Racial Disparities Study In Diabetes-Related Complication Using National Health Survey Data, Fengxia Yan

The main aim of this study is to compare the prevalence of diabetes-related complications in white to the prevalence in other racial and ethnic groups in United States using 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). By constructing the logistic regression model, odds ratios (OR) were calculated to compare the prevalence of diabetes complications in white and other groups. Compared to white, the prevalence of hypertension and stroke in African Americans were higher, while the prevalence of heart attack and coronary heart disease were lower. Among the alternative DNA confrormations, G-quadruplexes has certainly garnered much recognition due to increase in evidences supporting their involvement in diverse biological process. Photoionization cross section calculations are performed for the ground ([Ne]3s23p63d 2D ) and the first two excited ([Ne]3s23p63d 2D and [Ne]3s23p64s 2S ) states of potassium-like transition metal ions (Sc+2, Ti+3, V+4, Cr+5, Mn+6, Fe+7), along with photoionization calculations for K-like Ca+ ions in the ground ([Ne]3s23p64s 2S ) state and the first two excited ([Ne]3s23p63d 2D and [Ne]3s23p63d 2D ) states. The discrete N-electron final state ion system orbitals are generated using the computer program AUTOSTRUCTURE; 24 configurations are included in the configuration-interaction (CI) calculation for transition metal ions, and 30 configurations for the case of Ca+ ions. The number of septic systems grew to over 85,000 with a density of 487 septic systems per square mile. This study mapped the distribution of septic systems to determine regions of potential pathogen surface water. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are some of the most extreme objects in the universe. They output copious amounts of energy spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum. There are many different subclasses of AGN depending on your viewing angle. Blazars, viewing down the relativistic jet, are the most variable class of AGN known. They exhibit extreme variability in all wavelengths on timescales as short as minutes. In this thesis, we apply smoothed empirical likelihood method to investigate confidence intervals for the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve with right censoring. As a particular application of comparison of distributions from two populations, the ROC curve is constructed by the combination of cumulative distribution function and quantile function. Under mild conditions, the smoothed empirical likelihood ratio converges to chi-square distribution, which is the well-known Wilks's theorem. Furthermore, the performances of the empirical likelihood method are also illustrated by simulation studies in terms of coverage probability and average length of confidence intervals. Optical absorption spectroscopy has been applied to study properties such as the fundamental absorption edge and defect absorption centers of group III-nitride compound semiconductor epilayers. The investigation in this thesis focused on analyzing the band gap of indium-rich In1-xGaxN epilayers, which where grown by the high-pressure chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) technique. Our results - together with literature data for gallium-rich In1-xGaxN alloys indicate that the shift of the fundamental band gap of In1-xGaxN with composition x can be described with a bowing parameter of b = 2.2eV. This paper investigates the determinants of excess returns using dividend yields as a proxy in a cross-sectional setting. First, we find that types of industry and the current business cycle are determining factors of returns. Second, our results suggest that dividend yield serves a signaling mechanism indicating “healthiness” of a firm among prospective investors. Third we see that there is a positive relationship between dividend yield and risk, especially in the utility and financial sectors. And finally, using actual excess returns, instead of dividend yield in our model shows that all predictors of dividend yield were also significant predictors of …

Novel and potent ligands to the serotonin7 (5-HT7) receptor have been synthesized. The synthesized compounds include a set of substituted pyrimidines which show high affinity to the 5-HT7 receptor, synthesized by previously described methods [1,2] in high yield. Comparing the affinities of substituted pyrimidines to previously calculated models [3,4] yielded new hypotheses about the nature of interaction between the pyrimidine ligands and the 5-HT7 binding site. Understanding how natural Cs, Rb, and K have been redistributed in Savannah River Site (SRS) soils during pedogenesis is important to understanding how radiocesium released to the soils will behave over the long term. In this article, the authors describe the cyclical process of a collaborative evaluative inquiry project and the data collected throughout the project—data that not only informed "next steps" during the project but also show promise in documenting the benefits of such projects. Over a period of 18 months, seven elementary teachers from a K–6 urban elementary school collaborated with university personnel using Parsons’s (2002) Evaluative Inquiry Model, a 5-stage, cyclical model that includes defining, planning, and investigating challenges; collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing data; and communicating findings that transpire through collaborative inquiry. On the bead modeling methodology, or BMM, a macromolecule is modeled as a rigid, non-overlapping bead array with arbitrary radii. The BMM approach was pioneered by Kirkwood and coworkers (Kirkwood, J.G., Macromolecules, E.P. Auer (Ed.), Gordon and Breach, New York, 1967; Kirkwood, J.G., Riseman, J., J. Chem. Phys., 1948, 16, 565) and applied to such transport properties as diffusion, sedimentation, and viscosity. The Pozzolane Rosse ignimbrite [PR] (457±4 ka) in the Alban Hills Volcanic District, Rome, Italy was exposed ~ 40 ka prior to a subsequent volcanic event which coverd it entirely. XRF, XRD, and clay separation results from PR samples from INGV and CA1 boreholes and Castel di Leva quarry show evidence of paleopedogenesis. All locations display loss of base cations, loss of K is consistent with XRD datat showing dissolution or alteration of leucite to analcime. Accumulation of Al and high L.O.I. support XRD evidence of 1:1 clay species at upper depth. Data suggest alteration extent can be determined by …

This thesis explores aspects of map censorship in Google China through a theoretical framework based on Foucault’s power/knowledge. Comparing results of content analysis of maps in Google Ditu in Google China and Google Maps in Google Dot Com, the thesis analyzes the degree of censorship of maps in the Google geoweb. My findings are a higher density of labeling in Google Ditu in comparison with Google Maps, the absence of VGI in Google Ditu, the limitation of zoom level at Google Ditu, and the absence of Street View in China. Knowing the actual effective wavelength of light observed is very important because that value is necessary for determining astrophysical parameters of stars. A generalization of the classic well-known theory of primary decomposition, weak primary decomposition is a consequence of the notions of weakly associated prime ideals and nearly nilpotent elements, which were introduced by N. Bourbaki. We begin by discussing basic facts about classic primary decomposition. Then we prove the results on weak primary decomposition, which are parallel to the classic case. The Optical And Radio Properties Of A Low-Redshift Sample Of Broad-Lined Active Galactic Nuclei, Stephen E. Rafter

The question as to whether the distribution of radio loudness in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is actually bimodal has been discussed extensively in the literature. Furthermore, there have been claims that radio loudness depends on black hole mass and Eddington ratio. We investigate these claims using the low redshift broad line AGN sample of Greene & Ho 2007, which consists of 8434 objects at z < 0.35 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Fourth Data Release. We obtained radio fluxes from the Very Large Array Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey for the SDSS AGN. Out of the 8434 SDSS AGN, 846 have radio emission within 4" of the optical counterpart and are considered to be core emission. We also perform a systematic search for extended emission in FIRST that can be positively associated with the optical counterparts and find 51 out of the 846 previously detected core sources have extended emission that must be taken into account when calculating the total radio luminosity. Further, we find an additional 12 objects that have extended radio emission but no detectable radio core and have classic FR II type morphologies. Using these data, the question of radio bimodality and the dependence of radio-loudness on physical parameters are investigated for different subsets of the total sample. We find modest trends in the radio-loud fraction as a function of black hole mass and Eddington ratio, where the fraction of RL AGN increases for the largest black hole mass group and decreases with increasing Eddington ratio. With extended emission taken into account, we find strong evidence for a bimodal distribution in radio-loudness, where the lower radio luminosity core-only sources appear as a population separate from the extended sources with a dividing line at log(R) = 1.75. This dividing line is interesting in that it requires the radio luminosity to be 50 times the optical luminosity, ensuring that these are indeed the most RL AGN, which may have different or extreme physical conditions in their central engines when compared to the more numerous radio quiet AGN in this sample.
