On The Application Of Mechanical Vibration In Robotics-Assisted Soft Tissue Intervention, Iman Khalaji Dec 2014

On The Application Of Mechanical Vibration In Robotics-Assisted Soft Tissue Intervention, Iman Khalaji

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Mechanical vibration as a way of transmitting energy has been an interesting subject to study. While cyclic oscillation is usually associated with fatigue effect, and hence a detrimental factor in failure of structures and machineries, by controlled transmission of vibration, energy can be transferred from the source to the target. In this thesis, the application of such mechanical vibration in a few surgical procedures is demonstrated.

Three challenges associated with lung cancer diagnosis and treatment are chosen for this purpose, namely, Motion Compensation, tumor targeting in lung Needle Insertion and Soft Tissue Dissection:

  1. A robotic solution is proposed …

Were Neandertal Humeri Adapted For Spear Thrusting Or Throwing? A Finite Element Study, Michael Anthony Berthaume Nov 2014

Were Neandertal Humeri Adapted For Spear Thrusting Or Throwing? A Finite Element Study, Michael Anthony Berthaume

Masters Theses

An ongoing debate concerning Neandertal ecology is whether or not they utilized long range weaponry. The anteroposteriorly expanded cross-section of Neandertal humeri have led some to argue they thrusted their weapons, while the rounder cross-section of Late Upper Paleolithic modern human humeri suggests they threw their weapons. We test the hypothesis that Neandertal humeri were built to resist strains engendered by thrusting rather than throwing using finite element models of one Neandertal, one Early Upper Paleolithic (EUP) human and three recent human humeri, representing a range of cross-sectional shapes and sizes. Electromyography and kinematic data and articulated skeletons were used …

A Study Of Shock Analysis Using The Finite Element Method Verified With Euler-Bernoulli Beam Theory; Mechanical Effects Due To Pulse Width Variation Of Shock Inputs; And Evaluation Of Shock Response Of A Mixed Flow Fan

David Jonathan González Campos

For many engineers that use finite element analysis or FEA, it is very important to know how to properly model and obtain accurate solutions for complicated loading conditions such as shock loading. Transient acceleration loads, such as shocks, are not as common as static loads. Analyzing these types of problems is less understood, which is the basis for this study. FEA …

Effects Of Local Ph On The Formation And Regulation Of Cristae Morphologies, Dong Hoon Song, Jonghyun Park, Martin A. Philbert, Ann Marie Sastry, Wei Lu Aug 2014

Effects Of Local Ph On The Formation And Regulation Of Cristae Morphologies, Dong Hoon Song, Jonghyun Park, Martin A. Philbert, Ann Marie Sastry, Wei Lu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cristae, folded subcompartments of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), have complex and dynamic morphologies. Since cristae are the major site of adenosine triphosphate synthesis, morphological changes of cristae have been studied in relation to functional states of mitochondria. In this sense, investigating the functional and structural significance of cristae may be critical for understanding progressive mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the detailed mechanisms of the formation and regulation of these cristae structures have not been fully elucidated. Among the hypotheses concerning the regulation of cristae morphologies, we exclusively investigate the effects of the local pH gradient on the cristae morphologies by using …

Finite Element Beam Model For Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Akhilesh Surabhi Aug 2014

Finite Element Beam Model For Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting Using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory, Akhilesh Surabhi

All Theses

Piezoelectric energy harvesting devices convert mechanical energy to usable electrical energy, which can be used to power other electronic devices and sensors. Typical piezoelectric harvesters are unimorph cantilever composite beams, which have a single active piezoceramic layer and a passive substrate or a bimorph that has a passive substrate sandwiched between two piezoceramic layers. Power is captured across a coupled load resistor circuit in either a series or parallel connection. The mathematical modeling approaches for piezoelectric beam harvesters present in literature range from analytical distributed parameter modeling, to approximate distributed parameter, Rayleigh- Ritz global discretization or finite element local discretization. …

Analytical And Experimental Analysis Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Sarah Trabia Aug 2014

Analytical And Experimental Analysis Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Sarah Trabia

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many engineering applications ranging from robotic joints to shock and vibration mitigation can benefit by incorporating components with variable stiffness. In addition, variable stiffness structures can provide haptic feedback (the sense of touch) to the user. In this work, it is proposed to study Magnetorheological Elastomers (MRE), where iron particles within the elastomer compound develop a dipole interaction energy, to be used in a device for haptic feedback. A novel feature of this MRE device is to introduce a field-induced variable shear modulus bias via a permanent magnet and using a current input to the electromagnetic control coil to change …

Computational Optimization Methods For Modeling The Effect Of Muscle Forces On Bone Strength Adaptation, Catherine Siena Florio Jan 2014

Computational Optimization Methods For Modeling The Effect Of Muscle Forces On Bone Strength Adaptation, Catherine Siena Florio

Dissertations

An improved understanding of the mechanical influences that alter the strength of a bone can aid in the refinement of the wide array of currently available techniques to counteract the losses of bone strength that occur due to age or disuse both on Earth and in Space. To address this need, computational modeling methods to quantitatively analyze and compare the effects of mechanical factors on the strength of a targeted bone within a multibone, multimuscle system are developed and implemented in this work. Through a more detailed representation of the system in which the bone acts and the creation of …

Stress And Strain Adaptation In Load-Dependent Remodeling Of The Embryonic Left Ventricle, Christine Buffinton Jan 2014

Stress And Strain Adaptation In Load-Dependent Remodeling Of The Embryonic Left Ventricle, Christine Buffinton

Christine M Buffinton

Altered pressure in the developing left ventricle (LV) results in altered morphology and tissue material properties. Mechanical stress and strain may play a role in the regulating process. This study showed that confocal microscopy, three-dimensional reconstruction, and finite element analysis can provide a detailed model of stress and strain in the trabeculated embryonic heart. The method was used to test the hypothesis that end-diastolic strains are normalized after altered loading of the LV during the stages of trabecular compaction and chamber formation. Stage-29 chick LVs subjected to pressure overload and underload at stage 21 were reconstructed with full trabecular morphology …

Modeling Repair Patches Of Ship Hull And Studying The Effect Of Their Orientation On Stresses, Halima Enwegy Jan 2014

Modeling Repair Patches Of Ship Hull And Studying The Effect Of Their Orientation On Stresses, Halima Enwegy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The hull is the most important structural part of any maritime vessel. It must be adequately designed to withstand the harsh sailing environmental conditions and associated forces. In the past, the basic material used to manufacture the ship hull was wood, where the hull was usually shaped as cylindrical wooden shanks. In the present, hull designs have developed to steel columns or stiffened panels that are made of different types of materials. Panels that are stiffened orthogonally in two or more directions and have nine independent material constants are defined as orthotropic panels, and they achieve high specific strength. This …

Effect Of Multi-Tube Injector Geometry On Flame Stability And Nox Emission In A High Pressure Gas Turbine Combustor, Sudipa Sarker Jan 2014

Effect Of Multi-Tube Injector Geometry On Flame Stability And Nox Emission In A High Pressure Gas Turbine Combustor, Sudipa Sarker

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Future generation gas turbine combustors for power production are expected to have the capability of operating on high hydrogen content fuels. To ensure the implementation of high hydrogen content (HHC) fuel in a power generation unit without negotiating with operational or emission advantages, the study of the flame stability regime and behavior of (HHC) fuel under gas turbine condition leads to the necessity of the development of an optically accessible high-pressure combustor. This Dissertation first presents the design of an optically high-pressure combustor facility based on 500 kW power and 1.5 MPa pressure which is the representative pressure of a …
