A novel methodology for analysis of damage in contact problems in presented. Two important categories of contact damage are studied, namely crack nucleation and adhesive wear. The proposed methodology is primarily based on the laws of energy and thermodynamics, and as such offers great advantages by unifying the analysis of damage in a variety of contact configurations. Crack nucleation is the first damage type analyzed. For this purpose, the line-contact fretting configuration is chosen. Surface texturing is a method that modifies the frictional surface of a nominally flat tribocomponent by shallow patterns. It is found that with added patterns to the surface of a mechanical face seal or thrust bearing, their tribological performance improves, i.e. both friction and wear rate decrease. The current research concentrates on the analysis of hydrodynamic effect responsible for the performance enhancement of the spiral groove patterns and dimples on mechanical seal-like structures and the experimental evaluation of the tribological behavior of these structures. This research deals with an experimental and numerical investigation of the frictional and thermal behavior of pin-bushing pairs, operating at reciprocating sliding motion or under heavy loads. Large interfacial temperatures developed due to frictional heating can cause failure. Therefore, numerical prediction and analysis of the surface temperature under various operating conditions are important. Laboratory tests using a pin-bushing tester provided measurements of the friction coefficient and temperature. Hard coated and plain (uncoated) bushings, both made of induction hardened stainless steel, were tested. Lower coefficient of friction and surface temperature were observed in the case of the coated bushing. In the …
