A mathematical model is developed and utilized to analyze turbomachine cascade flutter and forced response. The flutter boundary, defined as the largest value of reduced frequency at which flutter occurs for a given cascade, was evaluated for single degree of freedom torsional oscillation as well as coupled bending and torsional oscillations. The maximum amplitude of forced response in bending and torsion was also considered. The unsteady aerodynamic lift and moment coefficients were determined from unsteady aerodynamic flow models for subsonic flow, supersonic flow with a subsonic axial component and supersonic axial flow. An active vibration control device for controlling vibration in a cantilevered member and a method for the same are disclosed. The device is comprised of a cantilevered member having a longitudinal axis comprising a sensor mounted near the free end of the member to measure motion of the member in a transverse direction and to produce a corresponding signal. A force generating assembly is mounted to the member near the free end to oppose the measured motion with a force thereby minimizing subsequent motion along the transverse axis caused by vibration.

A twodimensional oscillating flow analysis was conducted simulating the gas flow inside Stirling engine heat exchangers. Both laminar and turbulent oscillating pipe flow were investigated numerically for Re_{max} = 1,920 (Va = 80), 10,800 (Va = 272), 19,300 (Va = 272), and 60,800 (Va = 126). The results are here compared with experimental results of previous investigators. Predictions of the flow regime on present oscillating flow conditions are also checked by comparing velocity amplitudes and phase difference with those from laminar theory and quasisteady profile. The project was designed to measure a reciprocating engine fluid flow (blowby gases past the piston rings) using a laser doppler velocimeter (LDV). Blowby gases were obtained by introducing compressed air into an engine cylinder (piston held at TDC) to simulate engine combustion pressures. Beginning the proposed research included starting an LDV/reciprocating engine laboratory at Western Michigan University and determining the limits of the measurement devices (LDV system in particular).

Flow past the opening of a deep cavity can excite and sustain longitudinal acoustic modes resulting in large pressure fluctuations and loud tone generation. An analytic model of the interaction of the free stream with the acoustic flow field using concentrated vortices in the shear layer is proposed. The model includes a computation of the power transferred by the traveling vortices to the acoustic oscillation in the cavity. A Multiloop spatial system of rotations is used to represent a shaft coupling, allowing a transmission plane which may deviate from the plane of symmetry to be specified. The plane of transmission, for intersecting input and output shaft axes, is the locus of intersections of screw axes that compose the system. Worcester Polytechnic Institute's first payload of spaceflight experiments flew aboard Columbia, STS40, during June of 1991 and culminated eight years of work by students and faculty. The Get Away Special (GAS) payload was installed on the GAS bridge assembly at the aft end of the cargo bay behind the Spacelab Life Sciences (SLSl) laboratory. The experiments were turned on by astronaut signal after reaching orbit and then functioned for 72 hours. Environmental and experimental measurements were recorded on three cassette tapes which, together with zeolite crystals grown on orbit, formed the basis of subsequent analyses.

Artificial neural networks with such characteristics as learning, graceful degradation, and speed inherent to parallel distributed architectures might provide a flexible and cost solution to the real time control of robotics systems. In this investigation artificial neural networks are presented for the coordinate transformation mapping of a twoaxis robot modeled with Fischertechnik physical modeling components. The results indicate that artificial neural systems could be utilized for practical situations and that extended research in these neural structures could provide adaptive architectures for dynamic robotics control.

Automatic Recognition Of Tool Wear On A Face Mill Using A Mechanistic Modeling Approach, Daniel Waldorf, Shiv G. Kapoor, Richard E. Devor

A strategy is developed for identifying cutting tool wear on a face mill by automatically recognizing wear patterns in the cutting force signal. The strategy uses a mechanistic model development to predict forces on a lathe under conditions of wear and extends that model to account for the multiple inserts of a face mill. The extended wear model is then verified through experimentation over the life of the inserts. The predicted force signals are employed to train linear discriminant functions to identify the wear state of the process in a manner suitable for online application.

The authors wish to acknowledge support of this work by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences of the U. S. Department of Energy. An interface damage function (IDF), which statistically describes the area fraction of interface damage as a function of up to eight parameters defining crystallite interfaces, was determined for commercial purity copper specimens crept in plane strain tension. The IDF was determined from stereological parameters measured on plane sections cut through damaged specimens. Exact expressions are presented for the deflection of a laser beam passing parallel to and above the surface of a sample heated by a periodically modulated axisymmetric laser beam. The sample may consist of any number of planar films on a thick substrate. The nozzle contours of the Tunnel 16T nozzle were designed in the early 1950's and, for the most part, were calculated by hand. In addition, corrections have been made to the contours through the use of an influence coefficient correction technique in an attempt to remove small flow irregularities. This correction technique is not based on aerodynamic theory, and, as a result the corrected contours are not necessarily aerodynamically correct. The chargetransfer rate coefficient of Mo6+ and argon has been measured at mean ion energies of 8.8 and 1.4 eV using a laserablation ion source and an ion trap. The rate coefficient deduced from these measurements is 1.02(0.10)×1010 cm3 s1 and appears to be independent of the mean ion energy at this energy range. However, the measured value is an order of magnitude smaller than the Langevin rate coefficient.

Control of a ninestage threecomponent distillation column is considered. The control objective is achieved using a neural estimator and a neural controller. The neural estimator is trained to represent the chemical process accurately, and the neural controller is trained to give an input to the chemical process which will yield the desired output. Training of both the neural networks is accomplished using a recursive least squares training algorithm implemented on an Intel iPSC/2 multicomputer (hypercube). Simulated results are presented for a numerical example.

The natural convective heat transfer and air movement in a Trombe wall solar passive system has been studied analytically and numerically. Three Trombe wall channel geometries including the parallel channel with axial inlet and exit, parallel channel with side vents and Trombe wall channel coupled to the room have been considered. A stateoftheart computer code has been developed that incorporates a modified RungeKutta time integration scheme, Upwind numerical techniques, Multigrid acceleration, and Multiblock capabilities (RUMM). A threedimensional thinlayer formulation of the NavierStokes equations is employed. For turbulent flow cases, the BaldwinLomax algebraic turbulence model is used. Two different upwind techniques are available, van Leer's fluxvector splitting and Roe's fluxdifference splitting. Full approximation multigrid plus implicit residual and corrector smoothing were implemented to enhance the rate of convergence. There are many examples of mechanical systems which require rolling contacts between two or more rigid bodies. Rolling contacts engender nonholonomic constraints in an otherwise holonomic system. In this paper, we develop a unified approach to the control of mechanical systems subject to both holonomic and nonholonomic constraints. We first present a state space realization of a constrained system and show that it is not inputstate linearizable. We then discuss the inputoutput linearization and zero dynamics of the system. A turbulentmolecularmixing closure for passive scalar mixing is derived based on the theory of diffusion in layerlike lamellar structures. The closure is formulated in terms of the Fokker Planck (FP) equation (or an equivalent stochastic differential equation), and is to be employed in conjunction with the probability density function (pdf) balance equation appearing in the pdf methods for modeling turbulent reactive flows. This paper is a continuation of Part I — Principles, to which it refers extensively. The virtual system concept and the methodology introduced in Part I are illustrated by means of a numerical example. This is an exergetic and exergoeconomic analysis of the CHP steam plant that was described in Part I without operating values and parameters. Matrix methods developed by Valero et al. (1986) are adapted to the new concept. It is shown that these methods are made simpler and less subjective. Bondgraphtype diagrams for exergetic and economic costs are presented.

A new type of virtual system, named a flow constraint system (FCS), is proposed to facilitate, clarify, and simplify exergy analyses of plant that involve material flow networks. The need for the virtual system is outlined and the concept is demonstrated by applying it to a CHP steam cycle. The FCS concept allows the physical constraints on the exergy interactions associated with flow streams to be taken into account fully. An efficient algorithm is presented for intersecting vectors with swept solids which represent threeaxis numerically controlled (NC) milling tool motions. The intersection calculation proceeds in hierarchical steps through a series of progressively more exact definitions of the shape of the tool swept volume. At each step, results of intermediate calculations are used to determine whether intersection with an exact representation of the solid is possible and, if so, where and how the swept volume model must be refined for the next step. In the undersea operation of a tethered ROV system, the pilot's ability to control precisely the ROV is often limited by disturbance forces generated by drag due to currents that act either directly on the ROV or indirectly on the ROV through the tether.
