causes of lost agricultural production. In addition, most of the native vegetation and many of the native animals have disappeared, and the natural heritage of the area resides in small scattered patches that together make up only seven per cent of the wheatbelt region.

Many farmers now recognize that replanting trees and shrubs is an effective means of …

Review Of The Wild Oat Inflorescence And Seed: Anatomy, Development And Morphology, M. V. S. Raju, David M. Sutherland Aug 1991

Review Of The Wild Oat Inflorescence And Seed: Anatomy, Development And Morphology, M. V. S. Raju, David M. Sutherland

Biology Faculty Publications

This slim volume describes a detailed study of the reproductive parts of Avena fatua, the wild oat plant-a common weed in the northern plains and the probable ancestor of the cultivated oat. The book integrates the author's own work with information from available literature and includes lengthy technical descriptions of the structure and the growth of the inflorescence, the floret, the ovule, the pollen grain, the embryo, the seed, and the young seedling. Throughout the work, the author relates the wild oat's structure and development to other grasses, other monocotyledons, and other seed plants, offering evolutionary interpretations of many of …
