Forest Soil Characteristics As Influenced By Vegetation And Bedrock In The Spruce-Fir Zone Of The Great Smoky Mountains, James Alvis Wolfe

Doctoral Dissertations

The present study sought to determine differences in soil characteristics related to spruce-fir and beech-birch vegetation in the Great Smoky Mountains when other factors were held as nearly constant as possible. An attempt was made to evaluate the influence of bedrock on soil characteristics and vegetation patterns. Hopefully this investigation may contribute to a greater understanding of the perplexing vegetation mosaic found at higher mountain elevations.

The Great Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina constitute the portion of the Unaka Range situated between the Little Tennessee and Pigeon Rivers. Although metamorphosed, the rocks of Unakas, the westernmost …

Investigation Of Nitrogen Fixation By Three Species Of Lichen, Dortha Maloy Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

One species of lichen from each of three different families (Collema wyomingensis , Caloplaca elegans (Link)T. Fries, and Parmelia molliuscula Ach.) was studied to determine whether or not these lichens can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Samples of these three lichens were collected in the early spring of 1967. Samples of each species were placed in 20-ml glass tubes which contained 5 ml of glass wool saturated with 0.5 M nitrogen-free Hoaglands nutrient solution. These tubes were sealed by heat onto a gas manifold system and evacuated. An N15- enriched atmosphere (22 atoms % N15) was introduced into the tubes from the …

For each species the following information was also given; the distribution in North America, the elvational range, period of flowering, and the location on the Beaver Dam Mountains in which …

A Study Of Factors Affecting The Germination Of Alfalfa And Safflower Pollen, Ling Lin May 1967

A Study Of Factors Affecting The Germination Of Alfalfa And Safflower Pollen, Ling Lin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Pollen grains serve a very important role in the life cycle of flowering plants, in that they are involved in the transmission of inherited characteristics from generation to generation. Because of their small size the study of pollen grains has been necessarily associated with the development of the microscope. Not until the middle of the seventeenth century, when Hooke gave the world the compound microscope, was an instrument available with sufficient power to adequately reveal the shapes of pollen grains. However, two of Hooke's contemporaries, Malpighi and Grew, who used a simple microscope, are generally recognized as the co-founders of …

Forage Yield And Chemical Composition Of An Orchardgrass-Bromegrass Pasture Mixture As Influenced By Clipping Frequency, Nitrogen Fertilization And Irrigation Regime, Vinayak G. Gawai

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The influence of agronomic practices on forage production and chemical composition of an orchardgrass-bromegrass pasture mixture was studied at the Greenville Farm, Logan, Utah, during 1960-1964. The soil is a well drained Millville Silt loam that has about a one percent slope and occurs on an alluvial fan. It is high in potash, phosphorus and calcium and is alkaline having a pH of 7.9 to 8.2.

Analysis of the clipping frequency showed that the yield of forage from four harvests was greater than from five harvests. This difference was greater on plots receiving high rates of nitrogen fertilization, and frequent …

A Study Of Cotyledonal Cracking In Snap Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), John L. Morris May 1967

A Study Of Cotyledonal Cracking In Snap Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), John L. Morris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Certain varieties of snap bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., seeds are very susceptible to cracks that develop naturally across the cotyledons during pre-harvest, storage, or germination. This phenomenon is commonly known as cotyledonal cracking and may cause serious yield reductions on plants developing from affected seeds.

Cotyledonal cracking susceptibility of six white and six colored seeded varieties of snap beans were compared. Considerable differences were found in cracking susceptibility, but there was little or no relationship between seed coat color and cracking susceptibility.

An experiment was conducted to determine if a metabolic stress of the plant during the time of pod …

Digestibility Studies With Western Wheat Grass, Marvin John Wurster Jan 1967

Digestibility Studies With Western Wheat Grass, Marvin John Wurster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to make the most economical usage of our range forages it is essential that we know when the forage is most digestible in order for livestock to obtain maximum benefit from it. For many years cutting date has been the most common measure used to determine when a forage contains the most nutritive value. In many grasses emergence of the seed head or seed maturity has been used to determine when a particular forage should be harvested, However, western wheatgrass (Agropyron mithill) is not dependent on seed for reproduction and under range conditions often does not produce a …
